Control of the total orbital angular momentum of light beams propagating through a turbulent medium

The robustness of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light beams propagating in a turbulent medium, e.g., atmosphere, is critical for many applications such as OAM-based free-space optical communications and remote sensing. However, the total OAM of a beam interacting with the turbulent medium inevitably changes. Here, we demonstrate a practical algorithm to control the total OAM of a beam transmitted through a time-evolving, turbulent medium by dynamically modulating the weights of two coherently superimposed OAM modes, which served as the input beam. A cross-OAM matrix is introduced, and applied for checking whether the desired total OAM in the output plane can be achieved. Furthermore, analytical relations between the weights of two input modes and the output total OAM, as well as its modulation range, are established. As a numerical example, we study the behavior of total OAM of the two-mode beam after passing through a thermal convection occurring in an aqueous medium and suggest a possible application of our strategy.

Angular momentum of vector-twisted-vortex Gaussian Schell-model beams

In this paper, we generalize a recently introduced class of partially coherent vortex beams known as twisted-vortex Gaussian Schell-model beams. Through the addition of spatially varying polarization, we created a beam whose angular momentum comes from three different sources: the underlying vortex order of the beam, the twist given to the random ensemble of beams, and the circular polarization of the beam. The combination of these angular momentum types allows for unprecedented control over the total angular momentum of the field and its transverse distribution.

Fast calculation of orbital angular momentum flux density of partially coherent Schell-model beams on propagation

Optical coherence has recently become a degree of freedom to modulate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) flux density of a partially coherent beam during propagation. However, the calculation of the OAM flux density for the partially coherent beam involves partial differential and four-dimensional integral operations, which poses drawbacks for its fast numerical calculations. In this paper, we present an efficient numerical protocol for calculating the OAM flux density of any partially coherent Schell-model beam propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system by only adopting two-dimensional (2D) Fourier transforms. The general formalism is established in detail for the fast numerical calculation of the OAM flux density. It is found that the operation number in the developed algorithm is independent on the spatial coherence states of the beam. To demonstrate the validity of our algorithm, we calculate the OAM flux density of the partially coherent Laguerre-Gaussian beams during propagation with both the analytical and numerical methods. The obtained results are consistent well with each other. Moreover, the OAM flux density properties of two other classes of Schell-model beams, having no analytical solutions, are investigated as the specific examples. Our method provides a convenient way for studying the correlation-induced OAM density changes for any Schell-model beam propagation through a paraxial optical system.

Experimental generation of the polycyclic tornado circular swallowtail beam with self-healing and auto-focusing

In this paper, the polycyclic tornado circular swallowtail beam (PTCSB) with autofocusing and self-healing properties is generated numerically and experimentally and their properties are investigated. Compared with the circular swallowtail beam (CSB), the optical distribution of the PTCSB presents a tornado pattern during the propagation. The number of spiral stripes, as well as the orientation of the rotation, can be adjusted by the number and the sign of the topological charge. The Poynting vectors and the orbital angular momentum are employed to investigate the physical mechanism of beam-rotating. In addition, we also introduce a sector-shaped opaque obstacle to investigate the self-healing property of the PTCSB, passing through it with different center angles and discuss the influence of the scaling factor along the propagation direction. Our results may expand the potential applications in the optical spanner and material processing.

Angular momentum of the vortex ultrashort pulsed beam with a smaller beam waist

The angular momentum (AM) of light has important implications for many fields of optics research, such as optics communication, quantum information and laser-scan microscopy. Thus, in this paper, we intend to investigate the average AM of the vortex ultrashort pulsed beam (VUPB), which is generated and widely applied in the field of high-intensity and ultrafast regimes. According to the vector potential, we firstly derive the electromagnetic field of the VUPB, then analyze the spatial intensity, the phase profile and the polarization state of the beam. We explore that the total AM per photon of VUPB is not n ℏ value when the beam waist w₀ is of wavelength or sub-wavelength order, since the polarization of VUPB is changed from linear to circular polarization with the decrease of beam waist, which introduces the conversion of the orbital AM to the spin AM. Moreover, based on the conservation of the total AM, the minimum waist of VUPB can be obtained, which is dependent on the pulse duration time α and topological charge n. Finally, the average AM of the fractional VUPB expressed by the superposition of the integer VUPB with different weights, is analyzed, which is not equal to the AM of fractional CW beam μ - sin (2μπ)/2π (μ is the fractional topological charge), but is associated with the beam waist w₀ and α. Therefore, we think that the AM of VUPB can be controlled by adjusting the α and w₀.

A New Type of Shape-Invariant Beams with Structured Coherence: Laguerre-Christoffel-Darboux Beams

A new class of sources presenting structured coherence properties is introduced and analyzed. They are obtained as the incoherent superposition of coherent Laguerre-Gaussian modes with suitable coefficients. This ensures that the shape of the intensity profile and the spatial coherence features of the propagated beams are invariant during paraxial approximation. A simple analytical expression is obtained for the cross-spectral density of the sources of this class, regardless of the number of superposed modes. Properties of these sources are analyzed and described by several examples.

Statistical properties of a partially coherent radially polarized vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal

Free-space propagation and experimental generation of a partially coherent radially polarized (PCRP) vortex beam were studied recently [Opt. Express24, 13714 (2016)OPEXFF1094-408710.1364/OE.24.013714]. In this work, we explore the statistical properties of such a PCRP vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal. We show that the anisotropy of the refractive index of the uniaxial crystal induces the asymmetrical distribution of the intensity, the degree and the state of polarization, as well as the degree of coherence of the beam during propagation. Further, by comparing the asymmetrical distribution of the statistical properties of the PRCP vortex beam with those of a PRCP beam without a vortex phase, we find that the asymmetrical features can be used for determining whether a PCRP beam carries the vortex phase. Further, we show that from the far-field distribution of the degree of coherence, we could quantify the topological charge and distinguish the handedness of the vortex phase. Our findings provide a novel approach for measuring the phase information of the partially coherent vortex beams.
