Modulation of network excitability by persistent activity: how working memory affects the response to incoming stimuli

A cerebellum inspired spiking neural network as a multi-model for pattern classification and robotic trajectory prediction

Spiking neural networks were introduced to understand spatiotemporal information processing in neurons and have found their application in pattern encoding, data discrimination, and classification. Bioinspired network architectures are considered for event-driven tasks, and scientists have looked at different theories based on the architecture and functioning. Motor tasks, for example, have networks inspired by cerebellar architecture where the granular layer recodes sparse representations of the mossy fiber (MF) inputs and has more roles in motor learning. Using abstractions from cerebellar connections and learning rules of deep learning network (DLN), patterns were discriminated within datasets, and the same algorithm was used for trajectory optimization. In the current work, a cerebellum-inspired spiking neural network with dynamics of cerebellar neurons and learning mechanisms attributed to the granular layer, Purkinje cell (PC) layer, and cerebellar nuclei interconnected by excitatory and inhibitory synapses was implemented. The model’s pattern discrimination capability was tested for two tasks on standard machine learning (ML) datasets and on following a trajectory of a low-cost sensor-free robotic articulator. Tuned for supervised learning, the pattern classification capability of the cerebellum-inspired network algorithm has produced more generalized models than data-specific precision models on smaller training datasets. The model showed an accuracy of 72%, which was comparable to standard ML algorithms, such as MLP (78%), Dl4jMlpClassifier (64%), RBFNetwork (71.4%), and libSVM-linear (85.7%). The cerebellar model increased the network’s capability and decreased storage, augmenting faster computations. Additionally, the network model could also implicitly reconstruct the trajectory of a 6-degree of freedom (DOF) robotic arm with a low error rate by reconstructing the kinematic parameters. The variability between the actual and predicted trajectory points was noted to be ± 3 cm (while moving to a position in a cuboid space of 25 × 30 × 40 cm). Although a few known learning rules were implemented among known types of plasticity in the cerebellum, the network model showed a generalized processing capability for a range of signals, modulating the data through the interconnected neural populations. In addition to potential use on sensor-free or feed-forward based controllers for robotic arms and as a generalized pattern classification algorithm, this model adds implications to motor learning theory.

The Spatiotemporal Neural Dynamics of Intersensory Attention Capture of Salient Stimuli: A Large-Scale Auditory-Visual Modeling Study

The spatiotemporal dynamics of the neural mechanisms underlying endogenous (top-down) and exogenous (bottom-up) attention, and how attention is controlled or allocated in intersensory perception are not fully understood. We investigated these issues using a biologically realistic large-scale neural network model of visual-auditory object processing of short-term memory. We modeled and incorporated into our visual-auditory object-processing model the temporally changing neuronal mechanisms for the control of endogenous and exogenous attention. The model successfully performed various bimodal working memory tasks, and produced simulated behavioral and neural results that are consistent with experimental findings. Simulated fMRI data were generated that constitute predictions that human experiments could test. Furthermore, in our visual-auditory bimodality simulations, we found that increased working memory load in one modality would reduce the distraction from the other modality, and a possible network mediating this effect is proposed based on our model.

A Model for Structured Information Representation in Neural Networks of the Brain

Humans can reason at an abstract level and structure information into abstract categories, but the underlying neural processes have remained unknown. Recent experimental data provide the hint that this is likely to involve specific subareas of the brain from which structural information can be decoded. Based on this data, we introduce the concept of assembly projections, a general principle for attaching structural information to content in generic networks of spiking neurons. According to the assembly projections principle, structure-encoding assemblies emerge and are dynamically attached to content representations through Hebbian plasticity mechanisms. This model provides the basis for explaining a number of experimental data and provides a basis for modeling abstract computational operations of the brain.

On the relationship between persistent delay activity, repetition enhancement and priming

Human efficiency in processing incoming stimuli (in terms of speed and/or accuracy) is typically enhanced by previous exposure to the same, or closely related stimuli—a phenomenon referred to as priming. In spite of the large body of knowledge accumulated in behavioral studies about the conditions conducive to priming, and its relationship with other forms of memory, the underlying neuronal correlates of priming are still under debate. The idea has repeatedly been advanced that a major neuronal mechanism supporting behaviorally-expressed priming is repetition suppression, a widespread reduction of spiking activity upon stimulus repetition which has been routinely exposed by single-unit recordings in non-human primates performing delayed-response, as well as passive fixation tasks. This proposal is mainly motivated by the observation that, in human fMRI studies, priming is associated to a significant reduction of the BOLD signal (widely interpreted as a proxy of the level of spiking activity) upon stimulus repetition. Here, we critically re-examine a large part of the electrophysiological literature on repetition suppression in non-human primates and find that repetition suppression is systematically accompanied by stimulus-selective delay period activity, together with repetition enhancement, an increase of spiking activity upon stimulus repetition in small neuronal populations. We argue that repetition enhancement constitutes a more viable candidate for a putative neuronal substrate of priming, and propose a minimal framework that links together, mechanistically and functionally, repetition suppression, stimulus-selective delay activity and repetition enhancement.
