Wet etching technique for fabrication of a high-quality plastic optical fiber sensor

In this study, a simple wet etching technique is developed by employing aqueous solutions of acetic acid and ultrasonic irradiation for the fabrication of a high-quality plastic optical fiber (POF) sensor. The effects of acetic acid concentration and temperature and ultrasonic power on the etching rate and surface morphology of the etched POFs are investigated. The transmission spectrum and sensitivity of the etched POF sensors are evaluated using glucose solutions. We discovered that the POF sensors, which are fabricated using an aqueous solution of acetic acid with a concentration of 80 vol. % under an ultrasonic power of 130 W and temperature of 25°C, exhibit good light transmission and a high sensitivity of 9.10  [(RIU)(g/L)]^-1 in the glucose solutions.

Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) Mapping Coupled with Multivariate Curve Resolution (MCR) for Studying the Miscibility of Chlorobutyl Rubber/Polyamide-12 Blends

A series of chlorobutyl rubber/polyamide-12 (CIIR/PA-12) blends compatibilized by different amounts of maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) were investigated by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) mapping. Multivariate curve resolution (MCR) was used to process the FT-IR images. Both the spectra of pure components in the blends and their concentration distributions in a micro-region were acquired. Our results demonstrated that the blend with 15 parts per hundred rubber PP-g-MAH showed the best miscibility. An amide interphase and an imide interphase were inferred by analyzing the spectra of MCR component 3 of the blends with and without PP-g-MAH, respectively. Correspondingly, two different compatibilizing mechanisms were proposed for these blends.

Regions of interest in FTIR imaging applications: Diffusion of nicotine into ethylene-co-vinyl acetate films

Effective image analysis of dynamic processes, such as diffusion and dissolution, requires precise reporting of component locations in space and time. An improved method for analyzing FTIR images is described which employs hypothesis testing in the spatial and temporal domains. Changes in the observed absorbance (over space and time) are revealed by comparison to a reference statistic, which can be tailored by choosing the size of a region of interest. This improved analysis method was used to compare the rates of diffusion of nicotine into poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) film from aqueous solutions containing anionic and nonionic surfactants. Compared to a solution without surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate inhibited the uptake of nicotine from aqueous solution whereas Tween 40 enhanced the uptake. The nicotine diffusion rate also showed a dependence on the length of the hydrophobic segment of nonionic surfactants. These results demonstrate the roles of solubilization, wetting, and viscosity on diffusion-controlled drug release.

Experimental aspects of asynchronous rapid-scan fourier transform infrared imaging

In the asynchronous, rapid-scan approach to Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) imaging, data sampling is not correlated with the zero crossings of the interference fringes of the HeNe reference laser. The success of this data collection scheme depends on the reproducibility of the clock signals driving the interferometer mirror and focal plane array data collection. In previous studies, it was shown that this implementation provides for markedly faster data acquisition without sacrificing data quality, as compared with stepscan imaging. This approach to data collection introduces some unique peculiarities to the acquisition and processing of imaging data. The purpose of this paper is to address a few of these concerns in terms of their effect on final data quality. Also, the practical aspects of implementing such an acquisition scheme are described in detail.
