Determination of geometry-induced positional distortion of ultrafast laser-inscribed circuits in a cylindrical optical fiber

Femtosecond laser writing of robust waveguides in optical fibers with enhanced photosensitivity

We report the femtosecond laser writing of meter-long optical waveguides inscribed through the coating of specifically designed optical fibers. In order to improve the material photosensitivity and to ensure non-guiding optical fibers for subsequent laser processing of the waveguiding core, a depressed refractive index core design is implemented by co-doping a large portion of the optical fiber with germanium oxide and fluorine. The enhanced photosensitivity provided by further deuterium loading these fibers allows laser-writing of large refractive index contrast waveguides over wide cross sections. To mitigate the formation of photoinduced color centers causing high propagation losses in the photo-written waveguides, thermal annealing up to 400°C is performed on polyimide-coated laser-written fibers. Although the refractive index contrast decreases, the propagation losses are drastically reduced down to 0.08 dB/cm at 900nm allowing a robust single-mode guiding from visible to near infrared. Our results pave the way towards the development of a new generation of optical fibers and photonic components with arbitrarily complex designs.

Highly Efficient Refractive Index Sensor Based on a Dual-Side Polished SMS Fiber Enabled by Femtosecond Laser Writing

Fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensors based on wavelength-shift-based interrogation continue to present a challenge in achieving high sensitivity for a wide detection range. In this paper, we propose a sensor for determining the RI of liquids based on femtosecond laser (fs-laser) writing of a dual-side polished singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) fiber. The proposed sensor can determine the RI value of a surrounding liquid by detecting the dip wavelength in the transmission spectrum of the light propagating through the sensing area. The high RI sensitivity is attributed to the increased interaction area established by the fs-laser, which creates hydrophilic surfaces and maintains the wide detection range of the SMS structure. The results of the wavelength-shift-based interrogation reveal that the fabricated device exhibited a high sensitivity of 161.40 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) over a wide RI detection range of 0.062 RIU. The proposed device has high processing accuracy and a simple manufacturing process. Hence, it has the potential to be used as a lab-on-fiber sensing platform in chemical and biotechnological applications.

Ultrafast laser writing of arbitrary long low-loss waveguides in optical fibers

We propose an innovative femtosecond laser writing approach, based on a reel-to-reel configuration, allowing the fabrication of arbitrary long optical waveguides in coreless optical fibers directly through the coating. We report few meters long waveguides operating in the near-infrared (near-IR) with propagation losses as low as 0.055 ± 0.004 dB/cm at 700 nm. The refractive index distribution is shown to be homogeneous with a quasi-circular cross section, its contrast being controllable via the writing velocity. Our work paves the way for the direct fabrication of complex arrangements of cores in standard and exotic optical fibers.

Mode converter with C+L band coverage based on the femtosecond laser inscribed long period fiber grating

The mode converter (MC) is one of the key components for mode division multiplexing (MDM). Here, we experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber long period grating (LPG) based MC inscribed in the few-mode fiber (FMF) with the line-by-line femtosecond laser irradiation technique. Experimental characterization results agree well with the theoretical calculations, and a clear mode evolution from the LP₀₁ mode to the LP₁₁ mode is observed with the tuning of the operation wavelength. An average mode conversion efficiency of more than 90% and an average insertion loss of less than 5 dB, together with a polarization-dependent loss of less than 3 dB, are achieved over the C+L band with a good repeatability. The proposed MC based on the LPG inscribed into the FMF has the advantages of mode scalability, compact size, and wideband operation, which is desired for the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and MDM hybrid transmission.

Fiber-interface directional coupler inscribed by femtosecond laser for refractive index measurements

A novel fiber-interface directional waveguide coupler was inscribed on the surface of a coreless fiber by femtosecond laser, and was successfully applied to highly sensitive refractive index (RI) measurements. The primary arm was first inscribed to couple light from a lead-in single mode fiber to the fiber interface, then back to a lead-out single mode fiber. A side arm was inscribed parallel and in close proximity to the primary arm. Light propagating in the primary arm could then be efficiently coupled into the side arm when a phase-matching condition was met, which produced a dramatic spectral dip at the coupling wavelength. The proposed device achieved a sensitivity as high as ∼8249 nm/RIU over an RI range of 1.44-1.45, due to strong evanescent fields excited in fiber-interface waveguides. The proposed in-fiber directional coupler exhibits high mechanical strength, a compact configuration, and excellent RI sensitivity. As such, it has significant potential for practical applications in biochemical sensing.

Fiber Reshaping-Based Refractive Index Sensor Interrogated through Both Intensity and Wavelength Detection

A fiber reshaping-based refractive index (RI) sensor is proposed relying on both optical intensity variation and wavelength shift. The objective of this study is to completely reshape the core and to ultimately mimic a coreless fiber, thereby creating a highly efficient multimode interference (MMI) coupler. Thus, propagation modes are permitted to leak out into the cladding and eventually escape out of the fiber, depending on the surrounding environment. Two interrogation mechanisms based on both the intensity variation and wavelength shift are employed to investigate the performance of the RI sensor, with the assistance of leaky-mode and MMI theories. By monitoring the output intensity difference and the wavelength shift, the proposed RI sensor exhibits high average sensitivities of 185 dB/RIU and 3912 nm/RIU in a broad range from 1.339 to 1.443, respectively. The operating range and sensitivity can be adjusted by controlling the interaction length, which is appealing for a wide range of applications in industry and bioscience research.
