Effect of 3-D depth structure, element size, and area containing elements on total-element overestimation phenomenon

The number of elements distributed in a three-dimensional stimulus is overestimated compared to a two-dimensional stimulus when both stimuli have the same number of elements. We examined the effect of the properties of a three-dimensional stimulus (the number of overlapping stereo surfaces, size of the elements, and size of the area containing elements, on the overestimation phenomenon in four experiments. The two stimuli were presented side-by-side with the same diameters. Observers judged which of the three-dimensional standard and two-dimensional comparison had more elements. The results showed that (a) the overestimation phenomenon occurred for the three-dimensional standard stimuli, (b) the size of the areas affected the amount of overestimation, while the number of overlapping stereo surfaces and size of elements did not, and (c) the amount of overestimation increased when the stimuli included more than 100 elements. Implications of these findings were discussed in the framework of back-surface bias, occlusion, and disparity-processing interference models.

Numerosity adaptation partly depends on the allocation of implicit numerosity-contingent visuo-spatial attention

Like other perceptual attributes, numerosity is susceptible to adaptation. Nevertheless, it has never been fully investigated whether adaptation to numerosity is fully perceptual in nature or if it stems from the mixed influence of perception and attention. In the present work, we addressed this point throughout three separate experiments aiming at investigating the potential role played by visuo-spatial attentional mechanisms in shaping numerosity perception and adaptation. In Experiments 1 and 2, we showed that the magnitude of numerosity adaptation can be strongly influenced by the distribution of numerosity-contingent visuo-spatial attentional resources during the adaptation period. Results from Experiment 1 revealed a robust reduction of adaptation magnitude whenever a second numerical stimulus was presented in a diametrically opposite location from that of the adaptor, despite this second adapter being neutral as matched in numerosity with the following stimulus displayed in that location. In Experiment 2, we showed that this reduction in adaptation did not occur in cases where the second stimulus was not numerical, suggesting that attentional resources specifically related to numerosity information accounts for the results of Experiment 1. Finally, in Experiment 3, we showed that uninformative visuo-spatial cues shape numerosity discrimination judgments both at baseline and during adaptation. Taken together, our results seem to indicate that visuo-spatial attention plays a relevant role in numerosity perception and that adaptation to numerosity is actively influenced by this cognitive process.

Regular Distribution Inhibits Generic Numerosity Processing

This study investigated the role of pattern regularity in approximate numerical processing. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the change in stimulus size has a distinct effect on the adaptation aftereffect for random and regular patterns. For regular patterns, adapting to large patterns and being tested with small patterns caused stronger aftereffects than the reverse treatment, in which the participants adapted to small patterns and were tested with large patterns. For random patterns, this effect was absent. Experiment 2 revealed a distinct connectedness effect on the numerosity processing of random and regular patterns. For random patterns, reference stimuli were perceived to contain fewer items when the dots were connected by lines than when they were not connected, and the number of items in the connected reference was further underestimated when the participants adapted to unconnected patterns with the same number of dots. For regular patterns, this effect was absent. Distinct mechanisms were thus suggested for the numerosity coding of random and regular patterns. For random patterns, the change in primary texture features would be abstracted from numerosity processing, while connectedness could affect this coding by affecting the processing of numerical unit individuation. For regular patterns, generic numerosity processing is inhibited, and numerical judgments appear to be inferred from the visual processing results of texture features such as dot size or the distance between adjacent dots.

Motion along the mental number line reveals shared representations for numerosity and space

Perception of number and space are tightly intertwined. It has been proposed that this is due to ‘cortical recycling’, where numerosity processing takes over circuits originally processing space. Do such ‘recycled’ circuits retain their original functionality? Here, we investigate interactions between numerosity and motion direction, two functions that both localize to parietal cortex. We describe a new phenomenon in which visual motion direction adapts nonsymbolic numerosity perception, giving rise to a repulsive aftereffect: motion to the left adapts small numbers, leading to overestimation of numerosity, while motion to the right adapts large numbers, resulting in underestimation. The reference frame of this effect is spatiotopic. Together with the tuning properties of the effect this suggests that motion direction-numerosity cross-adaptation may occur in a homolog of area LIP. ‘Cortical recycling’ thus expands but does not obliterate the functions originally performed by the recycled circuit, allowing for shared computations across domains.

Our sense of number is thought to have emerged from the circuits of cortical neurons in the brain that originally represent space, a process known as 'cortical recycling'. Accordingly, our perception of space and number are tightly intertwined: for example, people think about numbers on a mental number line, where smaller numbers are mapped to the left, and larger numbers are mapped to the right. Also, damage to a brain region called the parietal cortex disrupts both space and number processing.

If number processing recycles the neurons that encode space, which form does this appropriation take? Recycling could preserve the original behavior of the neurons (processing space), thus enriching the neurons’ functional repertoire with a new capacity (processing number). Alternatively, the newly developed role could replace the original one, such that space and number cohabitate the same brain area but use separate neurons.

