Observation of localized flat-band modes in a quasi-one-dimensional photonic rhombic lattice

On-Chip Photonic Localization in Aharonov-Bohm Cages Composed of Microring Lattices

Flatband localization endowed with robustness holds great promise for disorder-immune light transport, particularly in the advancement of optical communication and signal processing. However, effectively harnessing these principles for practical applications in nanophotonic devices remains a significant challenge. Herein, we delve into the investigation of on-chip photonic localization in AB cages composed of indirectly coupled microring lattices. By strategically vertically shifting the auxiliary rings, we successfully introduce a magnetic flux of π into the microring lattice, thereby facilitating versatile control over the localization and delocalization of light. Remarkably, the compact edge modes of this structure exhibit intriguing topological properties, rendering them strongly robust against disorders, regardless of the size of the system. Our findings open up new avenues for exploring the interaction between flatbands and topological photonics on integrated platforms.

Realization of all-band-flat photonic lattices

Flatbands play an important role in correlated quantum matter and have promising applications in photonic lattices. Synthetic magnetic fields and destructive interference in lattices are traditionally used to obtain flatbands. However, such methods can only obtain a few flatbands with most bands remaining dispersive. Here we realize all-band-flat photonic lattices of an arbitrary size by precisely controlling the coupling strengths between lattice sites to mimic those in Fock-state lattices. This allows us to go beyond the perturbative regime of strain engineering and group all eigenmodes in flatbands, which simultaneously achieves high band flatness and large usable bandwidth. We map out the distribution of each flatband in the lattices and selectively excite the eigenmodes with different chiralities. Our method paves a way in controlling band structure and topology of photonic lattices.

Surge of power transmission in flat and nearly flat band lattices

Flat band systems can yield interesting phenomena, such as dispersion suppression of waves with frequency at the band. While linear transport vanishes, the corresponding nonlinear case is still an open question. Here, we study power transmission along nonlinear sawtooth lattices due to waves with the flat band frequency injected at one end. While there is no power transfer for small intensity, there is a threshold amplitude above which a surge of power transmission occurs, i.e., supratransmission, for defocusing nonlinearity. This is due to a nonlinear evanescent wave with the flat band frequency that becomes unstable. We show that dispersion suppression and supratransmission also exist even when the band is nearly flat.

Compact localized boundary states in a quasi-1D electronic diamond-necklace chain

Zero-energy modes localized at the ends of one-dimensional (1D) wires hold great potential as qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computing. However, all the candidates known to date exhibit a wave function that decays exponentially into the bulk and hybridizes with other nearby zero-modes, thus hampering their use for braiding operations. Here, we show that a quasi-1D diamond-necklace chain exhibits an unforeseen type of robust boundary state, namely compact localized zero-energy modes that do not decay into the bulk. We find that this state emerges due to the presence of a latent symmetry in the system. We experimentally realize the diamond-necklace chain in an electronic quantum simulator setup.

Towards lattice-gas description of low-temperature properties above the Haldane and cluster-based Haldane ground states of a mixed spin-(1,1/2) Heisenberg octahedral chain

The rich ground-state phase diagram of the mixed spin-(1,1/2) Heisenberg octahedral chain was previously elaborated from effective mixed-spin Heisenberg chains, which were derived by employing a local conservation of a total spin on square plaquettes of an octahedral chain. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the thermodynamic properties of this model. In the highly frustrated parameter region the lowest-energy eigenstates of the mixed-spin Heisenberg octahedral chain belong to flat bands, which allow a precise description of low-temperature magnetic properties within the localized-magnon approach exploiting a classical lattice-gas model of hard-core monomers. The present article provides a more comprehensive version of the localized-magnon approach, which extends the range of its validity down to a less frustrated parameter region involving the Haldane and cluster-based Haldane ground states. A comparison between results of the developed localized-magnon theory and accurate numerical methods such as full exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanczos technique convincingly evidence that the low-temperature magnetic properties above the Haldane and the cluster-based Haldane ground states can be extracted from a classical lattice-gas model of hard-core monomers and dimers, which is additionally supplemented by a hard-core particle spanned over the whole lattice representing the gapped Haldane phase.

