Recent Progresses on Experimental Investigations of Topological and Dissipative Solitons in Liquid Crystals

Solitons in liquid crystals have received increasing attention due to their importance in fundamental physical science and potential applications in various fields. The study of solitons in liquid crystals has been carried out for over five decades with various kinds of solitons being reported. Recently, a number of new types of solitons have been observed, among which, many of them exhibit intriguing dynamic behaviors. In this paper, we briefly review the recent progresses on experimental investigations of solitons in liquid crystals.

Photo-reconfigurable twisting structure in chiral liquid crystals triggered by photoresponsive surface

Shape-transformable molecular additives with photoresponsivity, such as azobenzene or spiropyran, in matter are known to decrease the local order parameter and lead to drastic state variations under light irradiation. For example, a liquid crystalline state can be transformed to an isotropic liquid state by photo-exciting a tiny amount of azobenzene additives from trans- to cis-conformers. On the other hand, structural or shape transformation without changing the phase state is also intriguing since it offers an opportunity for manipulating specific structures. Here, we demonstrate an active control of the topology of chiral particle-like twisting structures, dubbed toron, by light. Interestingly, the individual twisting structure is fully reconfigurable between spherical and unique branched topological states. We reveal that the shape transformation is driven by the free-energy competition between the variation of surface anchoring strength and the elastic energy stored in the twisting structure. The mean-field simulation based on the Landau-de Gennes framework shows that the elastic anisotropy plays the dominant role in modifying the toron topology upon weak anchoring. The results offer a new path for understanding the process of topology-involved shape transformation and fabrication of novel functional materials.

Periodic Arrays of Chiral Domains Generated from the Self-Assembly of Micropatterned Achiral Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystal

Achiral building blocks forming achiral structures is a common occurrence in nature, while chirality emerging spontaneously from an achiral system is usually associated with important scientific phenomena. We report on the spontaneous chiral symmetry-breaking phenomena upon the topographic confinement of achiral lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals in periodically arranged micrometer scale air pillars. The anisotropic fluid arranges into chiral domains that depend on the arrangement and spacing of the pillars. We characterize the resulting domains by polarized optical microscopy, support their reconstruction by numerical calculations, and extend the findings with experiments, which include chiral dopants. Well-controlled and addressed chiral structures will be useful in potential applications like programmable scaffolds for living liquid crystals and as sensors for detecting chirality at the molecular level.

Surface Stabilized Topological Solitons in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Photo-alignment is a versatile tool to pattern the alignment at the confining substrates in a liquid crystal (LC) cell. Arbitrary alignment patterns can be created by using projection with a spatial light modulator (SLM) for the illumination. We demonstrate that a careful design of the alignment patterns allows the stabilization of topological solitons in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cells, without the need for chirality or strong confinement. The created LC configurations are stabilized by the anchoring conditions imposed at the substrates. The photo-aligned background at both substrates is uniformly planar aligned, and ring-shaped regions with a 180° azimuthal rotation are patterned with an opposite sense of rotation at the top and bottom substrate. A disclination-free structure containing a closed ring of vertically oriented directors is formed when the patterned rings at the top and bottom substrate overlap. Thanks to the topological stability, a vertical director orientation in the bulk is observed even when the centra of both patterned rings are shifted over relatively large distances. The combination of numerical simulations with experimental measurements allows identification of the 3D director configuration in the bulk. A finite element (FE) Q-tensor simulation model is applied to find the equilibrium director configuration and optical simulations are used to confirm the correspondence with experimental microscopy measurements. The created LC configurations offer opportunities in the field of optical devices, light guiding and switching, particle trapping and studies of topological LC structures.

Topological solitons, cholesteric fingers and singular defect lines in Janus liquid crystal shells

Topological solitons are non-singular but topologically nontrivial structures in fields, which have fundamental significance across various areas of physics, similar to singular defects. Production and observation of singular and solitonic topological structures remain a complex undertaking in most branches of science - but in soft matter physics, they can be realized within the director field of a liquid crystal. Additionally, it has been shown that confining liquid crystals to spherical shells using microfluidics resulted in a versatile experimental platform for the dynamical study of topological transformations between director configurations. In this work, we demonstrate the triggered formation of topological solitons, cholesteric fingers, singular defect lines and related structures in liquid crystal shells. We show that to accommodate these objects, shells must possess a Janus nature, featuring both twisted and untwisted domains. We report the formation of linear and axisymmetric objects, which we identify as cholesteric fingers and skyrmions or elementary torons, respectively. We then take advantage of the sensitivity of shells to numerous external stimuli to induce dynamical transitions between various types of structures, allowing for a richer phenomenology than traditional liquid crystal cells with solid flat walls. Using gradually more refined experimental techniques, we induce the targeted transformation of cholesteric twist walls and fingers into skyrmions and elementary torons. We capture the different stages of these director transformations using numerical simulations. Finally, we uncover an experimental mechanism to nucleate arrays of axisymmetric structures on shells, thereby creating a system of potential interest for tackling crystallography studies on curved spaces.

