The Characteristics of Air Pollutants during Two Distinct Episodes of Fireworks Burning in a Valley City of North China

Analysis on the Characteristics of Air Pollution in China during the COVID-19 Outbreak

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a serious global threat to human health. In China, the government immediately implemented lockdown measures to curb the spread of this virus. These measures severely affected transportation and industrial production across the country, resulting in a significant change in the concentration of air pollutants. In this study, the Euclidean distance method was used to select the most similar meteorological field during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Changes in the concentration of air pollutants in China were analyzed under similar meteorological background conditions. Results indicate that, compared with data from 2015–2019, air quality in China significantly improved; with the exception of ozone (O3), the concentration of major air pollutants declined. Compared with baseline conditions, the reduction of air pollutants in China from 25 January to 22 February 2020 (Period 2) was the most significant. In particular, NO2 decreased by 41.7% in the Yangtze River Delta. In Period 2, the reduction of air pollutants in areas other than Hubei gradually decreased, but the reduction of NO2 in Wuhan reached 61.92%, and the reduction of air pollutants in various regions after February 23 was significantly reduced. By excluding the influence of meteorological factors and calculating the contribution of human activities to atmospheric pollutants by linear fitting, in Period 2 the effect of artificial controls on NO2 in Wuhan attained 30.66%, and reached 48.17% from 23 February to 23 March (Period 3). Results from this investigation provides effective theoretical support for pollution prevention and control in China.

Air pollution during New Year's fireworks and daily mortality in the Netherlands

Short-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with cardiovascular and respiratory mortality and morbidity. Little is known about associations between air pollution caused by firework events and daily mortality. We investigated whether particulate matter from fireworks during New Year’s celebrations was associated with daily mortality. We analyzed the celebrations of the years 1995–2012. PM₁₀ concentrations increased dramatically during the firework events. Countrywide, the daily average PM₁₀ concentrations from 27–30 December was 29 μg/m³ and increased during the first hour of the New Year by 277 μg/m³. In the more densely populated areas of the Netherlands the increase was even steeper, 598 μg/m³ in the first hour of the New Year. No consistent associations were found using linear regression models between PM₁₀ concentrations during the first six hours of 1 January and daily mortality in the general population. Yet, using a case-crossover analysis firework-days and PM₁₀ concentrations were associated with daily mortality. Therefore, in light of the contradictory results obtained with the different statistical analyses, we recommend further epidemiological research on the health effects of exposure to firework emissions.

Spatial and Temporal Variations of Six Criteria Air Pollutants in Fujian Province, China

Air pollution has become a critical issue in the urban areas of southeastern China in recent years. A complete understanding of the tempo-spatial characteristics of air pollution can help the public and governmental bodies manage their lives and work better. In this study, data for six criteria air pollutants (including particulate matter (PM_2.5, PM₁₀), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and ozone (O₃)) from 37 sites in nine major cities within Fujian Province, China were collected between January 2015 to December 2016, and analyzed. We analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of these six criteria pollutants, as well as the attainment rates, and identified what were the major pollutants. Our results show that: (1) the two-year mean values of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ exceeded the Chinese National Ambient Air Quality Standard (CAAQS) standard I levels, whereas other air pollutants were below the CAAQS standard I; (2) the six criteria air pollutants show spatial variations (i.e. most air pollutants were higher in the city center areas, followed by suburban areas and exurban areas, except for O₃; and the concentrations of PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, O₃ were higher in coastal cities than in inland cities); (3) seasonal variations and the no attainment rates of air pollutants were found to be higher in cold seasons and lower in warm seasons, except for O₃; (4) the most frequently present air pollutant was PM₁₀, with PM_2.5 and O₃ being the second and third most frequent, respectively; (5) all the air pollutants, except O₃, showed positive correlations with each other. These results provide additional information for the effective control of air pollution in the province of Fujian.

Estimates of air pollution in Delhi from the burning of firecrackers during the festival of Diwali

Delhi has had the distinction of being one of the most polluted cities in the world, especially in the winter months from October—January. These months coincide with the religious festival of Diwali. It is argued that air quality gets worse in the aftermath of Diwali on account of firecrackers that get burned during the festival. We use hourly data on PM 2.5 particulate concentration from 2013 to 2017 to estimate the Diwali effect on air quality in Delhi. We improve on existing work by using the event study technique as well as a difference-in-difference regression framework to estimate the Diwali effect on air quality. The results suggest that Diwali leads to a small, but statistically significant increase in air pollution. The effect is different across locations within Delhi. To our knowledge, this is the first causal estimate of the contribution of Diwali firecracker burning to air pollution.

Exposure to fine particulate matter during pregnancy and risk of term low birth weight in Jinan, China, 2014-2016

BACKGROUND

Existing studies exploring the association between low birth weight (LBW) and maternal fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter<2.5μm, PM_2.5) exposure have presented equivocal results, and one of the possible reasons for this finding might be due to relatively low maternal exposures. In addition, relatively narrow maternal exposure windows to PM_2.5 have not been well established for LBW.

METHODS

We employed a nested matched case-control design among 43,855 term births in a large maternity and child care hospital in Jinan, China. A total of 369 cases were identified, and four controls per case matched by maternal age were randomly selected among those with normal birth weight (n=1,476) from 2014 to 2016. Ambient air monitoring data on continuous measures of PM_2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) (24-h average concentrations) from 2013 to 2016 were collected from thirteen local monitoring stations. An inverse distance weighting method based on both home and work addresses was adopted to estimate the individual daily exposures to these air pollutants during pregnancy by weighting the average of the twelve nearest monitoring stations within 30km of each 100m×100m grid cell by an inverse squared distance, and then the average exposure concentrations for gestational months, trimesters and the entire pregnancy were calculated. Adjusted conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) per 10μg/m³ increment in PM_2.5 and by PM_2.5 quartiles during different gestational periods.

RESULTS

In this study, the estimated mean values of PM_2.5, NO₂, and SO₂ exposure during the entire pregnancy were 88.0, 54.6, and 63.1μg/m³, respectively. Term low birth weight (TLBW) increased in association with per 10μg/m³ increment in PM_2.5 for the 8th month [OR=1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04, 1.22], the 9th month (OR=1.06, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.15), the third trimester (OR=1.17, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.29), and the entire pregnancy (OR=1.38, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.77) in models adjusted for one pollutant (PM_2.5). In models categorizing the PM_2.5 exposure by quartiles, comparing the second, third, and highest with the lowest PM_2.5 exposure quartile, the PM_2.5 was positively associated with TLBW during the 8th month (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.88; OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.03, 3.04; OR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.04, 3.55, respectively) and for the 9th month, only association for exposure in the third versus the lowest quartile was significant (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.02, 3.58).

CONCLUSIONS

The study provides evidence that exposure to PM_2.5 during pregnancy might be associated with the risk of TLBW in the context of very high pollution level of PM_2.5, and the 8th and 9th months were identified as potentially relevant exposure windows.
