Enhanced photoluminescence properties of bismuth sulfide nanocrystals with core-shell Ag@SiO2

Plasmonic quenching and enhancement: metal-quantum dot nanohybrids for fluorescence biosensing

Plasmonic metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are two of the most widely applied nanomaterials for optical biosensing and bioimaging. While their combination for fluorescence quenching via nanosurface energy transfer (NSET) or Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) offers powerful ways of tuning and amplifying optical signals and is relatively common, metal-QD nanohybrids for plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF) have been much less prevalent. A major reason is the competition between fluorescence quenching and enhancement, which poses important challenges for optimizing distances, orientations, and spectral overlap toward maximum PEF. In this feature article, we discuss the interplay of the different quenching and enhancement mechanisms (a mixed distance dependence of quenching and enhancement - "quenchancement") to better understand the obstacles that must be overcome for the development of metal-QD nanohybrid-based PEF biosensors. The different nanomaterials, their combination within various surface and solution based design concepts, and their structural and photophysical characterization are reviewed and applications toward advanced optical biosensing and bioimaging are presented along with guidelines and future perspectives for sensitive, selective, and versatile bioanalytical research and biomolecular diagnostics with metal-QD nanohybrids.

Hollow nanosphere arrays with a high-index contrast for enhanced scintillating light output from β-Ga2O3 crystals

β-Ga₂O₃ is a new type of fast scintillator with potential applications in medical imaging and nuclear radiation detection with high count-rate situations. Because of the severe total internal reflection with its high refractive index, the light extraction efficiency of β-Ga₂O₃ crystals is rather low, which would limit the performance of detection systems. In this paper, we use hollow nanosphere arrays with a high-index contrast to enhance the light extraction efficiency of β-Ga₂O₃ crystals. We can increase the transmission diffraction efficiency and reduce the reflection diffraction efficiency through controlling the refractive index and the thickness of the shell of the hollow nanospheres, which can lead to a significant increase in the light extraction efficiency. The relationships between the light extraction efficiency and the refractive index and thickness of the shell of the hollow nanospheres are investigated by both numerical simulations and experiments. It is found that when the refractive index of the shell of the hollow nanospheres is higher than that of β-Ga₂O₃, the light extraction efficiency is mainly determined by the diffraction efficiency of light transmitted from the surface with the hollow nanosphere arrays. When the refractive index of the shell is less than that of β-Ga₂O₃, the light extraction efficiency is determined by the ratio of the diffraction efficiency of the light transmitted from the surface with the hollow nanosphere arrays to the diffraction efficiency of the light that can escape from the lateral surface.

Photoluminescence enhancement in wide spectral range excitation in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal/Ag nanostructure via surface plasmon coupling

This work demonstrates the surface plasmon (SP)-exciton coupling effect on the photoluminescence (PL) enhancement in CsPbBr₃ nanocrystal (NC) at PMMA/Ag nanostructure (NS) in wide spectral range excitation. The spectra dependent time resolved PL measurement reveals that the emission photons are from the recombination of localized excitons and the PL enhancement can be attributed to the near-field effect, which is also supported by evidence that the enhancements are nearly the same in the whole excitation wavelength from 200 nm to 900 nm. The non-spectral dependence of the enhancement factor suggests that there is the same dynamic process of hot electrons in CsPbBr₃ NC in multiphoton excitation. The hot electrons will relax into localized exciton states, and the electric field generated by SPs will enhance the radiative recombination of excitons. This work will have benefits for revealing dynamics of hot electron relaxing and interactions in multi-photon absorption, as well as the inner mechanism of SP coupling effects.

Plasmon-enhanced luminescence in novel complex conjugated polymer nanoparticles

A core-shell structure of novel complex conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) consisting of poly(2-methoxy,5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene), polyethyleneimine (PEI) is developed. PEI is used to construct CPN@PEI core-shell structure through electrostatic attraction, and shell thickness can be controlled by PEI. Small Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (ANPs) are then inserted into CPN@PEI core-shell structure to plasmonically tune luminescence properties. The coupling structure with double polymer core-shell CPN@PEI and ANPs presents unique luminescent characters, and maximum luminescence enhancement is realized when shell thickness is 8.6 nm. The strategies taking polymer as shell material in construction of core-shell complex CPNs and tuning optical properties by ANPs shall have significant values in applications of CPNs as probes and fluorescent tags in biological science.
