Radiative loss control of an embedded silicon perfect absorber in the visible region

Polarization characteristics and transverse spin of Mie scattering

Complicated polarization states in the near field of Mie scattering have aroused wide interest due to their broad potential applications. In this work, we investigated polarization properties, including polarization dimension, degree of nonregularity, and transverse electric-field spin, of scattering of a partially polarized plane wave by a dielectric nanosphere based on the rigorous Mie scattering theory. It is shown that with the decrease of the correlation coefficient, the polarization dimension and degree of nonregularity generally increase. In the limit of unpolarized incident light, a nearly-perfect nonregular polarization state (PN = 0.928) appears in the near field and the spin is transverse to the radial direction everywhere. The rich structure contained by the partially polarized scattered light offers an approach to manipulating the interaction between light and nanoparticles, which may lead to novel designs of nanoantenna, optical trap and sensing.

Tunable ultraviolet polarized light switch based on all-dielectric metasurfaces on a stretchable substrate

Most ultraviolet (UV) passive optics are currently non-tunable and lack external modulation methods because of the poor tunability of wide-bandgap semiconductor materials in UV working media. This study investigates the excitation of magnetic dipole resonances in the solar-blind UV region by hafnium oxide metasurfaces using elastic dielectric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The near-field interactions between the resonant dielectric elements can be modulated by the mechanical strain of the PDMS substrate, which can flatten the structure's resonant peak beyond the solar-blind UV wavelength range, thereby turning on or off the optical switch in the solar-blind UV region. The device has a facile design and can be used in various applications, such as UV polarization modulation, optical communications, and spectroscopy.

Graphene perfect absorber based on degenerate critical coupling of toroidal mode

Graphene is a two-dimensional material with great potential for photodetection and light modulation applications owing to its high charge mobility. However, the light absorption of graphene in the near-infrared range is only 2.3%, limiting the sensitivity of graphene-based devices. In this study, we propose a graphene perfect absorber based on degenerate critical coupling comprising monolayer graphene and a hollow silicon Mie resonator array. In particular, monolayer graphene achieves perfect absorption by controlling the periods and holes of the Mie resonators. The proposed graphene perfect absorber can significantly improve the sensitivity of graphene-based devices.

All-dielectric perfect absorber based on quadrupole modes

In principle, the absorbance of a free-standing ultra-thin film is limited to 50%. To overcome this limitation, an all-dielectric perfect absorber is proposed herein based on the concept of degenerate critical coupling (DCC) of quadrupole modes. We study the absorbance of a dielectric elliptic cylinder and find that perfect absorption can be achieved by spectrally overlapping peaks of electric and magnetic quadrupole modes. This suggests that the DCC method can be extended to the quadrupole modes beyond dipole modes. Such an all-dielectric perfect absorber can be used in photodetectors, optical filters, and optical modulators mediated by the photothermal effect.