Controlled Transport Based on Multiorbital Aharonov-Bohm Photonic Caging

The induction of synthetic magnetic fields on lattice structures allows an effective control of their localization and transport properties. In this Letter, we generate effective π magnetic fluxes on a multiorbital diamond lattice, where first-order (S) and second-order (P) modes effectively interact. We implement a z-scan method on femtosecond-laser-written photonic lattices and experimentally observe Aharonov-Bohm caging for S and P modes, as a consequence of a band transformation and the emergence of a spectrum composed of three degenerated flat bands. As an application, we demonstrate a perfect control of the dynamics, where we translate an input excitation across the lattice in a completely linear and controlled way. Our model, based on a flat band spectrum, allows us to choose the direction of transport depending on the excitation site or input phase.

Experimental Observation of Interorbital Coupling

Interorbital coupling refers to the possibility of exciting orbital states by otherwise orthogonal noninteracting modes, a forbidden process in photonic lattices due to intrinsic propagation constant detuning. In this Letter, using a femtosecond (fs) laser writing technique, we experimentally demonstrate that fundamental and excited orbital states can couple each other when located at different spatial positions. We perform a full characterization of an asymmetric double-well-like potential and implement a scan method to effectively map the dynamics along the propagation coordinate. Our fundamental observation also constitutes a direct solution for a spatial mode converter device, which could be located in any position inside a photonic glass chip. By taking advantage of the phase structure of higher-order photonic modes and the effective negative coupling generated, we propose a trimer configuration as a phase beam splitter, which could be of great relevance for multiplexing and interference-based photonic concatenated operations.

Inverse Anderson transition in photonic cages

Transport inhibition via Anderson localization is ubiquitous in disordered periodic lattices. However, in crystals displaying only flatbands, disorder can lift macroscopic band flattening, removing geometric localization and enabling transport in certain conditions. Such a striking phenomenon, dubbed inverse Anderson transition and predicted for three-dimensional flatband systems, has thus far not been directly observed. Here we suggest a simple quasi one-dimensional photonic flatband system, namely, an Aharonov-Bohm photonic cage, in which correlated binary disorder induces an inverse Anderson transition and ballistic transport.

Flat-Band Localization in Creutz Superradiance Lattices

Flat bands play an important role in diffraction-free photonics and attract fundamental interest in many-body physics. Here we report the engineering of flat-band localization of collective excited states of atoms in Creutz superradiance lattices with tunable synthetic gauge fields. Magnitudes and phases of the lattice hopping coefficients can be independently tuned to control the state components of the flat band and the Aharonov-Bohm phases. We can selectively excite the flat band and control the flat-band localization with the synthetic gauge field. Our study provides a room-temperature platform for flat bands of atoms and holds promising applications in exploring correlated topological materials.

Localized modes in a two-dimensional lattice with a pluslike geometry

We investigate analytically and numerically the existence and dynamical stability of different localized modes in a two-dimensional photonic lattice comprising a square plaquette inscribed in the dodecagon lattices. The eigenvalue spectrum of the underlying linear lattice is characterized by a net formed of one flat band and four dispersive bands. By tailoring the intersite coupling coefficient ratio, opening of gaps between two pairs of neighboring dispersive bands can be induced, while the fully degenerate flat band characterized by compact eigenmodes stays nested between two inner dispersive bands. The nonlinearity destabilizes the compact modes and gives rise to unique families of localized modes in the newly opened gaps, as well as in the semi-infinite gaps. The governing mechanism of mode localization in that case is the light energy self-trapping effect. We have shown the stability of a few families of nonlinear modes in gaps. The suggested lattice model may serve for probing various artificial flat-band systems such as ultracold atoms in optical lattices, periodic electronic networks, and polariton condensates.

