Abstract
OBJECTIVE A meta-analysis was performed to assess the epidemiological correlation between dietary intake of various types of vitamin intake and the risk of periodontal disease. METHODS A comprehensive computerized search was conducted in eight databases, namely PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine Disc, CNKI, VIP, and WanFang Database, and a random effect model was applied to combine pooled odds ratio (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the included studies, and the sensitivity analysis was performed to explore the impact of a single study on the comprehensive results. RESULTS We finally included 45 effect groups from 23 observational studies, with a total number of study participants of 74,488. The results showed that higher levels of vitamin A (OR: 0.788, 95% CI: 0.640-0.971), vitamin B complex (OR: 0.884, 95% CI: 0.824-0.948), vitamin C (OR: 0.875, 95% CI: 0.775-0.988), vitamin D (OR: 0.964, 95% CI: 0.948-0.981), and vitamin E (OR: 0.868, 95% CI: 0.776-0.971) intake all were negatively correlated with periodontal disease. After removing each study, leave-one-out sensitivity analysis indicated no significant change in the overall results of any of the five meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS The results from this meta-analysis demonstrated a negative association between high-dose vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E consumption and the likelihood of developing periodontal disease, revealing the significant role of vitamins in preventing periodontal disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE Thermal inhalation injury is a common, life-threatening problem in burned patients. Whether or not this single event of damage to the oral integrity causes long term health problems is yet to be examined. MATERIAL AND METHODS All consecutive burn patients between 2014 and 2017 of Marienhospital Stuttgart (MHS), Germany, with at least 10% of burned skin surface were included and compared. The Periodontal Screening Index as well as Vitamin D levels were examined. Vitamin D has been suspected to contribute to the genesis of periodontitis. Risk factors and subjective oral life quality were prompted. RESULTS We included a total of 32 patients, 15 of which had an inhalation injury in their medical history. Risk factors were examined via Renatus' questionnaire. While risk factors were equally distributed in both groups we saw a remarkable difference in periodontal integrity, with the Periodontal Screening Index (PSI) per sextant differing drastically (with inhalation injury: 2.40, without inhalation injury: 1.10, p < 0.001). Patients with an inhalation injury had a mean of 5.2 out of 6 possible sextants with a pathologic PSI (with the median being 6/6), while patients without an inhalation injury had a mean of 1.83 out of 6 (median: 1/6), p < 0.001. The oral health impact profile showed a difference as well, albeit without statistical significance (with inhalation injury: median = 11, without: median = 3.5, p = 0.414). A correlation between Serum Vitamin D levels and periodontal integrity could not be seen in this group. CONCLUSION Inhalation injury is a possible cause for periodontitis and hence impacts the quality of life of burned patients.

Abstract
There have been numerous publications investigating the relationship between periodontitis (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) so far. This publication presents the common risk factors for the development of PD and RA. The major impact of the pathological bacterial factor and cigarette smoking with chronic inflammation playing the key role in both diseases has been confirmed by numerous studies in various populations over the years. More research focuses nowadays also on the role of improper diet and obesity. Pathophysiological pathways, such as increased concentration of proinflammatory cytokines, indirectly affecting the cardiovascular complications and coagulation disorders, which has an impact on function disorders of tissue metalloproteinase inhibitors and the plasminogen activation system, were also researched. This systematic review of current literature has shown numerous discrepancies in previous analyses and the need for further detailed research on the relationship between periodontal status and RA.

Abstract
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of dental supporting tissues (gingiva, periodontal ligament, and bone) and it has been suggested as a possible etiology for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this systematic review, we aim to verify if periodontitis represents a risk factor for RA. Electronic databases were consulted until March 2018 considering eligibility criteria focusing on: (P, participants) adults; (E, exposure) with periodontitis; (C, comparison) without periodontitis; and (O, outcome) development of RA. Quality assessment of studies and risk-of-bias evaluation were also performed. To undertake a quantitative analysis, the number of persons with RA and a total number of participants for the case group (with periodontitis) and control group (without periodontitis) were used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 3888 articles were identified, and nine studies were considered eligible. Seven of 9 articles suggested an association among diseases by the common pro-inflammatory profiles. The pooled analysis of 3 articles showed a higher RA prevalence for persons with periodontitis (n = 1177) than controls (n = 254) (OR 1.97; CI 1.68–2.31; p < 0.00001). However, considerable heterogeneity among studies was verified (I2 = 96%, p < 0.00001). Periodontitis may represent a risk factor for RA by heredity, bacterial infection, and the pro-inflammatory profile shared between both diseases. Although most of the elective studies report an association between periodontitis and RA, the quantitative analysis showed a high heterogeneity, leading to the need for further studies.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of, and the factors associated with, periodontal disease in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods: Patients with RA enrolled in the Institute of Rheumatology Rheumatoid Arthritis (IORRA) cohort completed three self-administered questionnaires including questions about recent gingival bleeding during toothbrushing, a recent diagnosis of periodontitis by a dentist, and any history of periodontitis. Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate associations with clinical variables for each questionnaire.Results: Among 5600 Japanese patients with RA, 31.0%, 18.3%, and 20.4% of patients self-reported recent gingival bleeding during toothbrushing, a recent diagnosis of periodontitis by a dentist, and a history of periodontitis, respectively. In multivariate models, younger age, fracture history, Japanese Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (JHAQ-DI), and prednisolone dosage were significantly (p < .05) associated with recent gingival bleeding during toothbrushing. Older age, female gender, and ever-smoker status were significantly correlated with a recent diagnosis of periodontitis.Conclusion: Many Japanese patients with RA experience gingival bleeding during toothbrushing and are diagnosed with periodontitis. Age, female gender, ever-smoker status, fracture history, JHAQ-DI, and prednisolone dosage appeared to be associated with periodontal disease in Japanese patients with RA.
