Polarization-rotating, Bragg-grating filters on silicon-on-insulator strip waveguides using asymmetric periodic corner corrugations

Passive wavelength selective polarization rotator in a hybrid waveguide platform

Polarization rotation and wavelength filtering are key functionalities used to build complex photonic integrated circuits. Both these functionalities have been demonstrated in various material and device platforms. We propose, for the first time, a fully passive wavelength selective polarization rotation in silicon nitride/amorphous silicon hybrid waveguide. We demonstrate TE0 → TM0 and TM0 → TE0 wavelength selective polarization rotator-cum-filter with a measured 3dB bandwidth of 14.8 nm. Further, we experimentally demonstrate a proof of concept for simultaneous coarse wavelength division multiplexing and polarization rotation for the first time in a passive configuration. We also show the feasibility of bandwidth engineering from 0.59 nm to 81 nm, enabled by the unique flexibility of the proposed hybrid waveguide.

Integrated polarization-free Bragg filters with subwavelength gratings for photonic sensing

We present polarization-free Bragg filters having subwavelength gratings (SWGs) in the lateral cladding region. This Bragg design expands modal fields toward upper cladding, resulting in enhanced light interaction with sensing analytes. Two device configurations are proposed and examined, one with index-matched coupling between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes and the other one with hybrid-mode (HM) coupling. Both configurations introduce a strong coupling between two orthogonal modes (either TE-TM or HM1-HM2) and rotate the polarization of the input wave through Bragg reflection. The arrangements of SWGs help to achieve two configurations with different orthogonal modes, while expanding modal profiles toward the upper cladding region. Our proposed SWG-assisted Bragg gratings with polarization independency eliminate the need for a polarization controller and effectively tailor the modal properties, enhancing the potential of integrated photonic sensing applications.

Polarization-independent photonic Bragg grating filter with cladding asymmetry

A photonic Bragg grating is a fundamental building block that reflects the direction of wave propagation through spatial phase modulation and can be implemented using sidewall corrugation. However, due to the asymmetric aspect ratio of a waveguide cross section, typical Bragg gratings exhibit a strong polarization sensitivity. Here, we show that photonic Bragg gratings with cladding asymmetry can enable polarization-independent notch filters by rotating input polarizations. Such Bragg gratings strongly couple transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes propagating in opposite directions, filtering the input signal and reflecting the rotated mode. We analyzed this polarization-rotating Bragg grating using the coupled-mode theory and experimentally demonstrated it on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Our device concept is simple to implement and compatible with other platforms, readily available as polarization transparent Bragg components.

On-chip optical narrowband reflector based on anti-symmetric Bragg grating

We propose an on-chip optical narrowband reflector (NBR) based on two cascaded Bragg gratings (BGs). A π phase shifted anti-symmetric Bragg grating (π-PS-ASBG) and a rear uniform Bragg grating (UBG), are in-line connected. The π-PS-ASBG provides a hybrid mode resonance between the even- and odd TE (TE₀ and TE₁) modes, while the UBG is used as a rear reflector to reflect the TE₀ mode that transmitted from the π-PS-ASBG. Different from traditional UBG, the reflection bandwidth decreases when the coupling coefficient increases. The calculated 3-dB bandwidth is 0.16 nm when the whole grating length is 400 µm. The proposed NBR can be applied in the cases requiring narrow reflection such as narrow linewidth semiconductor lasers.

Narrow-band, polarization-independent, transmission filter in a silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide

We report on a narrow-band, polarization-independent, transmission filter using phase-shifted, polarization-rotating Bragg gratings (PRBGs) in a silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide. In our device, phase-shifted PRBGs provide narrow transmission peaks for the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, both at the same wavelength. We present results for a 330.6 μm long device that has transmission peaks centered at 1556.36 nm, 3 dB bandwidths of 0.26 nm, and extinction ratios of 19 dB for both TE and TM modes. We also integrated a heater onto our device and obtained a wavelength tuning efficiency of 0.028 nm/mW for both TE and TM modes.

On-chip mode converter based on two cascaded Bragg gratings

We propose an on-chip mode converter via two cascaded Bragg reflection processes. A forward conversion between two guided modes can be achieved with the aid of an additional mode. The proposed structure is theoretically studied and simulated via the rigorous three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. The bandwidth and central wavelength of the proposed mode converter can be adjusted according to our theoretical analysis and simulation results. By applying the similar design approaches as fiber Bragg gratings, conversion spectra with different shapes can be obtained. As an example, several mode converters with bandpass and sidelobe-reduced spectra are designed. We also investigate and verify the mode conversion by experiment. Therefore, the proposed method may pave a new path for the mode converters with desired conversion spectra.

Broad bandwidth and large fabrication tolerance polarization beam splitter based on multimode anti-symmetric Bragg sidewall gratings

A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE₀) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE₁), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE₁ reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20  μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Silicon band-rejection and band-pass filter based on asymmetric Bragg sidewall gratings in a multimode waveguide

A silicon photonic wire filter based on an asymmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. The operating principle is based on the contra-directional coupling between the transverse electric fundamental (TE0) and first-order (TE1) modes, which is enabled by the asymmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations. An asymmetric Y-junction is cascaded at the input port of the filter so as to drop the Bragg reflection. Compared with conventional Bragg grating-based filters, this device eliminates the back reflection at the input port and the 6 dB inherent insertion loss at the drop port; moreover, a narrow 3 dB bandwidth can be obtained with a large critical dimension as a result of the weak coupling strength between the TE0 and TE1 modes inside the multimode waveguide. Experimental results show that a bandwidth of ∼2.8  nm is achieved by a large corrugation width of 150 nm. The insertion loss at the drop port is -2.1  dB, and the extinction ratio is -33  dB at the through port.