Engineering topological phase transition and Aharonov-Bohm caging in a flux-staggered lattice

A tight binding network of diamond shaped unit cells trapping a staggered magnetic flux distribution is shown to exhibit a topological phase transition under a controlled variation of the flux trapped in a cell. A simple real space decimation technique maps a binary flux staggered network into an equivalent Su-Shrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. In this way, dealing with a subspace of the full degrees of freedom, we show that a topological phase transition can be initiated by tuning the applied magnetic field that eventually simulates an engineering of the numerical values of the overlap integrals in the paradigmatic SSH model. Thus one can use an external agent, rather than monitoring the intrinsic property of a lattice to control the topological properties. This is advantageous from an experimental point of view. We also provide an in-depth description and analysis of the topologically protected edge states, and discuss how, by tuning the flux from outside one can enhance the spatial extent of the Aharonov-Bohm caging of single particle states for any arbitrary period of staggering. This feature can be useful for the study of transport of quantum information. Our results are exact.

Artificial gauge field switching using orbital angular momentum modes in optical waveguides

The discovery of artificial gauge fields controlling the dynamics of uncharged particles that otherwise elude the influence of standard electromagnetic fields has revolutionised the field of quantum simulation. Hence, developing new techniques to induce these fields is essential to boost quantum simulation of photonic structures. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the generation of an artificial gauge field in a photonic lattice by modifying the topological charge of a light beam, overcoming the need to modify the geometry along the evolution or impose external fields. In particular, we show that an effective magnetic flux naturally appears when a light beam carrying orbital angular momentum is injected into a waveguide lattice with a diamond chain configuration. To demonstrate the existence of this flux, we measure an effect that derives solely from the presence of a magnetic flux, the Aharonov-Bohm caging effect, which is a localisation phenomenon of wavepackets due to destructive interference. Therefore, we prove the possibility of switching on and off artificial gauge fields just by changing the topological charge of the input state, paving the way to accessing different topological regimes in a single structure, which represents an important step forward for optical quantum simulation.

Direct Observation of Flatband Loop States Arising from Nontrivial Real-Space Topology

Topological properties of lattices are typically revealed in momentum space using concepts such as the Chern number. Here, we study unconventional loop states, namely, the noncontractible loop states (NLSs) and robust boundary modes, mediated by nontrivial topology in real space. While such states play a key role in understanding fundamental physics of flatband systems, their experimental observation has been hampered because of the challenge in realizing desired boundary conditions. Using a laser-writing technique, we optically establish photonic kagome lattices with both an open boundary by properly truncating the lattice, and a periodic boundary by shaping the lattice into a Corbino geometry. We thereby demonstrate the robust boundary modes winding around the entire edge of the open lattice and, more directly, the NLSs winding in a closed loop akin to that in a torus. We prove that the NLSs due to real-space topology persist in ideal Corbino-shaped kagome lattices of arbitrary size. Our results could be of great importance for our understanding of the singular flatbands and the intriguing physics phenomenon applicable for strongly interacting systems.

Experimental Realization of PT-Symmetric Flat Bands

The capability to temporarily arrest the propagation of optical signals is one of the main challenges hampering the ever more widespread use of light in rapid long-distance transmission as well as all-optical on-chip signal processing or computations. To this end, flat-band structures are of particular interest, since their hallmark compact eigenstates not only allow for the localization of wave packets, but importantly, also protect their transverse profile from deterioration without the need for additional diffraction management. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that, far from being a nuisance to be compensated, judiciously tailored loss distributions can, in fact, be the key ingredient in synthesizing such flat bands in non-Hermitian environments. We probe their emergence in the vicinity of an exceptional point and directly observe the associated compact localized modes that can be excited at arbitrary positions of the periodic lattice.

