Raman scattering enhancement of a single ZnO nanorod decorated with Ag nanoparticles: synergies of defects and plasmons

ZnO and Ag NP-decorated ZnO nanoflowers: green synthesis using Ganoderma lucidum aqueous extract and characterization

Fungi produce and excrete various proteins, enzymes, polysaccharides, and secondary metabolites, which may be used as media for the "green" synthesis of metal and semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs). ZnO NPs with a flower-like morphology were synthesized by an affordable colloidal route, using an aqueous extract of Ganoderma lucidum as a reducing agent and stabilizer. Each individual "flower" has a large effective surface, which is preserved when the particles are close packed into a dense film, which is advantageous for numerous applications. The phonon Raman spectrum and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern prove the high crystallinity of the NPs, with the distinct pattern of a hexagonal (wurtzite) lattice, negligible residual stress, and a crystallite size of 12-14 nm determined from the XRD. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the as-synthesized ZnO NPs contains a structured defect-related feature in the violet-blue range, while the green PL, common for nanostructures synthesized by "green" routes, is very weak. By applying dimethylsulfoxide as an additional passivating agent, the excitonic (UV) PL band was activated without enhancement of the defect-related features. Ag NP-decorated ZnO flowers were synthesized by subsequent silver reduction by pepper extract. The ZnO/Ag NPs exhibited efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of a standard dye analyte, rhodamine 6G, ensuring the feasibility of other applications that require close contact of ZnO/Ag to other nanostructures or molecules to realize the energy of the charge transfer.

Light-Induced Selective Hydrogenation over PdAg Nanocages in Hollow MOF Microenvironment

Selective hydrogenation with high efficiency under ambient conditions remains a long-standing challenge. Here, a yolk-shell nanostructured catalyst, PdAg@ZIF-8, featuring plasmonic PdAg nanocages encompassed by a metal-organic framework (MOF, namely, ZIF-8) shell, has been rationally fabricated. PdAg@ZIF-8 achieves selective (97.5%) hydrogenation of nitrostyrene to vinylaniline with complete conversion at ambient temperature under visible light irradiation. The photothermal effect of Ag, together with the substrate enrichment effect of the catalyst, improves the Pd activity. The near-field enhancement effect from plasmonic Ag and optimized Pd electronic state by Ag alloying promote selective adsorption of the -NO₂ group and therefore catalytic selectivity. Remarkably, the unique yolk-shell nanostructure not only facilitates access to PdAg cores and protects them from aggregation but also benefits substrate enrichment and preferential -NO₂ adsorption under light irradiation, the latter two of which surpass the core-shell counterpart, giving rise to enhanced activity, selectivity, and recyclability.

Plasmonic enhanced piezoelectric photoresponse with flexible PVDF@Ag-ZnO/Au composite nanofiber membranes

The coordination of piezoelectric and plasmonic effects to regulate the separation and migration of photo-generated carriers is still a significant method to improve the performance of visible-light photoresponse. Herein, we propose the PVDF@Ag-ZnO/Au composite nanofiber membranes utilizing the piezoelectric and plasmonic effects to promote the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. Here, ZnO nanorods can generate a built-in electric field under vibration to separate electron-hole pairs. The Schottky junction formed by noble metal/semiconductor can not only inhibit the recombination of photo-generated carriers and accelerate the migration of carriers, but also enhance the utilization of visible light. In addition, the structure has excellent flexibility and easy recycling characteristics. We demonstrate that the plasmonic effect of noble metal can enhance the light response of membranes and broaden light absorption from ultraviolet to visible light region. With the help of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), modulation effects of the piezoelectric effect on light response is proved. For catalytic processes, rhodamine B (98.8%) can be almost completely degraded using PVDF@Ag-ZnO/Au within 120 minutes in the piezoelectric photocatalysis process, which is 2.2 and 2.8 times higher than photocatalysis and piezoelectric catalysis, respectively. This work provides a promising strategy for harnessing solar and mechanical energy.

