Echinoderms display morphological and behavioural phenotypic plasticity in response to their trophic environment

Genetic Evidence Supports Species Delimitation of Luidia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

AbstractAccurate species delimitation is crucial to understanding biodiversity. In the northern Gulf of Mexico, recent genetic evidence has suggested that the tricolor Luidia lawrencei is not a species distinct from the gray Luidia clathrata. We collected Luidia specimens from Apalachee Bay, Florida, and morphologically identified 11 as L. clathrata and 16 as L. lawrencei. We sequenced 1074 bp of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and found ~14% divergence between L. clathrata and L. lawrencei, suggesting two distinct species (within-species divergence was <1%). Two specimens were phenotypically L. lawrencei (i.e., tricolor morph) but mitochondrially were L. clathrata. Our findings lend support to maintaining L. clathrata and L. lawrencei as distinct species. However, the species boundary between these two taxa may be porous, and ongoing hybridization may occur when the two species are found in sympatry. Future work with nuclear markers is warranted to determine the frequency of hybridization and the extent of introgression. Clarifying the genetic relationship between these species will provide a baseline for assessing ongoing changes in connectivity of these two highly abundant sea stars in the rapidly warming northern Gulf of Mexico.

Responses to environmentally relevant microplastics are species-specific with dietary habit as a potential sensitivity indicator

There is a lack of information on understanding how marine organisms respond to environmentally relevant microplastics (MP) which hampers decision making for waste management strategies. This study addresses this information gap by determining whether responses to MPs are species specific within a functional group. Benthic residing sea urchins, Psammechinus miliaris and Paracentrotus lividus were used as a case study. Psammechinus miliaris are strong omnivores with dietary intake including hard components (e.g. shell, tubeworms) and therefore likely to cope with the ingestion of MPs, while P. lividus are strong herbivores consuming softer dietary items (e.g. biofilms, algae) and therefore more likely sensitive. Responses to environmentally relevant MPs were conducted across two trials. Trial one determined the impact of short term (24 h) external exposure to storm-like sediment resuspension of MP concentrations (53 μm polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 25,000 MP L^-1) compared to a control without MPs. No significant impacts were observed for both P. lividus and P. miliaris on metabolic rate or righting time, and urchins were able to remove MPs from the body surface using pedicellariae and cilia. Trial two determined the impact of medium term (2 months) ingestion of a diet laced with PVC MPs (59 μm) at an inclusion rate of 0.5% mass and a control diet (without MPs) on somatic growth and animal condition. The ingestion of MPs did not significantly impact P. miliaris but significantly reduced the alimentary index within P. lividus, indicating a compromised nutritional state. This study shows that responses to microplastics are species-specific and therefore cannot be generalized. Furthermore, feeding habit could act as a potential indicator for sensitivity to MP ingestion which will be important for impact assessments of plastic pollution and management strategies.

Plasticity in the antipredator behavior of the orange-footed sea cucumber under shifting hydrodynamic forces

Marine invertebrates that move too slowly to evade unfavorable environmental change may instead exhibit phenotypic plasticity, allowing them to adjust to varying conditions. The orange-footed sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa is a slow-moving suspension feeder that is preyed on by the purple sunstar Solaster endeca. The sea cucumber’s antipredator behavior involves changing shape and detaching from the substratum, which might increase its probability of being displaced by water motion into an unsuitable environment. We hypothesized that sea cucumbers’ antipredator responses would be diminished under stronger hydrodynamic forces, and that behavioral strategies would be flexible so that individuals could adjust to frequent changes in water flows. In a natural orange-footed sea cucumber habitat, individuals lived along a pronounced hydrodynamic gradient, allowing us to measure antipredator behavior under different water flow strengths. We placed purple sunstars in physical contact with sea cucumbers living at various points along the gradient to elicit antipredator responses. We then repeated this procedure in a laboratory mesocosm that generated weak and strong hydrodynamic forces similar to those observed at the field site. Subjects in the mesocosm experiment were tested in both wave conditions to determine if their antipredator behavior would change in response to sudden environmental change, as would be experienced under deteriorating sea conditions. Antipredator responses did not covary with hydrodynamic forces in the field. However, antipredator responses in the mesocosm experiment increased when individuals were transplanted from strong to weak forces and decreased when transplanted from weak to strong forces. Overall, our results indicate environmentally induced plasticity in the antipredator behavior of the orange-footed sea cucumber.

Predators indirectly induce stronger prey through a trophic cascade

Many prey species induce defences in direct response to predation cues. However, prey defences could also be enhanced by predators indirectly via mechanisms that increase resource availability to prey, e.g. trophic cascades. We evaluated the relative impacts of these direct and indirect effects on the mechanical strength of the New Zealand sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus We measured crush-resistance of sea urchin tests (skeletons) in (i) two marine reserves, where predators of sea urchins are relatively common and have initiated a trophic cascade resulting in abundant food for surviving urchins in the form of kelp, and (ii) two adjacent fished areas where predators and kelps are rare. Sea urchins inhabiting protected rocky reefs with abundant predators and food had more crush-resistant tests than individuals on nearby fished reefs where predators and food were relatively rare. A six-month long mesocosm experiment showed that while both food supply and predator cues increased crush-resistance, the positive effect of food supply on crush-resistance was greater. Our results demonstrate a novel mechanism whereby a putative morphological defence in a prey species is indirectly strengthened by predators via cascading predator effects on resource availability. This potentially represents an important mechanism that promotes prey persistence in the presence of predators.
