Localized spoof surface plasmons in textured open metal surfaces

Multipole resonance and Vernier effect in compact and flexible plasmonic structures

Spoof surface plasmons in corrugated metal surfaces allow tight field confinement and guiding even at low frequencies and are promising for compact microwave photonic devices. Here, we use metal-ink printing on flexible substrates to construct compact spoof plasmon resonators. We clearly observe multipole resonances in the microwave frequencies and demonstrate that they are still maintained even under significant bending. Moreover, by combining two resonators of slightly different sizes, we demonstrate spectral filtering via the Vernier effect. We selectively address a target higher-order resonance while suppressing the other modes. Finally, we investigate the index-sensing capability of printed plasmonic resonators. In the Vernier structure, we can control the resonance amplitude and frequency by adjusting a resonance overlap between two coupled resonators. The transmission amplitude can be maximized at a target refractive index, and this can provide more functionalities and increased design flexibility. The metal-ink printing of microwave photonic structures can be applied to various flexible devices. Therefore, we expect that the compact, flexible plasmonic structures demonstrated in this study may be useful for highly functional elements that can enable tight field confinement and manipulation.

Millimeter-Wave-Based Spoof Localized Surface Plasmonic Resonator for Sensing Glucose Concentration

Glucose-monitoring sensors are necessary and have been extensively studied to prevent and control health problems caused by diabetes. Spoof localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance sensors have been investigated for chemical sensing and biosensing. A spoof LSP has similar characteristics to an LSP in the microwave or terahertz frequency range but with certain advantages, such as a high-quality factor and improved sensitivity. In general, microwave spoof LSP resonator-based glucose sensors have been studied. In this study, a millimeter-wave-based spoof surface plasmonic resonator sensor is designed to measure glucose concentrations. The millimeter-wave-based sensor has a smaller chip size and higher sensitivity than microwave-frequency sensors. Therefore, the microfluidic channel was designed to be reusable and able to operate with a small sample volume. For alignment, a polydimethylsiloxane channel was simultaneously fabricated using a multilayer bonding film to attach the upper side of the pattern, which is concentrated in the electromagnetic field. This real-time sensor detects the glucose concentration via changes in the S11 parameter and operates at 28 GHz with an average sensitivity of 0.015669 dB/(mg/dL) within the 0-300 mg/dL range. The minimum detectable concentration and the distinguishable signal are 1 mg/dL and 0.015669 dB, respectively, from a 3.4 μL sample. The reusability and reproducibility were assessed through replicates.

Design of Wideband Bandpass Filter Based on Corrugated Disk Resonator with Multiple Resonant Modes

A corrugated disk resonator with eight grooves is proposed for wideband bandpass filter (BPF) design. Due to the spoof localized surface plasmons resonances of the corrugated metallic structure, the dipole, quadrupole, hexapole modes, and a fundamental mode excited by the introduced short-circuited via holes are employed to realize four transmission poles (TPs) in the passband. The theoretical analysis is described by the electric field and current distributions on the resonator. The resonant frequencies can be tuned easily by the parameters of the structure, which can be used to adjust the center frequency and bandwidth of the BPF freely. Furthermore, two resonators are cascaded to obtain eight TPs to improve the selectivity performance. Finally, three fabricated filters demonstrate the design method.

Manipulating multipole resonances in spoof localized surface plasmons for wideband filtering

The spoof localized surface plasmon (LSP) has been widely investigated but mostly with fixed multipole resonances. This Letter proposes a method to generate multipole resonances by adding a slit on the metallic ring of a complementary LSP. This slit theoretically introduces two new boundary conditions and new modes. To validate this approach, complementary LSPs with and without slits at three different angular positions are theoretically analyzed and numerically simulated. To validate and demonstrate the potential application of the proposed LSP structure, a bandpass filter (BPF) in a single-layer substrate is designed and measured by exciting the LSP with a slit on the metallic ring. The measured results show that by simply adding a slit, the BPF achieves a fractional bandwidth of 42.7% (2.5 GHz), for both |S₁₁|<-10dB and |S₂₁| within 1 dB variation. In the passband, a flat group delay between 0.57 ns and 0.75 ns is obtained. Moreover, the proposed structure features a low profile and a compact radius of 0.136 wavelength. By dynamically controlling slit/slits with varactors or diodes, the proposed structure is theoretically promising to be reconfigurable at microwave and even terahertz frequencies.

