Three-dimensional optical multiple trapping using pure amplitude octagonal almost periodic structures

We demonstrate a novel method for three-dimensional optical multiple trapping using pure amplitude octagonal almost periodic structures (PAOAPSs). We use a Gaussian beam to diffract through these structures and create a three-dimensional array of trapping spots with the aid of an objective lens. Our device is simple, cost-effective, and easy to fabricate, and it has several advantages over conventional methods for trapping multiple particles. By adjusting the rotation of the PAOAPS and the polarization of the beam, we can simultaneously rotate the trapped particles in both axial and orbital directions. We show that our device achieves an ∼19-fold increase in trapping efficiency compared to a recently introduced method based on an amplitude radial grating. Furthermore, our device transfers about 1/70 of the transmitted beam power to each optical trap, which is much more efficient than a spatial light modulator (SLM).

Unidirectional light emission in a deformed circular-side triangular microresonator

A waveguide-connected deformed circular-side triangular microresonator is proposed and fabricated. Room temperature unidirectional light emission is experimentally demonstrated in the far-field pattern with a divergence angle of 38°. Single mode lasing at 1545.4 nm is realized at an injection current of 12 mA. The emission pattern changes drastically upon the binding of a nanoparticle with radius down to several nanometers, predicting applications in electrically pumped, cost-effective, portable and highly sensitive far-field detection of nanoparticles.

Optically Controlled Development of a Waveguide from a Reservoir of Microparticles

Light can be guided without diffraction in prefabricated structures: optical fibers and waveguides or in actively created spatial solitons in optically nonlinear media. Here, an approach in which a self-stabilized optical waveguide develops from a reservoir of building blocks-spherical polymer microparticles (MPs)-and is pushed through an optically passive medium-water-is presented. The optical waveguide, formed by a chain of these microparticles and one microsphere wide, is self-stabilized and propelled by the guided light, while its geometrical and dynamical properties depend on the diameter-to-wavelength ratio. The smallest investigated particles, 500 nm in diameter, form single-mode waveguides up to tens of micrometers long, with the length limited only by optical losses. In contrast, waveguides constructed of larger MPs, 1 and 2.5 µm in diameter, are limited in length to only a few particles due to interference of different modes and beating of light intensity.

Single-mode lasing in an AlGaInAs/InP dual-port square microresonator

Mode selection is crucial to achieving stable single-mode lasing in microlasers. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a dual-port square microresonator for single-mode lasing with a side-mode-suppression ratio (SMSR) exceeding 40 dB. By connecting waveguides at two opposite vertices, the quality factor for the antisymmetric mode (ASM) is much higher than that of the symmetric mode (SM), enabling single-mode lasing. Furthermore, far-field interference patterns similar to Young's two-slit interference are observed. This microlaser is capable of providing two optical sources simultaneously for optical signal processing in high-density integrated photonic circuits.
