Turbulent particle pair diffusion: A theory based on local and non-local diffusional processes

The initiation of shear band formation in deformed metallic glasses from soft localized domains

It has long been thought that shear band (SB) formation in amorphous solids initiates from relatively "soft" regions in the material in which large-scale non-affine deformations become localized. The test of this hypothesis requires an effective means of identifying "soft" regions and their evolution as the material is deformed to varying degrees, where the metric of "softness" must also account for the effect of temperature on local material stiffness. We show that the mean square atomic displacement on a caging timescale ⟨u²⟩, the "Debye-Waller factor," provides a useful method for estimating the shear modulus of the entire material and, by extension, the material stiffness at an atomic scale. Based on this "softness" metrology, we observe that SB formation indeed occurs through the strain-induced formation of localized soft regions in our deformed metallic glass free-standing films. Unexpectedly, the critical strain condition for SB formation occurs when the softness (⟨u²⟩) distribution within the emerging soft regions approaches that of the interfacial region in its undeformed state, initiating an instability with similarities to the transition to turbulence. Correspondingly, no SBs arise when the material is so thin that the entire material can be approximately described as being "interfacial" in nature. We also quantify relaxation in the glass and the nature and origin of highly non-Gaussian particle displacements in the dynamically heterogeneous SB regions at times longer than the caging time.

Innovative Mini Ultralight Radioprobes to Track Lagrangian Turbulence Fluctuations within Warm Clouds: Electronic Design

Characterization of dynamics inside clouds remains a challenging task for weather forecasting and climate modeling as cloud properties depend on interdependent natural processes at micro- and macro-scales. Turbulence plays an important role in particle dynamics inside clouds; however, turbulence mechanisms are not yet fully understood partly due to the difficulty of measuring clouds at the smallest scales. To address these knowledge gaps, an experimental method for measuring the influence of small-scale turbulence in cloud formation in situ and producing an in-field cloud Lagrangian dataset is being developed by means of innovative ultralight radioprobes. This paper presents the electronic system design along with the obtained results from laboratory and field experiments regarding these compact (diameter ≈30 cm), lightweight (≈20 g), and expendable devices designed to passively float and track small-scale turbulence fluctuations inside warm clouds. The fully customized mini-radioprobe board (5 cm × 5 cm) embeds sensors to measure local fluctuations and transmit data to the ground in near real time. The tests confirm that the newly developed probes perform well, providing accurate information about atmospheric turbulence as referenced in space. The integration of multiple radioprobes allows for a systematic and accurate monitoring of atmospheric turbulence and its impact on cloud formation.

Turbulent particle pair diffusion: Numerical simulations

A theory for turbulent particle pair diffusion in the inertial subrange [Malik NA, PLoS ONE 13(10):e0202940 (2018)] is investigated numerically using a Lagrangian diffusion model, Kinematic Simulations [Kraichnan RH, Phys. Fluids 13:22 (1970); Malik NA, PLoS ONE 12(12):e0189917 (2017)]. All predictions of the theory are observed in flow fields with generalised energy spectra of the type, E(k) ∼ k^−p. Most importantly, two non-Richardson regimes are observed: for short inertial subrange of size 10² the simulations yield quasi-local regimes for the pair diffusion coefficient, K(l)∼σl(1+p)/2; and for asymptotically infinite inertial subrange the simulations yield non-local regimes K(l)∼σlγ, with γ intermediate between the purely local scaling γ^l = (1 + p)/2 and the purely non-local scaling γ^nl = 2. For intermittent turbulence spectra, E(k) ∼ k^−1.72, the simulations yield K∼σl1.556, in agreement with the revised 1926 dataset K∼σl1.564 [Richardson LF, Proc. Roy. Soc. Lond. A 100:709 (1926); Malik NA, PLoS ONE 13(10):e0202940 (2018)]. These results lend support to the physical picture proposed in the new theory that turbulent diffusion in the inertial subrange is governed by both local and non-local diffusion transport processes.
