Identification and Phytotoxicity Assessment of Phenolic Compounds in Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. monilifera (Boneseed)

The Chemical Ecology of Plant Natural Products

Plants are excellent chemists with an impressive capability of biosynthesizing a large variety of natural products (also known as secondary or specialized metabolites) to resist various biotic and abiotic stresses. In this chapter, 989 plant natural products and their ecological functions in plant-herbivore, plant-microorganism, and plant-plant interactions are reviewed. These compounds include terpenoids, phenols, alkaloids, and other structural types. Terpenoids usually provide direct or indirect defense functions for plants, while phenolic compounds play important roles in regulating the interactions between plants and other organisms. Alkaloids are frequently toxic to herbivores and microorganisms, and can therefore also provide defense functions. The information presented should provide the basis for in-depth research of these plant natural products and their natural functions, and also for their further development and utilization.

Olive mill wastewater treatment using natural adsorbents: phytotoxicity on durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) and white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed germination

This research was undertaken to optimize the phenolic compound removal from Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) by sawdust and red clay as natural adsorbents. Fractional factorial experimental design at 25-1 was used in order to optimize the experimental conditions for high removal efficiency. Statistics ANOVA analysis, Fisher's test, and Student's test suggested that the adsorbent dose has the most significant influence on polyphenol removal for both adsorbents. The maximum removal of polyphenols by sawdust reached 49.6% at 60 °C by using 60 g/L of adsorbent dose, pH 2, reaction time of 24 h, and agitation speed of 80 rpm. Whereas, for red clay, 48.08% of polyphenols removal was observed under the same conditions for sawdust except the temperature of 25 °C instead of 60 °C. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters suggested spontaneous process for both adsorbents, endothermic for the sawdust and exothermic for red clay. Furthermore, the phytotoxicity effect of OMW on durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) and white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed germination was investigated. The obtained results showed that the untreated OMW inhibited the seed germination of T. turgidum and P. vulgaris seeds. OMW treatment with red clay followed by dilution (95% water) resulted in 87 and 30% germination of P. vulgaris and T. turgidum, respectively. While, the treatment of OMW with sawdust and dilution at 95% resulted in 51 and 26% germination of P. vulgaris and T. turgidum, respectively.

The Allelopathic Effects of Trewia nudiflora Leaf Extracts and Its Identified Substances

Trewia nudiflora Linn. is a woody plant of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is well known for its use as a folk remedy, but its potential for phytotoxicity has not been explored. Therefore, this study investigated the allelopathic potential and the allelopathic substances in T. nudiflora leaves. The aqueous methanol extract of T. nudiflora was found to have a toxic effect on the plants used in the experiment. The shoot and root development of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and foxtail fescue (Vulpia myuros L.) were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced by the T. nudiflora extracts. The growth inhibition by the T. nudiflora extracts was proportional to the extract concentration and varied with the test plant species. The chromatographic separation of the extracts resulted in the isolation of two substances, identified as loliolide and 6,7,8-trimethoxycoumarin based on their respective spectral analyses. Both substances significantly inhibited lettuce growth at a concentration of 0.01 mM. To inhibit 50% of the growth of the lettuce, the required concentration of loliolide was 0.043 to 0.128 mM, while that of 6,7,8-trimethoxycoumarin was 0.028 to 0.032 mM. Comparing these values, the lettuce growth was more sensitive to 6,7,8-trimethoxycoumarin than loliolide, suggesting that 6,7,8-trimethoxycoumarin was more effective than loliolide. Therefore, the inhibition of the growth of the lettuce and foxtail fescue suggests that loliolide and 6,7,8-trimethoxycoumarin are responsible for the phytotoxicity of the T. nudiflora leaf extracts. Thus, the growth-inhibitory effectiveness of the T. nudiflora extracts and the identified loliolide and 6,7,8-trimethoxycoumarin may be used to develop bioherbicides that restrict the growth of weeds.

Complex Synergistic Interactions among Volatile and Phenolic Compounds Underlie the Effectiveness of Allelopathic Residues Added to the Soil for Weed Control

The introduction of allelopathic cover crops for green manuring or mulching is a regular practice in Integrated Weed Management. In this context, the alternative use of the abundant phytotoxic residues of allelopathic plants from the agroecosystem, e.g., the foliage of Eucalyptus, Acacia, or Cytisus species, is promising. Previous studies identified the phytotoxic compounds potentially involved in the effectiveness of some plant residues when added to the soil for weed control. The low quantities of allelochemicals present in the tissues and the weak phytotoxicity of each of them in their natural concentrations did not explain the significant levels of weed control observed at field scale. Here, to study hypothetical synergistic interactions among the volatile (VOCs) and water-soluble compounds released to the soil matrix, complex mixtures of VOCs, phenolics, or both, mimicking the chemical profiles of Cytisus scoparius were prepared and then tested in vitro on the germination and early growth of two weeds. The effects were calibrated against the VOCs naturally emitted by the fresh plant material and aqueous extract, acting together or not, and with or without soil. The presence of the aqueous extract significantly increased the phytotoxicity of VOCs on Amaranthus retroflexus root growth compared to the volatiles emitted alone. In addition, the soil factor enhanced synergistic interactions among VOCs and water-soluble compounds, resulting in a 54% decrease in total germination and an 80% inhibition of root and shoot growth. Multi-level synergistic chemical interactions should explain the bioherbicidal effectiveness of allelopathic residues applied as a soil amendment.

