Supercontinuum generation and optical damage of sapphire and YAG at high repetition rates

Supercontinuum generation in bulk solid-state material with bursts of femtosecond laser pulses

We report on experimental and numerical investigation of burst-mode supercontinuum generation in sapphire crystal. The experiments were performed using bursts consisting of two 190 fs, 1030 nm pulses with intra-burst repetition rates of 62.5 MHz and 2.5 GHz from an amplified 1 MHz Yb:KGW laser and revealed higher filamentation and supercontinuum generation threshold for the second pulse in the burst, which increases with the increase of intra-burst repetition rate. The experimental results were quantitatively reproduced numerically, using a developed model, which accounted for altered material response due to residual excitations remaining after propagation of the first pulse. The simulation results unveiled that residual free electron plasma and self-trapped excitons contribute to elevated densities of free electron plasma generated by the second pulse in the burst and so stronger plasma defocusing, significantly affecting its nonlinear propagation dynamics. The presented results identify the fundamental and practical issues for supercontinuum generation in solid-state materials using femtosecond pulse bursts with very high intra-burst repetition rates, which may also apply to the case of single pulses at very high repetition rate, where residual material excitations become relevant and should be accounted for.

Enhanced nonlinear effects in femtosecond laser-inscribed depressed cladding waveguides in sapphire crystals

High-performance depressed cladding waveguides can be fabricated in crystals using ultrafast laser inscription. The investigation of nonlinear phenomena, which manifest during the transmission of high peak power femtosecond pulses within waveguides, holds significant importance for their practical integration into waveguide lasers and waveguide-based components, among other pioneering applications. In this study, the depressed cladding waveguides were successfully prepared in sapphire crystal by a femtosecond laser. The nonlinear phenomena occurring in this waveguide were investigated. The experimental results show that the nonlinearity in the depressed cladding waveguides is significantly enhanced compared with that of the bulk. This enhancement notably manifests through augmented nonlinear losses (NLs) and the third harmonic (TH) blueshift increase. Meanwhile, we theoretically investigate the influence of nonlinear effects on the TH, such as self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM), and group delay. Our results reveal that the phase mismatch between the TH and the pump pulses is the main reason for the asymmetric broadening and blueshift of the TH spectrum. Our study reveals the unique nonlinear properties of the waveguides and lays the foundation for further relevant studies and applications of such waveguides.

High stability white light generation in water at multi-kilohertz repetition rates

An efficient supercontinuum (SC) generation featuring high spectral intensity across a large bandwidth requires high peak powers of several megawatts from pulsed lasers. Under these conditions and at multi-kilohertz (kHz) repetition rates, the SC generated in most materials is unstable due to thermal effects. In this work, we leverage the superior dispersion properties of water to maximize the spectral width of the SC, while avoiding stability issues due to thermal loading by means of a constant laminar flow of the liquid. This flow is controlled by a differential pressure scheme that allows to precisely adjust the fluid velocity to an optimum value for maximum stability of the SC. This approach is successfully implemented for repetition rates of 50 kHz and 100 kHz and two different pump wavelengths in the visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) spectral region with stability of the SC signal only limited by the driving pulses. The resulting water SC spans more than one octave covering the VIS to NIR range. Compared to established materials, such as yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and sapphire, the spectral bandwidth is increased by 60% and 40% respectively. Our scheme has the potential to be implemented with other liquids such as bromine or carbon disulfide (CS2), which promise even wider broadening and operation up to the mid-infrared.

A versatile high-average-power ultrafast infrared driver tailored for high-harmonic generation and vibrational spectroscopy

We report on an ultrafast infrared optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA), pumped by a 200-W thin-disk Yb-based regenerative amplifier at a repetition rate of 100 kHz. The OPCPA is tunable in the spectral range 1.4-3.9 [Formula: see text]m, generating up to 23 W of < 100-fs signal and 13 W of < 200-fs idler pulses for infrared spectroscopy, with additional spectral filtering capabilities for Raman spectroscopy. The OPCPA can also yield 19 W of 49-fs 1.75-[Formula: see text]m signal or 5 W of 62-fs 2.8-[Formula: see text]m idler pulses with active carrier-to-envelope-phase (CEP) stabilisation for high-harmonic generation (HHG). We illustrate the versatility of the laser design, catering to various experimental requirements for probing ultrafast science.

Sub-8-fs pulses in the visible to near-infrared by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier

This work presents a single-stage optical parametric amplifier (OPA) operating at degeneracy (DOPA) and pumped by the third harmonic of a Yb:KGW laser system. This DOPA exploits the broad amplification bandwidth that occurs with type-I phase-matching in β-barium borate (BBO) when signal and idler overlap in the spectrum. The output pulses span from 590 to 780 nm (1.59-2.10 eV) with 7.75-fs duration after compression. Ultrashort pulses with similar bandwidths in this spectral window complement the existing array of optical parametric amplifiers that cover either the visible or the near-IR spectral regions with sub-10-fs pulses. This source of ultrashort optical pulses will enable the application of sophisticated spectroscopy techniques to the study of electronic coherences and energy migration pathways in biological, chemical, and condensed matter systems.

