Multipole-mode solitons in Bessel optical lattices

Fundamental and multipole solitons in amplitude-modulated Fibonacci lattices

We investigated the existence and stability of fundamental and multipole solitons supported by amplitude-modulated Fibonacci lattices with self-focusing nonlinearity. Owing to the quasi-periodicity of Fibonacci lattices, families of solitons localized in different waveguides have different properties. We found that the existence domain of fundamental solitons localized in the central lattice is larger than that of solitons localized in the adjacent central waveguide. The former counterparts are completely stable in their existence region, while the latter have a narrow unstable region near the lower cut-off. Two families of dipole solitons were also comprehensively studied. We found the outer lattice distribution can significantly change the existence region of solitons. In addition, we specifically analyzed the properties of four complicated multipole solitons with pole numbers 3, 5, 7, and 9. In the Fibonacci lattice, their field moduli of multipole solitons are all asymmetrically distributed. The linear-stability analysis and direct simulations reveal that as the number of poles of the multipole soliton increases, its stable domain is compressed. Our results provide helpful insight for understanding the dynamics of nonlinear localized multipole modes in Fibonacci lattices with an optical nonlinearity.

Controlled soliton formation in tailored Bessel photonic lattices

Azimuthally modulated higher order rotationally symmetric Bessel-like optical patterns were generated by coherent superposition of two co-propagating Bessel beams - either in or out of phase. By changing the distance between the beam centers, a whole variety of transition states can be realized. As one prominent example, a 4-fold symmetry quadrupole-like photonic structure was optically inducted in an SBN crystal and nonlinear beam propagation in such a photonic wave-guiding structure is investigated in both self-focusing and self-defocusing regimes. The proposed device serves as an all-optical 2d 1 × 4 photonic interconnect.

Optical lattice-like cladding waveguides by direct laser writing: fabrication, luminescence, and lasing

We report on the fabrication of optical lattice-like waveguide structures in an Nd:YAP laser crystal by using direct femtosecond laser writing. With periodically arrayed laser-induced tracks, the waveguiding cores can be located in either the regions between the neighbored tracks or the central zone surrounded by a number of tracks as outer cladding. The polarization of the femtosecond laser pulses for the inscription has been found to play a critical role in the anisotropic guiding behaviors of the structures. The confocal photoluminescence investigations reveal different stress-induced modifications of the structures inscribed by different polarization of the femtosecond laser beam, which are considered to be responsible for the refractive index changes of the structures. Under optical pump at 808 nm, efficient waveguide lasing at ∼1  μm wavelength has been realized from the optical lattice-like structure, which exhibits potential applications as novel miniature light sources.

Localized modes in dissipative lattice media: an overview

We give an overview of recent theoretical studies of the dynamics of one- and two-dimensional spatial dissipative solitons in models based on the complex Ginzburg-Landau equations with the cubic-quintic combination of loss and gain terms, which include imaginary, real or complex spatially periodic potentials. The imaginary potential represents periodic modulation of the local loss and gain. It is shown that the effective gradient force, induced by the inhomogeneous loss distribution, gives rise to three generic propagation scenarios for one-dimensional dissipative solitons: transverse drift, persistent swing motion, and damped oscillations. When the lattice-average loss/gain value is zero, and the real potential has spatial parity opposite to that of the imaginary component, the respective complex potential is a realization of the parity-time symmetry. Under the action of lattice potentials of the latter type, one-dimensional solitons feature motion regimes in the form of the transverse drift and persistent swing. In the two-dimensional geometry, three types of axisymmetric radial lattices are considered, namely those based solely on the refractive-index modulation, or solely on the linear-loss modulation, or on a combination of both. The rotary motion of solitons in such axisymmetric potentials can be effectively controlled by varying the strength of the initial tangential kick.

Generation of polygonal soliton clusters and fundamental solitons in dissipative systems by necklace-ring beams with radial-azimuthal phase modulation

We demonstrate that, in a two-dimensional dissipative medium described by the cubic-quintic (CQ) complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation with the viscous (spectral-filtering) term, necklace rings carrying a mixed radial-azimuthal phase modulation can evolve into polygonal or quasipolygonal stable soliton clusters, and into stable fundamental solitons. The outcome of the evolution is controlled by the depth and azimuthal anharmonicity of the phase-modulation profile, or by the radius and number of "beads" in the initial necklace ring. Threshold characteristics of the evolution of the patterns are identified and explained. Parameter regions for the formation of the stable polygonal and quasipolygonal soliton clusters, and of stable fundamental solitons, are identified. The model with the CQ terms replaced by the full saturable nonlinearity produces essentially the same set of basic dynamical scenarios; hence this set is a universal one for the CGL models.

Broken ring solitons in Bessel optical lattices

We address the existence of ring solitons broken by several nodes in a defocusing saturable nonlinear medium with an imprinted Bessel optical lattice. Such a multipolelike soliton is composed of two or more arc patterns with opposite phase between the adjacent components. The width of existence domain is determined only by the saturation degree of medium. The maximum number of soliton components depends on the radius of the lattice ring, where they reside. Those novel solitons can be trapped entirely on any ring of the Bessel lattice provided that the lattice is modulated deep enough. This study offers a smooth transition from the multipole soliton to necklace soliton.

Matter-wave solitons in radially periodic potentials

We investigate two-dimensional (2D) states in Bose-Einstein condensates with self-attraction or self-repulsion, trapped in an axially symmetric optical-lattice potential periodic along the radius. The states trapped both in the central potential well and in remote circular troughs are studied. In the repulsive mode, a new soliton species is found, in the form of radial gap solitons. The latter solitons are completely stable if they carry zero vorticity (l=0) , while with l not equal 0 they develop a weak azimuthal modulation, which makes them rotating patterns, that persist indefinitely long. In addition, annular gap solitons may support stable azimuthal dark-soliton pairs on their crests. In remote troughs of the attractive model, stable localized states may assume a ringlike shape with weak azimuthal modulation, or shrink into solitons strongly localized in the azimuthal direction, which is explained in the framework of an averaged 1D equation with the cyclic azimuthal coordinate. Numerical simulations of the attractive model also reveal stable necklacelike patterns, built of several strongly localized peaks. Dynamics of strongly localized solitons circulating in the troughs is studied too. While the solitons with sufficiently small velocities are completely stable, fast solitons gradually decay, due to the leakage of matter into the adjacent trough, under the action of the centrifugal force. Investigation of head-on collisions between strongly localized solitons traveling in circular troughs shows that collisions between in-phase solitons in a common trough lead to collapse, while pi-out-of-phase solitons bounce many times, but eventually merge into a single one, without collapsing. In-phase solitons colliding in adjacent circular troughs also tend to merge into a single soliton.