Deep-subwavelength spoof magnetic localized surface plasmon waveguiding over arbitrary bending angles

A deep-subwavelength metal spiral structure (MSS) waveguide with arbitrary bending angles was proposed and demonstrated to propagate magnetic localized surface plasmons (MLSPs) in theoretical, simulated and experimental ways. The uniform coupling strengths and frequencies for adjacent MSSs with different azimuthal angles represent a significant advancement in the development of structures supporting MLSPs over arbitrary bending angles. The consistency among spectra, dispersion, and field distributions for five MSSs indicates that backward propagation of MLSPs over arbitrary bending angles is possible. In addition, a long S-chain consisting of adjacent MSSs at various angles holds promise for applications involving long-distance MLSPs waveguides.

Selective amplification of spoof localized surface plasmons

Here, selective amplification of spoof localized surface plasmons (LSPs) has been demonstrated, where two coupling stubs gathering energies from the spoof LSPs resonator are designed on the back of the corrugated metal-insulator-metal ring resonator. The quadrupole mode is selected and amplified through the coupling stubs and the incorporated amplifier chip, and the measured transmission intensity has been increased from $ - {6.46}\;{\rm dB}$-6.46dB to 10.74 dB by adjusting the bias voltage. The amplification mechanism is fully investigated by using the circuit simulation and the full-wave simulation. The numerical simulations and experimental measurement agree well with each other. The active amplified resonator can be widely used in chemical and biological sensing in microwave frequency.

Plasmonically induced perfect absorption in graphene/metal system

The constructive interference of bright and dark plasmonic modes results in plasmon-induced absorption (PIA) effect. Here, we theoretically investigate PIA effect, which is realized by the constructive interference between a Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonance mode and a graphene quasi-guided mode. Numerical simulation reveals at least three advantages of our structure over previous ones. First, the extinction ratio can reach ~ 99.999%, resulting in the ultra-high figure of merit* (FOM*) as high as 106. Second, the intensity of this pronounced PIA effect can be optimized by adjusting the coupling distance. Third, the resonance frequency can be easily tunable by tuning the graphene Fermi level. This system may have potential applications in dynamically optical switching and biochemical sensing.

High-efficiency directional excitation of spoof surface plasmons by periodic scattering cylinders

In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple but efficient method to excite spoof surface plasmons (SSP) through periodic metallic cylinders at microwave frequencies. The rigorous multiple scattering theory indicates that most of the incident propagating waves can pass the cylinders and be converted into the desired harmonics. Furthermore, by tuning the incident angle, controlling the directions of the excited SSP at different frequencies is also realized. The numerical simulations achieve a bidirectional efficiency of 90% at 9.68 GHz and unidirectional efficiency of 79%-85% at 7.46-9.7 GHz, when the incident angle changes from 60° to 120°. Meanwhile, the maximum contrast ratio between the powers of SSP launched in two opposite directions can reach up to 34 dB. The experimental results under 90° and 77.5° illuminations at 9.68 and 8.56 GHz provide strong support for the coupling mechanism. This method may provide technique support in the SSP-based communication and imaging systems.

Quarter-mode spoof plasmonic resonator for a microfluidic chemical sensor

In this paper, we propose a microfluidic chemical sensor based on quarter-mode spoof plasmonic resonators with more compact overall size and higher sensitivity. First, a microfluidic channel engraved on polydimethylsiloxane is aligned to the upper part of the spoof plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) ring resonator where the strongest electric fields are observed at resonance. Although a resonant frequency shift of 270 MHz has been observed when the microfluidic channel is filled with pure ethanol, there is no resonant frequency shift when the ethanol concentration is changed from 40% to 60%. Then the spoof localized surface plasmons modes on the quarter corrugated MIM ring are analyzed, and a microfluidic sensor based on the quarter-mode spoof plasmonic resonator has been proposed. The proposed microfluidic sensor requires a very small amount (3.9 μL) of liquid for testing. After infilling the microfluidic channel with pure ethanol, the resonant frequency shift of 940 MHz has been observed on account of the dielectric changes. It is observed that the resonant frequency of the proposed sensor shifts from 5.07 to 6.62 GHz when the ethanol concentration is varied from 10% to 90%. It has been demonstrated that such quarter-mode spoof plasmonic resonator is well suited to a highly sensitive and compact microfluidic chemical sensor.