Photo-responsive dye-doped liquid crystals for smart windows

An electric field drives most dye-doped liquid crystal devices. Here, we demonstrate a new photo-responsive dye-doped self-organized cholesteric liquid crystal device. Upon UV or blue light exposure, the helical twisting power of the chiral azobenzene changes because of the trans-cis isomerization. As a result, the initially vertically aligned liquid crystal directors and dye molecules will change from transparent state to dark state. Such a polarizer-free photo-activated dimmer can be used for wide range of applications, such as diffractive photonic devices, portable information system, vehicular head-up displays, and as a smart window for energy-saving buildings.

Enhancement of absorption and haze with hybrid anchoring of dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals

We demonstrated that hybrid anchoring of dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals (ChLCs) could be used for the simultaneous control of haze and transmittance. Hybrid anchoring of ChLCs can be obtained by the vertical anchoring at one substrate surface and planar anchoring at the other substrate surface. In a ChLC cell with hybrid anchoring, the LCs near the planar alignment layer are in the planar state, while those near the vertical alignment layer are in the focal-conic state. In the initial opaque state, the incident light can be absorbed by the LC mixture in the planar state and scattered by the LCs in the focal-conic state. The ChLC cell with hybrid anchoring exhibited lower transmittance and haze value than those of a focal-conic state in a ChLC cell with vertical anchoring. The cell can be switched to the transparent state without use of a complicated drive scheme at a driving voltage significantly lower than that for a double-layered cell.

Topology-commanded optical properties of bistable electric-field-induced torons in cholesteric bubble domains

Nowadays, complicated topological defects enable many experimental manipulations and configurational simulations of active soft matter for optical and photonic applications. Investigation of topological defects in soft anisotropic materials enables one to better understand three-dimensional orientation fields in cholesteric liquid crystals. Here, we describe optical properties of bistable bubble domain (BD) texture torons in a thin layer of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC), frustrated by homeotropic anchoring conditions, and reliably switchable by a random process. The control of macroscopic optical density and diffraction efficiency of the BD texture is demonstrated by a selection of a confinement ratio of the CLC. Experimentally reconstructed CLC director profile reveals the topology of BD torons allowing consideration of naturally occurring BD texture for applications in optical and photonic devices, which are bistably switchable between active and transparent optical states.

Theory of helicoids and skyrmions in confined cholesteric liquid crystals

Cholesteric liquid crystals experience geometric frustration when they are confined between surfaces with anchoring conditions that are incompatible with the cholesteric twist. Because of this frustration, they develop complex topological defect structures, which may be helicoids or skyrmions. We develop a theory for these structures, which extends previous theoretical research by deriving exact solutions for helicoids with the assumption of constant azimuth, calculating numerical solutions for helicoids and skyrmions with varying azimuth, and interpreting the results in terms of competition between terms in the free energy.

Cholesteric liquid crystals in rectangular microchannels: skyrmions and stripes

In this paper, we present experimental and numerical studies on the microstructures of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) confined in rectangular micron-channels. By using a sequence of microfabrication techniques we fabricated the micro-sized channels with accurately controlled size, aspect ratio and homeotropic surface anchoring. Through optical microscopic studies we established a phase diagram for the liquid crystal defect textures as a function of the channel depth and width. For the channel width larger than ∼2 times the cholesteric pitch p, the LC molecules are oriented primarily vertical to the channel when the channel depth is below 0.75p, form bubble domain defects when the channel depth is around 0.75p, and form stripe textures when the cell depth is above the cholesteric pitch p. In addition, the bubble domain size and the stripe texture periodicity are found to grow with the increase of the channel width. For the channel width smaller than ∼2p and the channel depth between 0.6p to 1.1p, no textures can be observed in the channels. Numerical simulations based on a director tensor relaxation approach yield detailed molecular director fields, and show that the bubble domain defects are baby-skyrmions and that the stripes are the first type of cholesteric fingerprints. A comparison with previous experiments and numerical simulations indicates that the size of the microchannels also influences what type of soliton-like topological textures form in the CLCs confined in the channels.

Reversal of helicoidal twist handedness near point defects of confined chiral liquid crystals

Handedness of the director twist in cholesteric liquid crystals is commonly assumed to be the same throughout the medium, determined solely by the chirality of constituent molecules or chiral additives, albeit distortions of the ground-state helicoidal configuration often arise due to the effects of confinement and external fields. We directly probe the twist directionality of liquid crystal director structures through experimental three-dimensional imaging and numerical minimization of the elastic free energy and show that spatially localized regions of handedness opposite to that of the chiral liquid crystal ground state can arise in the proximity of twisted-soliton-bound topological point defects. In chiral nematic liquid crystal confined to a film that has a thickness less than the cholesteric pitch and perpendicular surface boundary conditions, twisted solitonic structures embedded in a uniform unwound far-field background with chirality-matched handedness locally relieve confinement-imposed frustration and tend to be accompanied by point defects and smaller geometry-required, energetically costly regions of opposite twist handedness. We also describe a spatially localized structure, dubbed a "twistion," in which a twisted solitonic three-dimensional director configuration is accompanied by four point defects. We discuss how our findings may impinge on the stability of localized particlelike director field configurations in chiral and nonchiral liquid crystals.
