Communication consumes 35 times more energy than computation in the human cortex, but both costs are needed to predict synapse number

Darwinian evolution tends to produce energy-efficient outcomes. On the other hand, energy limits computation, be it neural and probabilistic or digital and logical. Taking a particular energy-efficient viewpoint, we define neural computation and make use of an energy-constrained computational function. This function can be optimized over a variable that is proportional to the number of synapses per neuron. This function also implies a specific distinction between adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-consuming processes, especially computation per se vs. the communication processes of action potentials and transmitter release. Thus, to apply this mathematical function requires an energy audit with a particular partitioning of energy consumption that differs from earlier work. The audit points out that, rather than the oft-quoted 20 W of glucose available to the human brain, the fraction partitioned to cortical computation is only 0.1 W of ATP [L. Sokoloff, Handb. Physiol. Sect. I Neurophysiol. 3, 1843-1864 (1960)] and [J. Sawada, D. S. Modha, "Synapse: Scalable energy-efficient neurosynaptic computing" in Application of Concurrency to System Design (ACSD) (2013), pp. 14-15]. On the other hand, long-distance communication costs are 35-fold greater, 3.5 W. Other findings include 1) a [Formula: see text]-fold discrepancy between biological and lowest possible values of a neuron's computational efficiency and 2) two predictions of N, the number of synaptic transmissions needed to fire a neuron (2,500 vs. 2,000).

Estimating the Parameters of Fitzhugh-Nagumo Neurons from Neural Spiking Data

A theoretical and computational study on the estimation of the parameters of a single Fitzhugh-Nagumo model is presented. The difference of this work from a conventional system identification is that the measured data only consist of discrete and noisy neural spiking (spike times) data, which contain no amplitude information. The goal can be achieved by applying a maximum likelihood estimation approach where the likelihood function is derived from point process statistics. The firing rate of the neuron was assumed as a nonlinear map (logistic sigmoid) relating it to the membrane potential variable. The stimulus data were generated by a phased cosine Fourier series having fixed amplitude and frequency but a randomly shot phase (shot at each repeated trial). Various values of amplitude, stimulus component size, and sample size were applied to examine the effect of stimulus to the identification process. Results are presented in tabular and graphical forms, which also include statistical analysis (mean and standard deviation of the estimates). We also tested our model using realistic data from a previous research (H1 neurons of blowflies) and found that the estimates have a tendency to converge.

Cortical reliability amid noise and chaos

Typical responses of cortical neurons to identical sensory stimuli appear highly variable. It has thus been proposed that the cortex primarily uses a rate code. However, other studies have argued for spike-time coding under certain conditions. The potential role of spike-time coding is directly limited by the internally generated variability of cortical circuits, which remains largely unexplored. Here, we quantify this internally generated variability using a biophysical model of rat neocortical microcircuitry with biologically realistic noise sources. We find that stochastic neurotransmitter release is a critical component of internally generated variability, causing rapidly diverging, chaotic recurrent network dynamics. Surprisingly, the same nonlinear recurrent network dynamics can transiently overcome the chaos in response to weak feed-forward thalamocortical inputs, and support reliable spike times with millisecond precision. Our model shows that the noisy and chaotic network dynamics of recurrent cortical microcircuitry are compatible with stimulus-evoked, millisecond spike-time reliability, resolving a long-standing debate.

Linearization of excitatory synaptic integration at no extra cost

In many theories of neural computation, linearly summed synaptic activation is a pervasive assumption for the computations performed by individual neurons. Indeed, for certain nominally optimal models, linear summation is required. However, the biophysical mechanisms needed to produce linear summation may add to the energy-cost of neural processing. Thus, the benefits provided by linear summation may be outweighed by the energy-costs. Using voltage-gated conductances in a relatively simple neuron model, this paper quantifies the cost of linearizing dendritically localized synaptic activation. Different combinations of voltage-gated conductances were examined, and many are found to produce linearization; here, four of these models are presented. Comparing the energy-costs to a purely passive model, reveals minimal or even no additional costs in some cases.
