Controls of Sediment Nitrogen Dynamics in Tropical Coastal Lagoons

Dynamics of CO2, CH4, and N2O in Ria Formosa coastal lagoon (southwestern Iberia) and export to the Gulf of Cadiz

A first characterization of greenhouse gases had been carried out to study their role and impact in a productive transitional coastal system of the southern Portugal - Ria Formosa lagoon. To this purpose, the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and the concentration of dissolved CH4 and N2O have been measured. Two surveys were carried out during 2020, at low tide under typical conditions of Spring (March) and end of Summer (October). The samplings sites were distributed along the costal lagoon covering: i) inner areas with strong human impact (influence of different flows of treated wastewater discharges); and ii) main channels in connection with the main inlets to study the exchanges with the ocean. In general, the highest values of the three greenhouse gases were found at the inner studied areas, especially affected by the disposal of treated effluents from wastewater treatment plans, in October. The mean water - atmosphere fluxes of the CO2, CH4 and N2O are positive, showing that the study area acts as a source of these gases to the atmosphere. On the other hand, it was calculated a rough estimation of the three gases globally exported from Ria Formosa to the ocean, through the main six inlets to evaluate the magnitude of the supply of these gases from Ria Formosa to the adjacent ocean. The mean CO2, CH4 and N2O horizontal water fluxes exported from all the inlets of Ria Formosa to the Gulf of Cadiz for both seasons, during low water, are 8.7 ± 3.9 mmol m-2 s-1, 8.0 ± 3.5 μmol m-2 s-1 and 3.2 ± 1.5 μmol m-2 s-1, which corresponds to a mass transport through the inlets section of 0.7 ± 0.7 kg s-1, 0.2 ± 0.2 g s-1 and 0.2 ± 0.3 g s-1 respectively. From these estimates, as expected, the higher mass transport was found at the larger and deeper inlets (Faro-Olhão and Armona).

Benthic nitrate removal capacity in marine mangroves of Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles

Mangrove sediments are known to be potentially active reducing zones for nitrogen removal. The goal of this work was to investigate the potential for nitrate reduction in marine mangrove sediments along a canal impacted by anthropogenic activity (Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles). To this end, the effect of nitrate concentration, organic carbon load, and hydraulic retention time was assessed as factors affecting these nitrate reduction rates. Nitrate reduction potential was determined using flow-through reactors in marine mangrove sediments collected along "The Canal des Rotours" in Guadeloupe. Potential nitrate reduction rates, in the presence of indigenous organic carbon, generally increased upon increasing nitrate supply from around 120 nmol cm^-3 h^-1 (low nitrate) up to 378 nmol cm^-3 h^-1 (high nitrate). The potential for nitrate reduction increased significantly with the addition of mangrove leaves, whereas the addition of simple, easily degradable carbon (acetate) resulted in an almost fivefold increase in nitrate reduction rates (up to 748 nmol cm^-3  h^-1 ). The hydraulic retention time also had an impact on the nitrate reducing capacity due to an increased contact time between nitrate and the benthic microbial community. Marine mangrove sediments have a high potential to mitigate nitrogen pollution, mainly governed by the presence of large amounts of degradable carbon in the form of litter. The mangrove sediments from this Caribbean island, currently exposed to a small tidal effect, could increase their nitrate elimination capacities due to prolonged water retention via engineering.

Climate-induced salinization may lead to increased lake nitrogen retention

Salinization caused by climate change and nitrogen (N) pollution are both important environmental threats for inland lakes. However, evaluating their interactive effects continues to be challenging. Here, field observation and microcosmic experiments were conducted in six lakes of East Asia with the different salinity and climate characteristics, to explore the response of the key N cycle processes related to N fate to the climate-induced change in salinity. The results indicated that increased salinity inhibited denitrification, which was the outcome of two cumulative effects: the long-term microbial adaptation effect and the direct salinity stress. Whereas increased salinity had unsignificant or positive effects on dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium. It had caused that N retention capacity is relatively stronger in saline than freshwater lakes. Inland lakes are long-term basin-wide integrators of climatic conditions that drying (salinization) and wetting (desalination) with climate change. In semi-arid regions of East Asia, lake shrinkage, salinization and increasing temperature driven by climate warming and drying may exert a negative impact on N pollution through concentrating, decreasing denitrification and increasing ammonium release from sediment. The threat of climate change on these lakes is not just the quantity of water, but its quality.

Nitrogen dynamic in vitro using sludge of a sewage stabilization pond from Patagonia (Argentina)

A relevant and current aspect of wastewater treatment systems is related to the processes of the nitrogen cycle that results in its elimination in gaseous forms. In the present study, we report the first measurements of nitrate-reducing rate (NRR) at lab-scale, using the flow-through reactor technique with sludge of a sewage stabilization pond system located in Patagonia (Argentina). Sludge was collected from Inlet and Outlet areas, in winter and summer. The sludge was characterized by having high moisture content (>94%) and organic matter concentration greater than 37%. The nitrate reduction experimental dates fitted significantly to the Michaelis-Menten model, allowing the estimation of the parameters that regulate the NR kinetics. The maximum potential nitrate reduction rate (Rmax) showed great variability, registering a maximum of 131.6 μmol-N·gdw-1·h-1 (Outlet-Summer) and a minimum of 4.1 μmol-N·gdw-1·h-1 (Inlet-Winter). The lowest half saturation constant (Km) was recorded in the Inlet sludge during the winter (6.1 mg N-NO3-·L-1), which indicates a greater affinity for nitrate of this bacterial consortium. An unusually high activity of NR was registered, being higher with sludge from the Outlet zone and with summer temperature. In full-scale ponds, the NR activity could explain a relevant part of the nitrogen removal that involves the escape of gaseous forms.