Quantum Network Transfer and Storage with Compact Localized States Induced by Local Symmetries

We propose modulation protocols designed to generate, store, and transfer compact localized states in a quantum network. Induced by parameter tuning or local reflection symmetries, such states vanish outside selected domains of the complete system and are therefore ideal for information storage. Their creation and transfer is here achieved either via amplitude phase flips or via optimal temporal control of intersite couplings. We apply the concept to a decorated, locally symmetric Lieb lattice where one sublattice is dimerized, and also demonstrate it for more complex setups. The approach allows for a flexible storage and transfer of states along independent paths in lattices supporting flat energetic bands. We further demonstrate a method to equip any network featuring static perfect state transfer of single-site excitations with compact localized states, thus increasing the storage ability of these networks. We show that these compact localized states can likewise be perfectly transferred through the corresponding network by suitable, time-dependent modifications. The generic network and protocols proposed can be utilized in various physical setups such as atomic or molecular spin lattices, photonic waveguide arrays, and acoustic setups.

Spin-polarized localization in a magnetized chain

We investigate a simple tight-binding Hamiltonian to understand the stability of spin-polarized transport of states with an arbitrary spin content in the presence of disorder. The general spin state is made to pass through a linear chain of magnetic atoms, and the localization lengths are computed. Depending on the value of spin, the chain of magnetic atoms unravels a hidden transverse dimensionality that can be exploited to engineer energy regimes where only a selected spin state is allowed to retain large localization lengths. We carry out a numerical anmalysis to understand the roles played by the spin projections in different energy regimes of the spectrum. For this purpose, we introduce a new measure, dubbed spin-resolved localization length. We study uncorrelated disorder in the potential profile offered by the magnetic substrate or in the orientations of the magnetic moments concerning a given direction in space. Our results show that the spin filtering effect is robust against weak disorder and hence the proposed system should be a good candidate model for experimental realizations of spin-selective transport devices.

Photonic flat-band laser

Flat-band photonic lattices, i.e., arrays of waveguides or resonators displaying a flat Bloch band, offer new routes for light trapping and distortion-free imaging. Here it is shown that flat-band lattices can show stable and cooperative laser emission when optical gain is supplied to the system, despite the large degree of degeneracy of flat-band supermodes. By considering a quasi one-dimensional rhombic lattice of coupled semiconductor microrings, selective pumping of the outer sublattices can induce cooperative lasing in a supermode of the flat band.

Experimental Observation of Aharonov-Bohm Cages in Photonic Lattices

We report on the experimental realization of a uniform synthetic magnetic flux and the observation of Aharonov-Bohm cages in photonic lattices. Considering a rhombic array of optical waveguides, we engineer modulation-assisted tunneling processes that effectively produce nonzero magnetic flux per plaquette. This synthetic magnetic field for light can be tuned at will by varying the phase of the modulation. In the regime where half a flux quantum is realized in each plaquette, all the energy bands dramatically collapse into nondispersive (flat) bands and all eigenstates are completely localized. We demonstrate this Aharonov-Bohm caging by studying the propagation of light in the bulk of the photonic lattice. Besides, we explore the dynamics on the edge of the lattice and discuss how the corresponding edge states can be continuously connected to the topological edge states of the Creutz ladder. Our photonic lattice constitutes an appealing platform where the interplay between engineered gauge fields, frustration, localization, and topological properties can be finely studied.

Light propagation in binary kagome ribbons with evolving disorder

By introducing evolving disorder in the binary kagome ribbons, we study the establishment of diffusive spreading of flat band states characterized by diffractionless propagation in regular periodic ribbons. Our numerical analysis relies on controlling strength and rate of change of disorder during light propagation while tailoring binarism of the kagome ribbons in order to isolate the flat band with the gap from the rest of the ribbon's eigenvalue spectrum and study systematically its influence on diffusion. We show that the flat band plays a dominant role in the establishment of the diffusion for a given strength and rate of change of disorder, whereas the rest of the ribbon's eigenvalue spectrum induces only quantitative differences in the light spreading regimes. Due to the universality of studied phenomena, our findings may be of interest in various disordered physical systems with flat spectral bands, ranging from photonics to ultracold matter systems and plasmonics.

