Attentional modulation of auditory steady-state responses

Steady-state responses to concurrent melodies: source distribution, top-down, and bottom-up attention

Humans can direct attentional resources to a single sound occurring simultaneously among others to extract the most behaviourally relevant information present. To investigate this cognitive phenomenon in a precise manner, we used frequency-tagging to separate neural auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) that can be traced back to each auditory stimulus, from the neural mix elicited by multiple simultaneous sounds. Using a mixture of 2 frequency-tagged melody streams, we instructed participants to selectively attend to one stream or the other while following the development of the pitch contour. Bottom-up attention towards either stream was also manipulated with salient changes in pitch. Distributed source analyses of magnetoencephalography measurements showed that the effect of ASSR enhancement from top-down driven attention was strongest at the left frontal cortex, while that of bottom-up driven attention was dominant at the right temporal cortex. Furthermore, the degree of ASSR suppression from simultaneous stimuli varied across cortical lobes and hemisphere. The ASSR source distribution changes from temporal-dominance during single-stream perception, to proportionally more activity in the frontal and centro-parietal cortical regions when listening to simultaneous streams. These findings are a step forward to studying cognition in more complex and naturalistic soundscapes using frequency-tagging.

Effect of sustained selective attention on steady-state visual evoked potentials

Visual-spatial selective attention enhances the processing of task-relevant visual events while suppressing the processing of irrelevant ones. In this study, we employed a frequency-tagging paradigm to investigate how sustained visual-spatial attention modulates the first harmonic and second harmonic steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). Unlike previous studies, that investigated stimulation durations of 10 s or less, we tested a 30-s period. SSVEPs were elicited by simultaneously presenting to the right and left visual hemifields two pattern reversal checkerboard stimuli modulating at 7.14 Hz and 11.11 Hz. Participants were cued to selectively attend to one visual hemifield while ignoring the other. Behavioral results indicated that participants selectively attended to the cued visual hemifield. When participants attended to the visual stimuli, there were larger second harmonic SSVEPs but no attentional modulation of first harmonics. The results are consistent with the proposal that neural populations underlying first, and second harmonics have distinct functional roles, i.e., first harmonics' mechanisms preserve stimulus properties and are resistant to attentional gain, whereas second harmonics mediate attentional modulation. This interpretation is supported by a gain control theory of selective attention.

Chirp-evoked auditory steady-state response: The effect of repetition rate

OBJECTIVE

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is commonly used in clinical pediatric audiology in order to provide an electrophysiological estimate of hearing threshold, and has the potential to be used in unsupervised mobile EEG applications. Enhancement of the ASSR amplitude through optimization of the stimulation and recording methods shortens the required testing time or reduce the offset between the electrophysiological and behavioral thresholds. Here, we investigate the spatial distribution of the ASSR to broadband chirp stimuli across a wide range of repetition rates on the scalp and in the ears. Moreover, the ASSR amplitude is compared across repetition rates for commonly used electrode configurations.

METHODS

ASSR to chirp stimuli with repetition rates from 6-198 Hz was recorded using scalp EEG and high-density ear-EEG.

RESULTS

The distributions of the ASSR amplitude and phase were found to be dependent on the chirp repetition rate across the scalp, but independent of repetition rate in the ears. The normal drop in ASSR SNR for high repetition rates seen for click and pure tone stimuli was not found for chirp stimuli. Instead, the ASSR SNRs for chirp stimuli at high repetition rates (95-198 Hz) were found to be comparable to that found at 40 Hz for scalp EEG and even higher than 40 Hz ASSR for ear-EEG.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results, use of chirp stimuli with high repetition rates (95-198 Hz) is advantageous for multiple stimulus ASSR recording in both clinical practice and mobile real-life applications.

Neurophysiological Evaluation of Right-Ear Advantage During Dichotic Listening

Right-ear advantage refers to the observation that when two different speech stimuli are simultaneously presented to both ears, listeners report stimuli more correctly from the right ear than the left. It is assumed to result from prominent projection along the auditory pathways to the contralateral hemisphere and the dominance of the left auditory cortex for the perception of speech elements. Our study aimed to investigate the role of attention in the right-ear advantage. We recorded magnetoencephalography data while participants listened to pairs of Japanese two-syllable words (namely, "/ta/ /ko/" or "/i/ /ka/"). The amplitudes of the stimuli were modulated at 35 Hz in one ear and 45 Hz in the other. Such frequency-tagging allowed the selective quantification of left and right auditory cortex responses to left and right ear stimuli. Behavioral tests confirmed the right-ear advantage, with higher accuracy for stimuli presented to the right ear than to the left. The amplitude of the auditory steady-state response was larger when attending to the stimuli compared to passive listening. We detected a correlation between the attention-related increase in the amplitude of the auditory steady-state response and the laterality index of behavioral accuracy. The right-ear advantage in the free-response dichotic listening was also found in neural activities in the left auditory cortex, suggesting that it was related to the allocation of attention to both ears.

