Low-Cost 3D Printer Drawn Optical Microfibers for Smartphone Colorimetric Detection

A fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer extruder was utilized as a micro-furnace draw tower for the direct fabrication of low-cost optical fibers. An air-clad multimode microfiber was drawn from optically transparent polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) filament. A custom-made spooling collection allows for an automatic variation of fiber diameter between ϕ ∼ 72 to 397 μm by tuning the drawing speed. Microstructure imaging as well as the 3D beam profiling of the transmitted beam in the orthogonal axes was used to show good quality, functioning microfiber fabrication with uniform diameter and identical beam profiles for orthogonal axes. The drawn microfiber was used to demonstrate budget smartphone colorimetric-based absorption measurement to detect the degree of adulteration of olive oils with soybean oil.

3D printed long period gratings and their applications as high sensitivity shear-strain and torsion sensors

In this work we demonstrate the capability to measure shear-strain and torsion loads by bonding an optical fiber to a 3D printed periodic grooved plate. The device acts as a long period grating where the resonances show loss tunability ranging from ∼0 up to ∼20 dB, achieving sensitivities values for the dip transmission ratio as function of the load of 0.12 /mε and 0.21/deg, for shear-strain and torsion loads ranging from 0-∼8 mε and 1-∼4 deg, respectively. The low wavelength drift allowed us to operate the sensor through intensity demodulation techniques, showing good tracking performance of external stimuli.

UV Inscription and Pressure Induced Long-Period Gratings through 3D Printed Amplitude Masks

In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the capability to inscribe long-period gratings (LPGs) with UV radiation using simple and low cost amplitude masks fabricated with a consumer grade 3D printer. The spectrum obtained for a grating with 690 µm period and 38 mm length presented good quality, showing sharp resonances (i.e., 3 dB bandwidth < 3 nm), low out-of-band loss (~0.2 dB), and dip losses up to 18 dB. Furthermore, the capability to select the resonance wavelength has been demonstrated using different amplitude mask periods. The customization of the masks makes it possible to fabricate gratings with complex structures. Additionally, the simplicity in 3D printing an amplitude mask solves the problem of the lack of amplitude masks on the market and avoids the use of high resolution motorized stages, as is the case of the point-by-point technique. Finally, the 3D printed masks were also used to induce LPGs using the mechanical pressing method. Due to the better resolution of these masks compared to ones described on the state of the art, we were able to induce gratings with higher quality, such as low out-of-band loss (0.6 dB), reduced spectral ripples, and narrow bandwidths (~3 nm).

Hybrid LPG-FBG Based High-Resolution Micro Bending Strain Sensor

Sensitivity and reliability are essential factors for the practical implementation of a wearable sensor. This study explores the possibility of using a hybrid high-resolution Bragg grating sensor for achieving a fast response to dynamic, continuous motion and Bragg signal pattern monitoring measurement. The wavelength shift pattern for real-time monitoring in picometer units was derived by using femtosecond laser Bragg grating processing on an optical wave path with long-period grating. The possibility of measuring the demodulation system's Bragg signal pattern on the reflection spectrum of the femtosecond laser precision Bragg process and the long-period grating was confirmed. By demonstrating a practical method of wearing the sensor, the application of wearables was also explored. It is possible to present the applicability of sophisticated micro transformation measurement applications in picometer units.

Parabolic-cylinder-like long-period fiber grating sensor based on refractive index modulation enhancement effect

A parabolic-cylinder-like long-period fiber grating (PCL-LPFG) is designed and experimentally fabricated successfully by a CO₂ laser for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The PCL-LPFG consists of an array of nonplanar PCL-shaped grids. The theoretical model of the PCL-LPFG shows that the PCL grid enables enhancement of the refractive index (RI) modulation efficiency and changes the mode coupling characteristics. The experimental results show that the strain sensitivity is 1.6 pm/με in the range of 0-3010 με, which is fourfold compared to the conventional LPFG, and its RI sensitivity is as high as 1422.69 nm/RIU and 456.44 dB/RIU, respectively. The sensitivities of the PCL-LPFG can be further improved by optimizing the characteristic parameters of the grating. Furthermore, the resonant wavelength of the PCL-LPFG can be continuously tuned by temperature.

Control of higher-order cladding mode excitation with tailored femtosecond-written long period fiber gratings

We report on the detailed investigation of the core to cladding mode coupling in femtosecond-written long period fiber gratings (LPFG). It is shown that the excitation of higher-order cladding modes with strong selectivity and high precision is possible. The coupling behavior of several gratings, as well as its dependence on the modified core cross-section, is determined theoretically and confirmed experimentally by its spectral response. The presented tool paves the way for a completely new class of tailored LPFGs for different fiber integrated devices.

Ultralow chirp photonic crystal fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer

A photonic crystal fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer design was optimized to obtain high performance and ultralow chirp. Two long-period gratings were used to excite the cladding modes, and the rich structure of the cladding was tailored to obtain a slightly chirped free spectral range, as required by the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) Norm G.694.1. Finally, a fabrication tolerance analysis was performed. The advantages of the proposed device are an ultralow chirp, high bandwidth, and fabrication robustness tolerance.