Gain-assisted ultra-high-Q spoof plasmonic resonator for the sensing of polar liquids

By directly incorporating a sub-wavelength amplifier chip into the spoof plasmonic resonator, the quality (Q) factor of the original passive resonator has been significantly increased by several orders of magnitude. The spoof plasmonic resonator is composed of a corrugated ring with a slit whose optimized offset angle φ is 45°, aiming to achieve a better Q-factor. By tuning the bias voltage applied to the amplifier chip that is placed across the slit, the Q factor has been increased from 9.8 to 21000 for the quadrupole mode when a plastic pipe filled with polar liquids is placed upon the resonator. Experiments at the microwave frequencies verify that the amplifier chip could greatly compensate the loss introduced by the polar liquids under investigation, resulting in an ultra-high-Q sensor for the detection of polar liquids.

Spoof Plasmonics: From Metamaterial Concept to Topological Description

Advances in metamaterials have offered the opportunity of engineering electromagnetic properties beyond the limits of natural materials. A typical example is "spoof" surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which mimic features of SPPs without penetrating into metal, but only with periodic corrugations on metal surfaces. They hold considerable promise in device applications from microwaves to the far infrared, where real SPP modes do not exist. The original spoof SPP concept is derived from the description of corrugated surfaces by a metamaterial that hosts an effective plasma frequency. Later, studies have attempted to describe spoof SPP modes with the band structure by strictly solving Maxwell's equations, which can possess band gaps from polaritonic anticrossing principle or Bragg interference. More recently, as inspired by the development of topological framework in condensed matter physics, the topological description of spoof SPPs is used to propose topologically protected waveguiding phenomena. Here, the developments of spoof SPPs from both practical and fundamental perspectives are reviewed.

Tunable multiband directional electromagnetic scattering from spoof Mie resonant structure

We demonstrate that directional electromagnetic scattering can be realized in an artificial Mie resonant structure that supports electric and magnetic dipole modes simultaneously. The directivity of the far-field radiation pattern can be switched by changing wavelength of the incident light as well as tailoring the geometric parameters of the structure. In addition, we further design a quasiperiodic spoof Mie resonant structure by alternately inserting two materials into the slits. The results show that multi-band directional light scattering is realized by exciting multiple electric and magnetic dipole modes with different frequencies in the quasiperiodic structure. The presented design concept is suitable for microwave to terahertz region and can be applied to various advanced optical devices, such as antenna, metamaterial and metasurface.

Physical mechanism of order between electric and magnetic dipoles in spoof plasmonic structures

It has been recently shown that a solid-textured metal cylinder can support electric and magnetic dipolar resonances simultaneously [Phys. Rev. X4, 021003 (2014)PRXHAE2160-330810.1103/PhysRevX.4.021003] which are almost degenerate in a two-dimensional (2-D) structure and non-degenerate in a three-dimensional (3-D) structure, and with the magnetic dipole appearing at higher frequency. They are described as spoof localized plasmonic modes analogous to localized plasmonic resonances in optical frequencies. Here, we consider a hollow metal cylinder corrugated by periodic cut-through slits. Our results indicate that the magnetic dipole can be separated from the electric dipole in a 2-D structure, and magnetic dipolar resonance appears at lower frequency, rather than electric resonance in both 2-D and 3-D structures. In order to clarify the physical mechanism behind the abnormal phenomenon, we study the influence of the core material on the electric- and magnetic-dipole modes based on theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. It is discovered that there is a threshold of an imaginary part of permittivity for switching the order between electric and magnetic dipoles. These results may provide fundamental understanding and physical insight for spoof plasmonic modes supported in designer structures.

Trapped spoof surface plasmons with structured defects in textured closed surfaces

We demonstrate that a defect unit in periodic textured closed surfaces is able to trap spoof surface plasmons (SPs) into a deep subwavelength scale. The resonant frequency of a trapped spoof SP can be tuned freely by properly tailoring the dimension of the defect unit. By introducing multiple defect units with different dimensions at different positions of the textured closed surfaces, the spoof SPs with different frequencies trapped effectively at desired places are also demonstrated. In addition, we further design a graded defect structure with continuously variable dimensions to trap the spoof SPs over an ultrawide spectral band. The interval between the trapped waves on the closed surfaces can be tuned conveniently by changing the grade of the defect dimensions. The designer structures may indicate potential applications in the optical switch and storage in the microwave and terahertz frequencies.