Selective Attention Measurement of Experienced Simultaneous Interpreters Using EEG Phase-Locked Response

We quantified the electroencephalogram signals associated with the selective attention processing of experienced simultaneous interpreters and calculated the phase-locked responses evoked by a 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (40-Hz ASSR) and the values of robust inter-trial coherence (ITC) for environmental changes. Since we assumed that an interpreter's attention ability improves with an increase in the number of years of experience of simultaneous interpretation, we divided the participants into two groups based on their simultaneous interpretation experience: experts with more than 15 years of experience (E group; n = 7) and beginners with <1 year (B group; n = 15). We also compared two conditions: simultaneous interpretation (SI) and shadowing (SH). We found a significant interaction in the ITC between years of SI experience (E and B groups) and tasks (SI and SH). This result demonstrates that the number of years of SI experience influences selective attention during interpretation.

Mind Wandering Influences EEG Signal in Complex Multimodal Environments

The phenomenon of mind wandering (MW), as a family of experiences related to internally directed cognition, heavily influences vigilance evolution. In particular, humans in teleoperations monitoring partially automated fleet before assuming manual control whenever necessary may see their attention drift due to internal sources; as such, it could play an important role in the emergence of out-of-the-loop (OOTL) situations and associated performance problems. To follow, quantify, and mitigate this phenomenon, electroencephalogram (EEG) systems already demonstrated robust results. As MW creates an attentional decoupling, both ERPs and brain oscillations are impacted. However, the factors influencing these markers in complex environments are still not fully understood. In this paper, we specifically addressed the possibility of gradual emergence of attentional decoupling and the differences created by the sensory modality used to convey targets. Eighteen participants were asked to (1) supervise an automated drone performing an obstacle avoidance task (visual task) and (2) respond to infrequent beeps as fast as possible (auditory task). We measured event-related potentials and alpha waves through EEG. We also added a 40-Hz amplitude modulated brown noise to evoke steady-state auditory response (ASSR). Reported MW episodes were categorized between task-related and task-unrelated episodes. We found that N1 ERP component elicited by beeps had lower amplitude during task-unrelated MW, whereas P3 component had higher amplitude during task-related MW, compared with other attentional states. Focusing on parieto-occipital regions, alpha-wave activity was higher during task-unrelated MW compared with others. These results support the decoupling hypothesis for task-unrelated MW but not task-related MW, highlighting possible variations in the "depth" of decoupling depending on MW episodes. Finally, we found no influence of attentional states on ASSR amplitude. We discuss possible reasons explaining why. Results underline both the ability of EEG to track and study MW in laboratory tasks mimicking ecological environments, as well as the complex influence of perceptual decoupling on operators' behavior and, in particular, EEG measures.

Brain Computer Interface Using Modulation of Auditory Steady-State Response with Help of Stochastic Resonance

This paper proposes an eye-movement independent brain computer interface based on the modulations of auditory steady-state response (ASSR-BCI) to amplitude-modulated (AM) tones elicited by paying selective attention to one of the two AM tones. Moreover, the proposed ASSR-BCI exploits a stochastic resonance effect to improve the signal separation and attained the mean classification accuracy of 77 % across nine normal subjects under a noise-added condition with sound pressures 60 dB for the two tones and 30 dB for the noise added to the two AM tones. Results from information transfer rate and its inter-individual difference suggest that it may be adequate to set an inter-trial interval at 2∽3 s for a trial time length. It is consequently feasible to develop a practical eye-movement-independent BCI available in eyes-closed state by optimizing the parameters such as the trial time length and electrode sites each user.

A novel EEG paradigm to simultaneously and rapidly assess the functioning of auditory and visual pathways

Objective assessment of the sensory pathways is crucial for understanding their development across the life span and how they may be affected by neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum) and neurological pathologies (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc.). Quick and passive measurements, for example, using electroencephalography (EEG), are especially important when working with infants and young children and with patient populations having communication deficits (e.g., aphasia). However, many EEG paradigms are limited to measuring activity from one sensory domain at a time, may be time consuming, and target only a subset of possible responses from that particular sensory domain (e.g., only auditory brainstem responses or only auditory P1-N1-P2 evoked potentials). Thus we developed a new multisensory paradigm that enables simultaneous, robust, and rapid (6-12 min) measurements of both auditory and visual EEG activity, including auditory brainstem responses, auditory and visual evoked potentials, as well as auditory and visual steady-state responses. This novel method allows us to examine neural activity at various stations along the auditory and visual hierarchies with an ecologically valid continuous speech stimulus, while an unrelated video is playing. Both the speech stimulus and the video can be customized for any population of interest. Furthermore, by using two simultaneous visual steady-state stimulation rates, we demonstrate the ability of this paradigm to track both parafoveal and peripheral visual processing concurrently. We report results from 25 healthy young adults, which validate this new paradigm.NEW & NOTEWORTHY A novel electroencephalography paradigm enables the rapid, reliable, and noninvasive assessment of neural activity along both auditory and visual pathways concurrently. The paradigm uses an ecologically valid continuous speech stimulus for auditory evaluation and can simultaneously track visual activity to both parafoveal and peripheral visual space. This new methodology may be particularly appealing to researchers and clinicians working with infants and young children and with patient populations with limited communication abilities.