To disentangle these hypotheses, Schwiedrzik et al. used a technique called 'perceptual adaptation'. Here, continuously showing someone a particular feature eventually exhausts the neurons that respond to that feature. Neurons that respond to the opposite feature are however less exhausted and dominate perception. Consequently, people perceive the opposite of what they are adapted to. For example, after continuously seeing dots moving to the right, people perceive stationary dots as moving to the left. Similarly, after being exposed to large numbers of dots they underestimate how many dots they see.

If the same neurons process numbers and space, then adapting to movement in a particular direction should influence number perception. During Schwiedrzik et al.’s experiments, volunteers watched moving dots on a computer screen. After seeing dots move to the right, they underestimated the number of dots that then appeared on the screen. This is likely to be because larger numbers are mentally mapped to the right, and seeing rightward motion for a long time exhausted these neurons. This means that neurons that respond to smaller numbers (mentally mapped to the left) were more active when the new dots were presented, leading the volunteers to underestimate how many dots they saw. Adapting to leftward motion led to the opposite effect, with volunteers overestimating the number of dots. Thus, motion can literally move us up and down the number line.

These results indicate that the same neurons encode both space and numbers. Cortical recycling does not erase the neurons’ original behavior: instead, neurons may carry out the same computations when processing numbers or space. This would allow the brain to add new functionality without sacrificing any of the computational resources for processing space.

Faces in commonly experienced configurations enter awareness faster due to their curvature relative to fixation

The extent to which perceptually suppressed face stimuli are still processed has been extensively studied using the continuous flash suppression paradigm (CFS). Studies that rely on breaking CFS (b-CFS), in which the time it takes for an initially suppressed stimulus to become detectable is measured, have provided evidence for relatively complex processing of invisible face stimuli. In contrast, adaptation and neuroimaging studies have shown that perceptually suppressed faces are only processed for a limited set of features, such as its general shape. In this study, we asked whether perceptually suppressed face stimuli presented in their commonly experienced configuration would break suppression faster than when presented in an uncommonly experienced configuration. This study was motivated by a recent neuroimaging study showing that commonly experienced face configurations are more strongly represented in the fusiform face area. Our findings revealed that faces presented in commonly experienced configurations indeed broke suppression faster, yet this effect did not interact with face inversion suggesting that, in a b-CFS context, perceptually suppressed faces are potentially not processed by specialized (high-level) face processing mechanisms. Rather, our pattern of results is consistent with an interpretation based on the processing of more basic visual properties such as convexity.

Numerosity adaptation along the Y-Axis affects numerosity perception along the X-Axis: does numerosity adaptation activate MNLs?

The current study characterized the spatial selectivity of numerosity adaptation. In Experiment 1, adaptors were arranged vertically with 8 dots at the top of the visual field and 400 dots at the bottom, and participants' perceived magnitude in the left field decreased compared to that in the right, as revealed in the numerosity comparing task after adaptation. In contrast, the perceived magnitude in the right field decreased compared to that in the left with inversed adaptors (400 dots at top, 8 at bottom). In Experiment 2, adaptors were presented horizontally, and they showed no significant effect on numerosity perception, which was tested vertically. This study demonstrated that numerosity adaptation along the vertical orientation could affect numerosity perception along the horizontal orientation, and the latter was affected by the former according to a rule of associating "top" with "right" and "bottom" with "left." The spatial selectivity of numerosity adaptation showed distinguishing features that should function to abstract spatial relationships rather than create purely retinotopic mapping. We proposed that numerosity adaptation is based on spatial-numerical-associated codes. Vertical adaptors could activate both the vertical and horizontal Mental Number Lines (MNLs) and involve an interaction between these types of MNLs. According to behavioral data, horizontal adaptors showed no significant influence on perception along the vertical orientation, which might be due to the higher threshold required to activate the vertical MNL.

Unbiased Measures of Interocular Transfer of Motion Adaptation

Numerous studies have measured the extent to which motion aftereffects transfer interocularly. However, many have done so using bias-prone methods, and studies rarely compare different types of motion directly. Here, we use a technique designed to reduce bias (Morgan, 2013, Journal of Vision, 13(8):26, 1–11) to estimate interocular transfer (IOT) for five types of motion: simple translational motion, expansion/contraction, rotation, spiral, and complex translational motion. We used both static and dynamic targets with subjects making binary judgments of perceived speed. Overall, the average IOT was 65%, consistent with previous studies (mean over 17 studies of 67% transfer). There was a main effect of motion type, with translational motion producing stronger IOT (mean: 86%) overall than any of the more complex varieties of motion (mean: 51%). This is inconsistent with the notion that IOT should be strongest for motion processed in extrastriate regions that are fully binocular. We conclude that adaptation is a complex phenomenon too poorly understood to make firm inferences about the binocular structure of motion systems.