Bioaugmentation of Soil with Pseudomonas monteilii Strain Eliminates Inhibition of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) Seed Germination by m-Cresol

Cresols are ubiquitous in nature due to their bulk production and end uses in various industrial processes as well as due to their natural presence. They are highly toxic to both fauna and flora and are included in the list of priority pollutants. In the present study, the effect of m-cresol on germination of ten different crop seeds was tested and the seeds of okra and eggplant were found to be very sensitive, okra being the most vulnerable. Okra seeds lost its viability in the presence of m-cresol, which was proportionate to its concentration as indicated by the standard 2,3,5-tetrazoliumtrichloride (TTC) test. Marked decrease in protease and amylase activities was observed in germinating seeds exposed to the compound. The inhibitory effect of m-cresol on germination was eliminated effectively by bioaugmentation of the soil with the cresol-degrading Pseudomonas monteilii S-CSR-0014. Normal germination and seedling vigor were obtained when the seeds were sown four and eight days after the soil inoculation with the bacterial cells, whereas the seeds sown immediately did not show proper germination. The inoculated bacterium degraded m-cresol efficiently from the spiked soil and exhibited concomitant growth. It can be concluded that m-cresol-contaminated soils could be effectively bioremediated to render the soil suitable for normal seed germination and healthy seedling growth of sensitive crops.

Protocol to select efficient microorganisms to treat coffee wastewater

The coffee processing wastewater (CPWW) requires treatment before being disposed of in the environment or reused due to its high organic and inorganic composition and a low pH. The indigenous microbiota from CPWW is highly diverse and could be selected as inoculums in treatment waste plants. Considering the physico-chemical characteristics of wastewater coffee, we elaborate on steps to select the microbial consortium that showed positive impact via decreasing the pollutant parameters of this effluent. The effectiveness was confirmed using wastewater from different origins with different chemical characteristics. A bacterial consortium composed by Serratia marcescens CCMA 1010 and CCMA 1012, Corynebacterium flavescens CCMA 1006, and Acetobacter indonesiensis CCMA 1002 was selected as the inoculums-based phenotypic assays. The mixed inoculum showed a highly active population (11.18 log CFU mL^-1), promoting an 85% decrease in biochemical oxygen demand and a 60% decrease in chemical oxygen demand. There was also an 80% reduction in phosphorus and nitrogen. The final pH changed from 6.0 to 7.5. Additionally, the eco-toxicity using Daphnia similis was reduced by more than 59%. The microbial inoculum was efficient in the biological treatment in CPWWs, demonstrating the efficiency and robustness of the selected strains, independent of the physico-chemical characteristics of wastewater.

The allelochemical trans-cinnamic acid stimulates salicylic acid production and galactose pathway in maize leaves: A potential mechanism of stress tolerance

In this study, the effects (5 days) of the secondary metabolite trans-cinnamic acid on maize leaves (Zea mays L.), through a physiological and an untargeted metabolomic approach, were evaluated. A reduction in leaf growth and development accompanied by a decrease in protein content was observed in treated seedlings. Besides, trans-cinnamic acid stimulated the photosynthetic machinery with a significant increment in pigment content (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids), a stimulation of the light adapted PSII efficiency (ɸ_II) as well as the chlorophyll a fluorescence (Y_NO), the apparent electron transport rate, and the regulated dissipation of the energy (Y_NPQ). By contrast, the dark adapted PSII parameter (Fv/Fm) was not affected suggesting that no physical damages to the antenna complex were caused by trans-cinnamic acid. These results suggested that maize seedlings were experiencing a stress but, at the same time, were able to cope with it. This hypothesis was confirmed by both the increment in benzoic and salicylic acids, important molecules involved in stress response, and the metabolomic results, which pointed out that the seedlings are directing their metabolism towards galactose production modulating its pathway, which is pivotal for the production of the antioxidant compound ascorbic acid (ASA). Indeed, in treated plants, a significant increment in total ASA content (28%) was observed. The results suggested that the main strategy adopted by plants to cope with trans-cinnamic-induced stress consisted in the modulation of their metabolism in order to increase the total ASA and carotenoids concentration, radical scavenging species.
