A Double-Blinded, Randomized Comparison of Medetomidine-Tiletamine-Zolazepam and Dexmedetomidine-Tiletamine-Zolazepam Anesthesia in Free-Ranging Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos)

IMMOBILIZATION OF MOUFLON (OVIS ORIENTALIS MUSIMON) USING MEDETOMIDINE-KETAMINE-MORPHINE OR DEXMEDETOMIDINE-KETAMINE-MORPHINE

This study is aimed at evaluating the efficacy of two protocols for the immobilization of mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon). Six mouflon were immobilized twice using IM medetomidine 0.07 ± 0.01 mg/kg, ketamine 2.88 ± 0.48 mg/kg, and morphine 0.57 ± 0.09 mg/kg (MKM) or dexmedetomidine 0.04 ± 0.01 mg/kg, ketamine 3.01 ± 0.6 mg/kg, and morphine 0.60 ± 0.12 mg/kg (DKM). Anesthetic times were recorded from injection to initial drug effects, sternal recumbency, lateral recumbency, unresponsiveness to external stimuli, and recovery following atipamezole IM administration. Cardiopulmonary variables (HR in beats/min, RR in breaths/min, mean, systolic, and diastolic noninvasive blood pressure [MAP, SAP, DAP] in mm Hg, oxygen hemoglobin saturation [SpO₂)], expired end tidal carbon dioxide [P_ECO₂]), and rectal temperature in °C were monitored and recorded. No statistically significant differences were detected between protocols at any time point and no significant differences were detected in any measured variables at any time point between protocols. However, a significant decrease in the noninvasive blood pressure variables (SAP, MAP, and DAP) and in the RR were detected over time. Both chemical immobilization protocols provided at least 50 min of immobilization in mouflon, allowing minor procedures and tracheal intubation.

Cardiorespiratory effects of medetomidine and dexmedetomidine combined with tiletamine-zolazepam for the immobilization of Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) under isoflurane general anesthesia

The aim of this paper was to compare the cardiorespiratory effects of the two combinations (medetomidine-tiletamine-zolazepam (MTZ) or dexmedetomidine-tiletamine-zolazepam (DTZ)) used for Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) immobilization. A retrospective analysis was carried out, reviewing the anesthetic records of captive bears. Sixty-six records were reviewed. The bears were immobilized, and general anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane vaporized in 100% oxygen. The mean sedation time and score were evaluated. The cardiorespiratory parameters were recorded every 10 minutes from intubation until extubation. Mean sedation time was 26.1 ± 14.5 minutes for the MTZ group and 25.6 ± 19.4 minutes for the DTZ group. The heart rate and the respiratory rate were higher in the bears immobilized with DTZ (66 ± 19 beats/min; 13 ± 5.2 breaths/min) as compared with the bears immobilized with MTZ (57 ± 14.5 beats/min; 10 ± 4.7 breaths/min) whereas the mean arterial pressure did not differ significantly between the groups. The body temperature was in the normal range throughout the procedures in all bears (MTZ 36.3 ± 0.9°C; DTZ 37 ± 1°C). In conclusion, the two protocols used in this study have been proven to be safe and reliable for the immobilization of Asiatic black bears, and the DTZ combination seemed to be associated with less cardiorespiratory depression than the MTZ one.

CAPTURE AND IMMOBILIZATION OF AFRICAN WOLVES ( CANIS LUPASTER) IN THE ETHIOPIAN HIGHLANDS

:  We captured 14 individual African wolves ( Canis lupaster) a total of 16 times in the Ethiopian Highlands in April 2015 and March 2016 by using rubber-lined foothold traps and immobilized them with dexmedetomidine-ketamine. Traps were baited with sheep meat and surveyed every 2 h. Capture efficiency (number of captures per number of visits) was 0.94, and capture rate (number of captures per number of trap nights) was 0.24. Trapped wolves were immobilized with 0.025 mg/kg dexmedetomidine and 8-10 mg/kg ketamine on the basis of respective estimated body mass. Mean (SD) induction times were 3.4 (0.5) min for subadults ( n=4), 3.5 (0.3) min for adult males ( n=4), and 4.7 (1.0) min for adult females ( n=6). Inductions were calm, muscle relaxation was good, and all animals were completely immobilized. Apart from increased rectal temperatures, no major negative side effects were observed. Atipamezole at 10 mg intramuscularly per milligram of dexmedetomidine administered was used for reversal at a mean of 43.5 (7.7) min after administration of dexmedetomidine-ketamine. Recoveries were relatively smooth, and animals were on feet, leaving the site within a mean of 13.6 (3.9) min, after atipamezole administration. Our results indicate that African wolves can be safely captured and immobilized by using rubber-lined foothold traps and dexmedetomidine and ketamine.