Low and high gamma auditory steady-states in response to 440 Hz carrier chirp-modulated tones show no signs of attentional modulation

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) are increasingly used as a neurodiagnostical tool and in neurotechnological applications where it is important to test responses at different frequencies. We aimed to evaluate EEG responses to a low-frequency carrier (440 Hz) tone modulated with 500 ms chirps at 1-120 Hz and to test the ability of stimulation to highlight the low and high gamma band activity. Increasing and decreasing modulation rates were applied. Subjective pleasantness of chirps and attentional effects on ASSRs to chirps were assessed. Our results suggest that brief low-frequency tones modulated with chirps can be used to evoke ASSRs and to test responses at low and high gamma frequencies. Moreover, chirps are perceived as moderately arousing and neutrally pleasant, while ASSRs to these sounds are not sensitive to attentional modulation. The abovementioned findings make chirp stimulation suitable for use in populations with increased perceptual sensitivity to auditory stimuli, for instance like patients with schizophrenia.

Global field synchronization of 40 Hz auditory steady-state response: Does it change with attentional demands?

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) are increasingly used in research of neuropsychiatric disorders and for brain-computer interface applications. However, results on attentional modulation of ASSRs are inconclusive. The evaluation of large-scale effects of task-related modulation on ASSRs might give better estimation of the induced changes. The aim of the study was to test global field synchronization - a reference-independent evaluation of the amount of phase-locking among all active regions at a given frequency - during tasks differing in attentional demands to 40 Hz auditory stimulation. Twenty seven healthy young males participated in the EEG study with concurrent 40 Hz binaural click stimulation and three experimental tasks: 1) to count presented stimuli (focused attention); 2) to silently read a text (distraction); 3) to stay awake with closed eyes (resting). We showed that during auditory 40 Hz stimulation, the global field synchronization of the EEG increased as compared to the silent baseline period and the largest increase was observed when subjects counted stimuli or rested with closed eyes. Our results provide insights that depending on the method of assessment, the 40 Hz ASSR might be an indicator of both local and complex synchronization processes that are affected by the state (task performed or psychopathology) of the participants.

40 Hz Auditory Steady-State Response: The Impact of Handedness and Gender

The 40 Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is a periodic response to a periodic stimulation. Its sources are located in the primary auditory cortex and the asymmetry of the planum temporale has previously been associated with hand preference and gender-related differences; thus subject's handedness and gender could potentially influence ASSRs. Nevertheless, electrophysiological studies of ASSRs are mainly dominated by right-handed participants and the observed findings can only be generalized to the right-handed populations. However, for a potential use of 40 Hz ASSR as a translational biomarker of neuropsychiatric disorders, it is important to investigate the response in association to handedness and gender. We included an equal number of left-handed and right-handed males and females and recorded EEG responses during left-ear, right-ear and both ears stimulation. The results of the study suggest that the processing of 40 Hz auditory stimulation depends on the subjects' gender and handedness: significantly lower phase-locking and strength of 40 Hz ASSRs were observed in left-handed females as compared to left-handed males, but right-handers did not differ in 40 Hz ASSRs. Our observation of the opposite impact of gender in the examined handedness groups stresses the importance of careful consideration of handedness and gender factors when evaluating the determinants of inter individual variability of 40 Hz ASSRs. This finding is of particular importance for clinical studies in psychiatry and neurology.

What is orgasm? A model of sexual trance and climax via rhythmic entrainment

Orgasm is one of the most intense pleasures attainable to an organism, yet its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. On the basis of existing literatures, this article introduces a novel mechanistic model of sexual stimulation and orgasm. In doing so, it characterizes the neurophenomenology of sexual trance and climax, describes parallels in dynamics between orgasms and seizures, speculates on possible evolutionary origins of sex differences in orgasmic responding, and proposes avenues for future experimentation. Here, a model is introduced wherein sexual stimulation induces entrainment of coupling mechanical and neuronal oscillatory systems, thus creating synchronized functional networks within which multiple positive feedback processes intersect synergistically to contribute to sexual experience. These processes generate states of deepening sensory absorption and trance, potentially culminating in climax if critical thresholds are surpassed. The centrality of rhythmic stimulation (and its modulation by salience) for surpassing these thresholds suggests ways in which differential orgasmic responding between individuals-or with different partners-may serve as a mechanism for ensuring adaptive mate choice. Because the production of rhythmic stimulation combines honest indicators of fitness with cues relating to potential for investment, differential orgasmic response may serve to influence the probability of continued sexual encounters with specific mates.
