Why the power of diversity does not always produce better groups and societies

Diversity is supposed to create better groups and societies but sometimes fails. It is explained why the power of diversity may not create better groups in the current diversity prediction theory. Diversity may hurt civic life and introduce distrust. This is because the current diversity prediction theory is based on real numbers that ignore individual abilities. Its diversity prediction theory maximizes performance with infinite population size. Contrary to this, collective intelligence or swarm intelligence is not maximized by infinite population size, but by population size. The extended diversity prediction theory using the complex number allows us to express individual abilities or qualities. The diversity of complex numbers always produces better groups and societies. The wisdom of crowds, collective intelligence, swarm intelligence or nature-inspired intelligence is implemented in the current machine learning or artificial intelligence, called Random Forest. The problem of the current diversity prediction theory is detailed in this paper.

An Adaptationist Framework to Examine Intergroup Contact

Background

Many culturally-plural societies like Canada or Russia seek ways to manage their cultural diversity in order to promote harmony among coexisting groups. The social sciences have long viewed intergroup contact as a beneficial intervention to achieve such harmony.

Objective

This paper proposes an adaptationist framework within which to explain how and why intergroup contact contributes to the positive and negative outcomes for individuals who live together in a plural society. We employed this framework in a case study that may serve as an example of the conceptualization and analysis of these issues in international research. Its structural framework included both positive and negative contact and the role of this contact in the distribution of intercultural and psychological adaptation among a large representative sample of the Canadian population.

Design

We used a correlational design with a representative sample of Canadians from a survey carried out by Environics in 2019, which was stratified according to the most current population statistics. The total sample was 3,111 persons age 18 and over and included the largest racialised groups in the country.

Results

Our main finding was that intergroup contact (both positive and negative) related to both psychological and intercultural adaptation. These findings have implications for improving intercultural relations, especially through the role of positive contact.

Conclusion

The experience of negative contact (e.g., discrimination) in the near term is an important factor in undermining both forms of adaptation. Nonetheless, while intergroup contact can bring both positive and negative experiences during intercultural interactions, it leads to mutual adaptation over time.

Intergroup Contact Alleviates Loneliness: The Extensive Effect of Common Ingroup Identity

Purpose

Previous studies show that intergroup contact, through common ingroup identity, has impact on intergroup processes such as reducing intergroup bias, improving intergroup relations, etc. The effect of intergroup contact on individual psychological process (through common ingroup identity), however, needs further exploration. Based on the positive effect of both intergroup contact and ingroup identification on mental health and well-being, this article proposes and tests a new model of individual loneliness reduction through intergroup contact by promoting common ingroup identity.

Methods

A total of 263 majority ethnic members and 275 minority ethnic members from China participated in the survey. Intergroup contact, common ingroup identity and loneliness were measured at three time-points (T1-T3) over an 8-month period. Longitudinal mediation analysis and parallel process Latent Growth Curve Model for mediation are used for the examination of the indirect effect of common ingroup identity.

Results

Longitudinal mediation analysis showed that intergroup contact quality at T1 positively predicted common ingroup identity at T2, and common ingroup identity at T2 alleviated loneliness at T3. Intergroup contact quality at T1 was indirectly linked to loneliness at T3 via common ingroup identity at T2. The parallel process latent growth curve model for mediation confirmed the robustness of the indirect effect of common ingroup identity. In addition, the growth rate of the quality of intergroup contact increased the growth rate of common ingroup identity, but reduced the growth rate of loneliness.

Conclusion

The current study revealed the protectiveness of intergroup contact and common ingroup identity on loneliness, viz., intergroup contact reduces individual loneliness by promoting common ingroup identity, the implication being that intergroup contact and common ingroup identity should be taken into account in intervening process of loneliness prevention so that an individual's physical and mental health could be better safeguarded.

Ramadan: the month of fasting for muslim and social cohesion-mapping the unexplored effect

For Muslims, Ramadan is a month in which the fasting ritual is observed and interpreted as an event for fostering social cohesion. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between mechanical solidarity and social cohesion mediated by generosity during Ramadan. The relationships between variables were tested through PLS-SEM using data collected from 600 respondents located separately in Yogyakarta and West Sumatra. The finding showed that mechanical solidarity and social cohesion are more significant when mediated by generosity. In practice, the dimensions of charity (alms and infaq) strengthen mechanical solidarity, i.e., collective consciousness and cooperation spirit, to influence social cohesion. Furthermore, generosity activities supported mechanical solidarity in strengthening the social cohesion among Muslims in Yogyakarta and West Sumatra, Indonesia. The elaboration on the factors accelerating social cohesion is an important issue for social and religious studies. It is useful for transforming the dimensions of Islamic rituals into social impacts and determining harmony between religious communities in the future.

Social Trust and Anti-immigrant Attitudes in Europe: A Longitudinal Multi-Level Analysis

Research investigating how social conditions influence attitudes about immigrants has focused primarily on demographic and economic factors as potential threat inducing contexts that lead to anti-immigrant sentiment. However, the empirical evidence supporting this link is mixed, while social cohesion indicators such as the influence of social trust, have largely been left unexamined. This article uses the European Social Survey (2002-2016) to test how differences in social trust, both within and between countries influence attitudes about immigrants. Results from longitudinal analyses show that countries with higher levels of social trust have more favorable attitudes toward immigrants, and while changes in social trust over time are small, they result in comparably large changes in anti-immigrant attitudes, even when controlling for other social factors. These results are robust across different model specifications and data sources.

Comparing the effect of cross-group friendship on generalized trust to its effect on prejudice: The mediating role of threat perceptions and negative affect

Intergroup relations theory posits that cross-group friendship reduces threat perceptions and negative emotions about outgroups. This has been argued to mitigate the negative effects of ethnic diversity on generalized trust. Yet, direct tests of this friendship-trust relation, especially including perceptions of threat and negative affect as mediators, have remained rare at the individual level. In this article, we bridge this research gap using representative data from eight European countries (Group-Focused Enmity). We employ structural equation modelling (SEM) to model mediated paths of cross-group friendship on generalized trust via perceptions of threat and negative affect. We find that both the total effect as well as the (mediated) total indirect effect of cross-group friendship on generalized trust are weak when compared with similar paths estimated for prejudice.
