Challenges and opportunities for comparative studies of survival rates: An example with male pinnipeds

Survival rates are a central component of life-history strategies of large vertebrate species. However, comparative studies seldom investigate interspecific variation in survival rates with respect to other life-history traits, especially for males. The lack of such studies could be due to the challenges associated with obtaining reliable datasets, incorporating information on the 0-1 probability scale, or dealing with several types of measurement error in life-history traits, which can be a computationally intensive process that is often absent in comparative studies. We present a quantitative approach using a Bayesian phylogenetically controlled regression with the flexibility to incorporate uncertainty in estimated survival rates and quantitative life-history traits while considering genetic similarity among species and uncertainty in relatedness. As with any comparative analysis, our approach makes several assumptions regarding the generalizability and comparability of empirical data from separate studies. Our model is versatile in that it can be applied to any species group of interest and include any life-history traits as covariates. We used an unbiased simulation framework to provide "proof of concept" for our model and applied a slightly richer model to a real data example for pinnipeds. Pinnipeds are an excellent taxonomic group for comparative analysis, but survival rate data are scarce. Our work elucidates the challenges associated with addressing important questions related to broader ecological life-history patterns and how survival-reproduction trade-offs might shape evolutionary histories of extant taxa. Specifically, we underscore the importance of having high-quality estimates of age-specific survival rates and information on other life-history traits that reasonably characterize a species for accurately comparing across species.

3D genital shape complexity in female marine mammals

Comparisons of 3D shapes have recently been applied to diverse anatomical structures using landmarking techniques. However, discerning evolutionary patterns can be challenging for structures lacking homologous landmarks. We used alpha shape analyses to quantify vaginal shape complexity in 40 marine mammal specimens including cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians. We explored phylogenetic signal and the potential roles of natural and sexual selection on vaginal shape evolution. Complexity scores were consistent with qualitative observations. Cetaceans had a broad range of alpha complexities, while pinnipeds were comparatively simple and sirenians were complex. Intraspecific variation was found. Three-dimensional surface heat maps revealed that shape complexity was driven by invaginations and protrusions of the vaginal wall. Phylogenetic signal was weak and metrics of natural selection (relative neonate size) and sexual selection (relative testes size, sexual size dimorphism, and penis morphology) did not explain vaginal complexity patterns. Additional metrics, such as penile shape complexity, may yield interesting insights into marine mammal genital coevolution. We advocate for the use of alpha shapes to discern patterns of evolution that would otherwise not be possible in 3D anatomical structures lacking homologous landmarks.

Severe Sea Lion Bites in Urban Cold-Water Swimmers

BACKGROUND

A series of sea lion bites in open-water swimmers recently gained the attention of the national and international media. Pinniped (the clade including seals and sea lions) bites historically have been in people who hunt or handle marine mammals. As populations of humans and pinnipeds continue to grow, interactions with animals by those participating in recreational activities are likely to become more frequent.

CASE REPORTS

In December of 2017 and January of 2018, four sea lion (Zalophus californianus) bites in humans occurred at a popular open-water recreational swimming area in San Francisco, California. Three swimmers required treatment at a local trauma center and two required surgery. Two of the wounds were potentially life threatening; one swimmer required a field tourniquet to stop bleeding from the antecubital fossa, and the bite in another narrowly missed the femoral artery. The purpose of this report is to offer an in-depth discussion of antimicrobial use and rabies postexposure prophylaxis in patients with severe pinniped bites. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: Information from this report can be used in conjunction with input from local experts to develop a thoughtful therapeutic plan for patients with severe pinniped bites. Doxycycline is the first-line antibiotic therapy, but broader coverage may be needed for severe wounds with the potential for contamination. The likelihood of rabies is low, and rabies postexposure prophylaxis should be reserved for cases that involve unusually aggressive animal behavior or other factors suggestive of rabies.

A long-term study reveals multiple reproductive behavior strategies among territorial adult male Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus)

We conducted a long-term study to assess how tenure and territorial behaviors influence reproductive success among male Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus (Schreber, 1776)). Copulations by males (n = 44) that maintained territories on a rookery in the Gulf of Alaska from 2001 to 2009 were observed using a remote video system. Approximately half of postpartum females copulated with a male in a different territory from where they gave birth. Nearly two-thirds of territorial males with known tenure were unsuccessful in copulating during their first year. Number of copulations for territorial males increased from acquisition year to year 2 with no change in subsequent years. Cluster analysis of tenure and territorial tactic variables for 15 males with observed lifetime reproductive success was used to describe multiple reproductive strategies. Characteristics of the two most successful strategies were the following: (i) males typically copulated in their first year, retained the same territories for 3–5 years, and occupied centrally located coastal territories where the highest percentage of females gave birth and (ii) males did not copulate until at least their third year and occupied peripheral territories with fewer births for a longer tenure of 7–8 years. Results indicated that lifetime reproductive success was not achieved solely by time on the breeding area; rather, it was achieved from a combination of tenure and territorial tactics.

Unexpected strong polygyny in the brown-throated three-toed sloth

Promiscuous mating strategies are much more common than previously appreciated. So much so, that several authors have proposed that promiscuity is the "rule" rather than the exception in vertebrate mating systems. Decreasing species mobility and increasing habitat fragmentation have both been suggested to reduce the "polygyny potential" of the environment and promote other mating strategies like promiscuity in females. We explored the social and genetic mating system for one of the most sedentary extant mammals, the brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus), within a highly fragmented Neotropical habitat. Surprisingly, we found that three-toed sloths were strongly polygynous, with males excluding male competitors from their core ranges, and exhibiting strong reproductive skew. Indeed, only 25% of all resident adult males sired offspring and one individual sired half of all sampled juveniles. Paradoxically, a sedentary life-history strategy seems to facilitate polygyny in fragmented landscapes because multiple females can persist within small patches of habitat, and be monopolized by a single male. Our work demonstrates that strong polygyny can arise in systems in which the polygyny potential should be extremely low, and other strategies, including promiscuity, would be favoured. Mating systems can be influenced by a multitude of factor and are dynamic, varying among taxa, over time, and across habitats; consequently, mating systems remain difficult to predict based on general ecological principles.