Flat-band light dynamics in Stub photonic lattices

We experimentally study a Stub photonic lattice and excite their localized linear states originated from an isolated Flat Band at the center of the linear spectrum. By exciting these modes in different regions of the lattice, we observe that they do not diffract across the system and remain well trapped after propagating along the crystal. By using their wave nature, we are able to combine – in phase and out of phase – two neighbor states into a coherent superposition. These observations allow us to propose a novel setup for performing three different all-optical logical operations such as OR, AND, and XOR, positioning Flat Band systems as key setups to perform all-optical operations at any level of power.

Controllable photon and phonon localization in optomechanical Lieb lattices

The Lieb lattice featuring flat band is not only important in strongly-correlated many-body physics, but also can be utilized to inspire new quantum devices. Here we propose an optomechanical Lieb lattice, where the flat-band physics of photon-phonon polaritons is demonstrated. The tunability of the band structure of the optomechanical arrays allows one to obtain an approximate photon or phonon flat band as well as the transition between them. This ultimately leads to the result that the controllable photon or phonon localization could be realized by the path interference effects. This study offers an alternative approach to explore the exotic photon and phonon many-body effects, which has potential applications in the future hybrid-photon-phonon quantum network and engineering new type solid-state quantum devices.

Observation of robust flat-band localization in driven photonic rhombic lattices

We demonstrate that a flat-band state in a quasi-one-dimensional rhombic lattice is robust in the presence of external drivings along the lattice axis. The lattice was formed by periodic arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides, and the external drivings were realized by modulating the paths of the waveguides. We excited a superposition of flat-band eigenmodes at the input and observed that this state does not diffract in the presence of static, as well as high-frequency sinusoidal drivings. This robust localization is due to destructive interference of the analogous wavefunction and is associated with the symmetry in the lattice geometry. We then excited the dispersive bands and observed Bloch oscillations and coherent destruction of tunneling.

Observation of dipolar transport in one-dimensional photonic lattices

We experimentally study the transport properties of dipolar and fundamental modes on one dimensional (1D) coupled waveguide arrays. By carefully modulating a wide optical beam, we are able to effectively excite dipolar or fundamental modes to study discrete diffraction (single-site excitation) and gaussian beam propagation (multi-site excitation plus a phase gradient). We observe that dipolar modes experience a larger spreading area due to an effective larger coupling constant, which is found to be more than two times larger than the one for fundamental modes. Additionally, we study the effect of non-diagonal disorder and find that while fundamental modes are already trapped on a weakly disorder array, dipoles are still able to propagate across the system.

Transport in Sawtooth photonic lattices

We investigate, theoretically and experimentally, a photonic realization of a Sawtooth lattice. This special lattice exhibits two spectral bands, with one of them experiencing a complete collapse to a highly degenerate flat band for a special set of inter-site coupling constants. We report the observation of different transport regimes, including strong transport inhibition due to the appearance of the non-diffractive flat band. Moreover, we excite localized Shockley surface states residing in the gap between the two linear bands.

Observation of localized flat-band states in Kagome photonic lattices

We report the first experimental demonstration of localized flat-band states in optically induced Kagome photonic lattices. Such lattices exhibit a unique band structure with the lowest band being completely flat (diffractionless) in the tight-binding approximation. By taking the advantage of linear superposition of the flat-band eigenmodes of the Kagome lattices, we demonstrate a high-fidelity transmission of complex patterns in such two-dimensional pyrochlore-like photonic structures. Our numerical simulations find good agreement with experimental observations, upholding the belief that flat-band lattices can support distortion-free image transmission.
