Influence of correspondence noise and spatial scaling on the upper limit for spatial displacement in fully-coherent random-dot kinematogram stimuli

Manipulating the Fourier spectra of stimuli comprising a two-frame kinematogram to study early visual motion-detecting mechanisms: Perception versus short latency ocular-following responses

Two-frame kinematograms have been extensively used to study motion perception in human vision. Measurements of the direction-discrimination performance limits (Dmax) have been the primary subject of such studies, whereas surprisingly little research has asked how the variability in the spatial frequency content of individual frames affects motion processing. Here, we used two-frame one-dimensional vertical pink noise kinematograms, in which images in both frames were bandpass filtered, with the central spatial frequency of the filter manipulated independently for each image. To avoid spatial aliasing, there was no actual leftward-rightward shift of the image: instead, the phases of all Fourier components of the second image were shifted by ±¼ wavelength with respect to those of the first. We recorded ocular-following responses (OFRs) and perceptual direction discrimination in human subjects. OFRs were in the direction of the Fourier components' shift and showed a smooth decline in amplitude, well fit by Gaussian functions, as the difference between the central spatial frequencies of the first and second images increased. In sharp contrast, 100% correct perceptual direction-discrimination performance was observed when the difference between the central spatial frequencies of the first and second images was small, deteriorating rapidly to chance when increased further. Perceptual dependencies moved closer to the OFR ones when subjects were allowed to grade the strength of perceived motion. Response asymmetries common for perceptual judgments and the OFRs suggest that they rely on the same early visual processing mechanisms. The OFR data were quantitatively well described by a model which combined two factors: (1) an excitatory drive determined by a power law sum of stimulus Fourier components' contributions, scaled by (2) a contrast normalization mechanism. Thus, in addition to traditional studies relying on perceptual reports, the OFRs represent a valuable behavioral tool for studying early motion processing on a fine scale.

Apparent Motion Perception in the Praying Mantis: Psychophysics and Modelling

Computer monitors, smart phone screens, and other forms of digital displays present a series of still images (frames) in which objects are displaced in small steps, tricking us into perceiving smooth motion. This illusion is referred to as “apparent motion”. For motion to be perceived, the magnitude of each displacement step must be smaller than a certain limit, referred to as Dmax. Previous studies have investigated the relationship between this limit and object size in humans and found that the maximum displacement is larger for larger objects than for smaller ones. In this work, we investigated the same relationship in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola by presenting them with moving random chequerboard patterns on a computer monitor. Even though motion perception in humans and insects are believed to be explained equally well by the same underlying model, we found that Dmax scales differently with object size in mantids. These results suggest that there may be qualitative differences in how mantids perceive apparent motion compared to humans.

Abstract

Apparent motion is the perception of motion created by rapidly presenting still frames in which objects are displaced in space. Observers can reliably discriminate the direction of apparent motion when inter-frame object displacement is below a certain limit, Dmax. Earlier studies of motion perception in humans found that Dmax is lower-bounded at around 15 arcmin, and thereafter scales with the size of the spatial elements in the images. Here, we run corresponding experiments in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola to investigate how Dmax scales with the element size. We use random moving chequerboard patterns of varying element and displacement step sizes to elicit the optomotor response, a postural stabilization mechanism that causes mantids to lean in the direction of large-field motion. Subsequently, we calculate Dmax as the displacement step size corresponding to a 50% probability of detecting an optomotor response in the same direction as the stimulus. Our main findings are that the mantis Dmax scales roughly as a square-root of element size and that, in contrast to humans, it is not lower-bounded. We present two models to explain these observations: a simple high-level model based on motion energy in the Fourier domain and a more-detailed one based on the Reichardt Detector. The models present complementary intuitive and physiologically-realistic accounts of how Dmax scales with the element size in insects. We conclude that insect motion perception is limited by only a single stage of spatial filtering, reflecting the optics of the compound eye. In contrast, human motion perception reflects a second stage of spatial filtering, at coarser scales than imposed by human optics, likely corresponding to the magnocellular pathway. After this spatial filtering, mantis and human motion perception and Dmax are qualitatively very similar.

Effect of spatial and temporal stimulus parameters on the maturation of global motion perception

There are discrepancies with respect to the age at which adult-like performance is reached on tasks assessing global motion perception. This is in part because performance in children depends on stimulus parameters. We recently showed that five-year-olds demonstrated adult-like performance over a range of speeds when the speed ratio was comprised of longer spatial and temporal displacements; but displayed immature performance when the speed ratio was comprised of shorter displacements. The goal of the current study was to assess the effect of these global motion stimulus parameters across a broader age range in order to estimate the age at which mature performance is reached. Motion coherence thresholds were assessed in 182 children and adults aged 7-30years. Dot displacement (Δx) was 1, 5, or 30min of arc; frame duration (Δt) was 17 or 50ms. This created a total of six conditions. Consistent with our previous results, coherence thresholds in the youngest children assessed were adult-like at the two conditions with the largest Δx. Maturity was reached around age 12 for the medium Δx, and by age 16 for the smallest Δx. Performance did not appear to be affected by Δt. This late maturation may reflect a long developmental period for cortical networks underlying global motion perception. These findings resolve many of the discrepancies across previous studies, and should be considered when using global motion tasks to assess children with atypical development.