Progress on two-dimensional binary oxide materials

Two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials have attracted much attention because of their unique electronic and optical properties. Since the successful isolation of graphene in 2004, many interesting 2D materials have emerged, including elemental olefins (silicene, germanene, etc.), transition metal chalcogenides, transition metal carbides (nitrides), hexagonal boron, etc. On the other hand, 2D binary oxide materials are an important group in the 2D family owing to their high structural diversity, low cost, high stability, and strong adjustability. This review systematically summarizes the research progress on 2D binary oxide materials. We discuss their composition and structure in terms of vdW and non-vdW categories in detail, followed by a discussion of their synthesis methods. In particular, we focus on strategies to tailor the properties of 2D oxides and their emerging applications in different fields. Finally, the challenges and future developments of 2D binary oxides are provided.

Zinc Oxide Nanorod Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates without and with Gold Nanoparticles Fabricated through Pulsed-Laser-Induced Photolysis

We fabricated surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates using gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-decorated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs). Prior to decoration with AuNPs, ZnO NRs on the glass substrate fabricated using the sol–gel method could enhance the SERS signal for detecting 10−5 M rhodamine 6G (R6G). Microscopic analysis revealed that the thermal-annealing process for fabricating the seed layers of ZnO facilitated the growth of ZnO NRs with the highly preferred c-axis (002) orientation. A decrease in the diameter of ZnO NRs occurred because of the use of annealed seek layers further increased the surface-to-volume ratio of ZnO NRs, resulting in an increase in the SERS signal for R6G of 10−5 M. To combine the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode with the charge transfer (CT) mode, ZnO NRs were decorated with AuNPs through pulsed-laser-induced photolysis (PLIP). However, the preferred vertical (002) orientation of ZnO NRs was prone to the aggregation of AuNPs, which hindered the SERS signal. The experimental results revealed that ZnO NRs with the crystalline structure of horizontal (100) and (101) orientations facilitated the growth of homogeneous, independent and isolated AuNPs which serves as “hot spots” for SERS signal of detecting R6G at a low concentration of 10−9 M. Comparing to previous fabrication of SERS substrate, our method has advantage to fabricate AuNP-decorated ZnO NR in a short time. Moreover, the optimization of the SERS behaviors for different fabrication conditions of AuNPs using the PLIP method was investigated in detail.

Acoustofluidics-Assisted Engineering of Multifunctional Three-Dimensional Zinc Oxide Nanoarrays

The integration of acoustics and microfluidics (termed acoustofluidics) presents a frontier in the engineering of functional micro-/nanomaterials. Acoustofluidic techniques enable active and precise spatiotemporal control of matter, providing great potential for the design of advanced nanosystems with tunable material properties. In this work, we introduce an acoustofluidic approach for engineering multifunctional three-dimensional nanostructure arrays and demonstrate their potential in enrichment and biosensing applications. In particular, our acoustofluidic device integrates an acoustic transducer with a sharp-edge-based acoustofluidic reactor that enables uniform patterning of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoarrays with customizable lengths, densities, diameters, and other properties. The resulting ZnO nanoarray-coated glass capillaries can rapidly and efficiently capture and enrich biomolecules with sizes ranging from a few nanometers to several hundred nanometers. In order to enable the detection of these biomolecules, silver (Ag) nanoparticles are deposited onto the ZnO nanoarrays, and the integrated ZnO-Ag capillary device functions as a label-free plasmonic biosensing system for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based detection of exosomes, DNA oligonucleotides, and E. coli bacteria. The optical sensing enhancement of ZnO-Ag capillary is further validated through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. These findings not only provide insights into the engineering of functional micro/nanomaterials using acoustofluidics but also shed light onto the development of portable microanalytical devices for point-of-care applications.

A green and general strategy for the synthesis of hollow Ag/CdS nanocomposites for superior SERS performance

In this study, we developed a convenient, environmentally friendly approach for the fabrication of hollow Ag/CdS composites, which presented superior SERS performance.