KGW and YVO4: two excellent nonlinear materials for high repetition rate infrared supercontinuum generation

We present an experimental investigation of supercontinuum generation in potassium gadolinium tungstate (KGW) and yttrium vanadate (YVO₄) crystals pumped with 210 fs, 1030 nm pulses from an amplified Yb:KGW laser operating at 2 MHz repetition rate. We demonstrate that compared to commonly used sapphire and YAG, these materials possess considerably lower supercontinuum generation thresholds, produce remarkable red-shifted spectral broadenings (up to 1700 nm in YVO₄ and up to 1900 nm in KGW) and exhibit less bulk heating due to energy deposition during filamentation process. Moreover, durable damage-free performance was observed without any translation of the sample, suggesting that KGW and YVO₄ are excellent nonlinear materials for high repetition rate supercontinuum generation in the near and short-wave infrared spectral range.

Enhancement of the spectral broadening efficiency for circular polarization states in the high absorption regime for Gaussian and doughnut-shaped beams in fused silica

We experimentally investigate the spectral broadening in fused silica in the multiphoton absorption regime. Under standard conditions of laser irradiation, linear polarization of laser pulses is more advantageous for supercontinuum generation. However, with high non-linear absorption, we observe more efficient spectral broadening for circular polarizations for both Gaussian and doughnut-shaped beams. The multiphoton absorption in fused silica is studied by measuring the total transmission of laser pulses and by the intensity dependence of the self-trapped exciton luminescence observation. The strong polarization dependence of multiphoton transitions fundamentally affects the broadening of the spectrum in solids.

Passively CEP stable sub-2-cycle source in the mid-infrared by adiabatic difference frequency generation

We report on the generation of a passive carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable 1.7-cycle pulse in the mid-infrared by adiabatic difference frequency generation. With sole material-based compression, we achieve a sub-2-cycle 16-fs pulse at a center wavelength of 2.7 µm and measured a CEP stability of <190 mrad root mean square. The CEP stabilization performance of an adiabatic downconversion process is characterized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge.

Parametric waveform synthesis: a scalable approach to generate sub-cycle optical transients

The availability of electromagnetic pulses with controllable field waveform and extremely short duration, even below a single optical cycle, is imperative to fully harness strong-field processes and to gain insight into ultrafast light-driven mechanisms occurring in the attosecond time-domain. The recently demonstrated parametric waveform synthesis (PWS) introduces an energy-, power- and spectrum-scalable method to generate non-sinusoidal sub-cycle optical waveforms by coherently combining different phase-stable pulses attained via optical parametric amplifiers. Significant technological developments have been made to overcome the stability issues related to PWS and to obtain an effective and reliable waveform control system. Here we present the main ingredients enabling PWS technology. The design choices concerning the optical, mechanical and electronic setups are justified by analytical/numerical modeling and benchmarked by experimental observations. In its present incarnation, PWS technology enables the generation of field-controllable mJ-level few-femtosecond pulses spanning the visible to infrared range.

Broadband conical third harmonic generation in femtosecond filament-modified fused silica

High repetition rate femtosecond filaments in transparent solids produce conical third harmonic generation due to filament-induced material reorganization in the form of periodic volume nanogratings. Here we report on conical third harmonic generation that accompanies supercontinuum generation in fused silica using broadly tunable femtosecond pulses. The measurement of third harmonic cone angles with driving wavelengths in the 1-3-μm range fully supports the noncollinear phase-matching scenario that involves a reciprocal lattice vector of the filament-inscribed nanograting. The nanograting provides an octave-spanning phase-matching bandwidth, as attested by the measurements of the angle-resolved spectra of broadband conical third harmonic emission.

Conical third harmonic generation from volume nanogratings induced by filamentation of femtosecond pulses in transparent bulk materials

We report on observations of conical third harmonic emission that emerges during supercontinuum generation produced by self-focusing and filamentation of high (20-200 kHz) repetition rate 180 fs, 1035 nm pulses from an amplified Yb:KGW laser in various nonlinear crystals and glasses: YAG, sapphire, YLF, LiF, CaF₂, MgF₂, LiSAF, fused silica and BK-7 glass. We show that conical third harmonic generation is a phase-matched four-wave mixing process, where noncollinear phase matching is achieved by means of reciprocal lattice vector, inversely proportional to the period of nanograting, which is inscribed by femtosecond filament in the volume of nonlinear material. The existence of a particular period required to phase match conical third harmonic generation was indirectly verified by investigations of periodicity features of high and low spatial frequency laser-induced periodic surface structures, in which matter is reorganized in a similar fashion.

High repetition rate green-pumped supercontinuum generation in calcium fluoride

It is demonstrated that supercontinuum generation geometry applying loose focusing (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {NA}=0.004$$\end{document}NA=0.004) of the pump beam into a long (25 mm) \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {CaF}_2$$\end{document}CaF2 sample is advantageous in terms of supercontinuum spectral extent and durability of damage-free operation of the nonlinear material as compared to a commonly used supercontinuum generation setup which employs tight focusing (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {NA}=0.012$$\end{document}NA=0.012) into a short (5 mm) sample and to setup which uses tight focusing into a long (25 mm) sample. More specifically, loose focusing into a long sample showed remarkably longer (20 min) damage-free operation of the nonlinear material, which was not translated with respect of the pump beam, while in tight focusing condition the sample is damaged just within 2 min of operation, leading to a complete extinction of the supercontinuum spectrum. The evolution of optical degradation of the nonlinear material in time and its impact to supercontinuum spectrum is studied in terms of filament-induced luminescence due to self-trapped exciton emission and light scattering at the pump wavelength indicating the onset of optical damage. Our findings are supported by the numerical simulations which compare relevant parameters related to filament propagation in tight and loose focusing conditions.
