Holographic femtosecond laser integration of microtube arrays inside a hollow needle as a lab-in-a-needle device

Fabrication of hollow microtube arrays based on a femtosecond laser double-pulse multiphoton polymerization

Microtubes with widely varied dimensions and materials have great prospects in functional devices applied in microoptics, microrobot, and biomedicine. However, the fabrication of vertically protruding hollow microtubes with high diameter-to-thickness ratio is challenging and few reported. Femtosecond laser two-photon polymerization can solve this problem via point-by-point scanning or SLM-based parallel processing, but the low efficiency limits its high throughput fabrication. Here, we report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, femtosecond laser double-pulse multiphoton polymerization approach for high efficiency fabrication of hollow microtube arrays. We established a two-aperture laser beam reshaping system to generate a circular beam via two rounds of Fresnel diffraction. Based on the unique laser energy distribution, hollow microtubes with high diameter-to-thickness ratio can be generated by two successively laser pulses exposure, which can improve the fabrication efficiency significantly. With the optimized parameters, we can achieve repeatable and uniform microtube array fabrication in large scale, and the yield can be 94.9%. Defocus testing showed that the proposed approach has a high range of focusing tolerance. The proposed microtube fabrication approach is meaningful in providing some enlightenment for researchers in the field of microfabrication.

Magnetically driven rotary microfilter fabricated by two-photon polymerization for multimode filtering of particles

In this Letter, a magnetically driven rotary microfilter that enables switching the modes of filtering and passing is fabricated in microfluidic devices via two-photon polymerization using a femtosecond laser for selective filtering of particles. The high-quality integration of a microfilter is ensured by accurately formulating the magnetic photoresist and optimizing the processing parameters. By changing the direction of the external magnetic field, the fabricated microfilter can be remotely manipulated to rotate by desired angles, thereby achieving the "filtering" or "passing" mode on demand. Taking advantage of this property, the magnetically rotary microfilter realizes multi-mode filtering functions such as capturing 8 µm particles/passing the 2.5 µm particles and passing both particles. More importantly, the responsive characteristic increases the reusability of the microchip. The lab-on-chip devices integrated with remotely rotary microfilters by the femtosecond laser two-photon polymerization with the functional photoresist will offer extensive applications in chemical and biological studies.

Simultaneous Measurement of Temperature and Refractive Index Using High Temperature Resistant Pure Quartz Grating Based on Femtosecond Laser and HF Etching

The optical fiber temperature and refractive index sensor combined with the hollow needle structure for medical treatment can promote the standardization of traditional acupuncture techniques and improve the accuracy of body fluid analysis. A double-parameter sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is developed in this paper. The sensor materials are selected through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the sensor sensing principle is theoretically analyzed and simulated. Through femtosecond laser writing pure silica fiber, a high temperature resistant wavelength type FBG temperature sensor is obtained, and the FBG is corroded by hydrofluoric acid (HF) to realize a high-sensitivity intensity-type refractive index sensor. Because the light has dual characteristics of energy and wavelength, the sensor can realize simultaneous dual-parameter sensing. The light from the lead-in optical fiber is transmitted to the sensor and affected by temperature and refractive-index; then, the reflection peak is reflected back to the lead-out fiber by the FBG. The high temperature response and the refractive index response of the sensor were measured in the laboratory, and the high temperature characteristics of the sensor were verified in the accredited institute. It is demonstrated that the proposed sensor can achieve temperature sensing up to 1150 °C with the sensitivity of 0.0134 nm/°C, and refractive sensing over a refractive range of 1.333 to 1.4027 with the sensitivity of -49.044 dBm/RIU. The sensor features the advantages of two-parameter measurement, compact structure, and wide temperature range, and it exhibits great potential in acupuncture treatment.

Photopolymerization with high-order Bessel light beams

We study photopolymerization with high-order Bessel light beams with phase singularities on-axis. Self-trapping and self-focusing of propagation-invariant light beams in a photopolymer allow the fabrication of extended helical microfibers with a length scale of a centimeter, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than the propagation distance of the Bessel light beams. We show the evolution of microfibers rotating at a rate proportional to the incident optical power, while the periodicity of the helical structures remains constant, irrespective of the laser power. This suggests that optical momentum transfer plays a predominant role in the growth and rotation of such fiber structures.

Long focusing range and self-healing Bessel vortex beam generator

Here a continuous axial-spiral phase microplate (CAsPP), based on combining a logarithmic axicon and a spiral phase plate, was proposed for generating high-quality higher-order Bessel vortex beams. The novel optical component implemented via femtosecond laser direct writing possesses compact geometry and unique optical properties. The CAsPP with a diameter of 80 µm possesses a controllable long focus ranging from 50 to 600 µm and exhibits a good self-healing ability after free transmission of about 45 µm. Unique optical properties were demonstrated in both experiments and simulations, which were well matched to each other. This Letter provides new opportunities for applications in integrated optics, optical trapping, laser machining, and information reconstruction.
