Polarization-independent parametric time magnifier based on four-wave mixing

A time magnifier based on space-time duality has demonstrated comprehensive applications owing to its promising temporal resolution. However, conventional parametric time magnifiers are inherently polarization-sensitive; their output intensity depends not only on the intensity but also the polarization of signal under test (SUT). Therefore, they are mainly applied to SUT with fixed polarization. On the other hand, many complex optical signals exhibit simultaneous intensity and polarization dynamics. In this Letter, a polarization-independent (PI) time magnifier at 485-fs temporal resolution is first demonstrated, which provides accurate intensity information even for polarization-related signals. The PI time magnifier de-convolves intensity and polarization information. It, therefore, paves the way for in-depth analysis of various complex ultrafast phenomena involving simultaneous intensity and polarization dynamics such as rogue waves and vector solitons.

1.1-µm Band Extended Wide-Bandwidth Wavelength-Swept Laser Based on Polygonal Scanning Wavelength Filter

We demonstrated a 1.1-µm band extended wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) that combined two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) based on a polygonal scanning wavelength filter. The center wavelengths of the two SOAs were 1020 nm and 1140 nm, respectively. Two SOAs were connected in parallel in the form of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. At a scanning speed of 1.8 kHz, the 10-dB bandwidth of the spectral output and the average power were approximately 228 nm and 16.88 mW, respectively. Owing to the nonlinear effect of the SOA, a decrease was observed in the bandwidth according to the scanning speed. Moreover, the intensity of the WSL decreased because the oscillation time was smaller than the buildup time. In addition, a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cell was fabricated as an application of WSL, and the dynamic change of the first-order reflection of the CLC cell in the 1-µm band was observed using the WSL. The pitch jumps of the reflection band occurred according to the electric field applied to the CLC cell, and instantaneous changes were observed.

Sensitivity-enhanced ultrafast optical tomography by parametric- and Raman-amplified temporal imaging

To overcome the speed limitation of conventional optical tomography, a temporal imaging technique has been integrated with optical time-domain reflectometry to realize ultrafast temporally magnified (TM) tomography. In this Letter, the sensitivity of TM tomography has been further enhanced using optical parametric amplification and distributed Raman amplification, and this technique is named temporally encoded amplified and magnified (TEAM) tomography. As a result, a 78-dB sensitivity has been realized, comparable to ultrafast optical coherence tomography systems. In addition, an 86.7-μm axial resolution can be realized across a 67.5-mm imaging range. To demonstrate the significance of sensitivity improvement, tomographic imaging of a centimeter-thick phantom is provided at an A-scan rate of 44 MHz.

Panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging for seamless measurements of slowly-evolved femtosecond pulse dynamics

Single-shot real-time characterization of optical waveforms with sub-picosecond resolution is essential for investigating various ultrafast optical dynamics. However, the finite temporal recording length of current techniques hinders comprehensive understanding of many intriguing ultrafast optical phenomena that evolve over a timescale much longer than their fine temporal details. Inspired by the space-time duality and by stitching of multiple microscopic images to achieve a larger field of view in the spatial domain, here a panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging (PARTI) system is devised to scale up the temporal recording length without sacrificing the resolution. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the PARTI system is applied to study the dynamic waveforms of slowly evolved dissipative Kerr solitons in an ultrahigh-Q microresonator. Two 1.5-ns-long comprehensive evolution portraits are reconstructed with 740 fs resolution and dissipative Kerr soliton transition dynamics, in which a multiplet soliton state evolves into a stable singlet soliton state, are depicted.Real-time characterization of ultrafast dynamics comes with a tradeoff between temporal resolution and recording length. Here, Li et al. use a temporal reconstruction technique inspired by panoramic microscopy to image the dynamics of slowly evolved dissipative Kerr solitons in a microresonator.

Compact and stable temporally magnified tomography using a phase-locked broadband source

The temporally magnified tomography system is further improved in terms of resolution and imaging stability. We simplify the system configuration and improve the axial resolution simultaneously by utilizing a stabilized all-fiber broadband source. The highly stable spectrum of the source assisted by a phase-locked loop guarantees an improved imaging quality. In addition, the impact of the repetition-rate fluctuation of the source to the system stability is analyzed, which also applies to other temporal imaging systems. Achieving a 90-μm in-air resolution at 89-MHz A-scan rate and improved stability, we are taking one major step toward the practical application of this new optical tomographic modality.

Time-lenses for time-division multiplexing of optical OFDM channels

Time-lenses provide a promising platform for novel, broadband optical signal processing. However, in order to minimize system penalties, design constraints must be adequately taken into account. We investigate the impact of third-order-dispersion and nonlinear distortion on the performance of time-lens-based communication systems for the first time. Here, we propose a novel application of time-lenses - temporal compression and time-division multiplexing of optical OFDM channels, to provide a 1 Tb/s superchannel. Time-lens system performance degradations are investigated in our proposed system and the results are applicable to all four wave mixing based time-lens systems. Our work can help to optimize time-lens based communication systems.
