Influence of the photon orbital angular momentum on electric dipole transitions: negative experimental evidence

Terahertz Vortex Beam as a Spectroscopic Probe of Magnetic Excitations

Circularly polarized light with spin angular momentum is one of the most valuable probes of magnetism. We demonstrate that light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM), or vortex beams, can also couple to magnetism exhibiting dichroisms in a magnetized medium. Resonant optical absorption in a ferrimagnetic crystal depends strongly on both the handedness of the vortex and the direction of the beam propagation with respect to the sample magnetization. This effect exceeds the conventional dichroism for circularly polarized light. Our results demonstrate the high potential of the vortex beams with OAM as a new spectroscopic probe of magnetism in matter.

Probing Molecular Chirality by Orbital-Angular-Momentum-Carrying X-ray Pulses

A twisted X-ray beam with orbital angular momentum is employed in a theoretical study to probe molecular chirality. A nonlocal response description of the matter-field coupling is adopted to account for the field short wavelength and the structured spatial profile. We use the minimal-coupling Hamiltonian, which implicitly takes into account the multipole contributions to all orders. The combined interactions of the spin and orbital angular momentum of the X-ray beam give rise to circular-helical dichroism signals, which are stronger than ordinary circular dichroism signals, and may serve as a useful tool for the study of molecular chirality in the X-ray regime.

Hartmann wavefront sensor characterization of a high charge vortex beam in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range

We demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the ability of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) Hartmann wavefront sensors to characterize high charge vortex beams produced by high-order harmonic generation up to the order of 25. We also show that phase matched absorption limited high harmonic generation is able to maintain the high charge vortex structure of the XUV beam even in a rather long (1 cm) generation medium.

Interpreting angular momentum transfer between electromagnetic multipoles using vector spherical harmonics

The transfer of angular momentum between a quadrupole emitter and a dipole acceptor is investigated theoretically. Vector spherical harmonics are used to describe the angular part of the field of the mediating photon. Analytical results are presented for predicting angular momentum transfer between the emitter and absorber within a quantum electrodynamical framework. We interpret the allowability of such a process, which appears to violate conservation of angular momentum, in terms of the breakdown of the isotropy of space at the point of photon absorption (detection). That is, collapse of the wavefunction results in loss of all angular momentum information. This is consistent with Noether's Theorem and demystifies some common misconceptions about the nature of the photon. The results have implications for interpreting the detection of photons from multipole sources and offers insight into limits on information that can be extracted from quantum measurements in photonic systems.
