Phenology of Trichodesmium spp. blooms in the Great Barrier Reef lagoon, Australia, from the ESA-MERIS 10-year mission

Distinct Peaks of UV-Absorbing Compounds in CDOM and Particulate Absorption Spectra of Near-Surface Great Barrier Reef Coastal Waters, Associated with the Presence of Trichodesmium spp. (NE Australia)

Distinct absorption peaks, with maxima at around 328 nm and a shoulder at 360 nm, were observed in the UV region of the absorption spectra for both the particulate and dissolved fractions of water samples collected in Keppel Bay (NE Australia) during the presence of sporadic Trichodesmium colonies. The largest absorption coefficients for these peaks were observed in samples collected in the near-surface waters (top 2–3 cm). Values approximately 3.5–6 times greater for aCDOM(328) and 13–36 times greater for ap(328) were observed in the near-surface samples compared to those collected from the top 20 cm of the water column at the same sites. Similar UV-absorption peaks observed in other studies have been attributed to the presence of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). Increased UV absorption can affect both the magnitude of the absorption coefficients in the blue end of the visible region and the spectral slope of the exponential model commonly used to describe the CDOM absorption coefficient. This, in turn, can significantly affect the accuracy of satellite retrieved estimates of ocean colour products related to CDOM and particulate absorption coefficients. In tropical waters where Trichodesmium blooms are prevalent, regional ocean colour algorithms need to be developed using in situ bio-optical measurements from both the UV and visible regions of the spectra.

A Machine Learning Algorithm for Himawari-8 Total Suspended Solids Retrievals in the Great Barrier Reef

Remote sensing of ocean colour has been fundamental to the synoptic-scale monitoring of marine water quality in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). However, ocean colour sensors onboard low orbit satellites, such as the Sentinel-3 constellation, have insufficient revisit capability to fully resolve diurnal variability in highly dynamic coastal environments. To overcome this limitation, this work presents a physics-based coastal ocean colour algorithm for the Advanced Himawari Imager onboard the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite. Despite being designed for meteorological applications, Himawari-8 offers the opportunity to estimate ocean colour features every 10 min, in four broad visible and near-infrared spectral bands, and at 1 km2 spatial resolution. Coupled ocean–atmosphere radiative transfer simulations of the Himawari-8 bands were carried out for a realistic range of in-water and atmospheric optical properties of the GBR and for a wide range of solar and observation geometries. The simulated data were used to develop an inverse model based on artificial neural network techniques to estimate total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations directly from the Himawari-8 top-of-atmosphere spectral reflectance observations. The algorithm was validated with concurrent in situ data across the coastal GBR and its detection limits were assessed. TSS retrievals presented relative errors up to 75% and absolute errors of 2 mg L−1 within the validation range of 0.14 to 24 mg L−1, with a detection limit of 0.25 mg L−1. We discuss potential applications of Himawari-8 diurnal TSS products for improved monitoring and management of water quality in the GBR.

The marine nitrogen cycle: new developments and global change

The ocean is home to a diverse and metabolically versatile microbial community that performs the complex biochemical transformations that drive the nitrogen cycle, including nitrogen fixation, assimilation, nitrification and nitrogen loss processes. In this Review, we discuss the wealth of new ocean nitrogen cycle research in disciplines from metaproteomics to global biogeochemical modelling and in environments from productive estuaries to the abyssal deep sea. Influential recent discoveries include new microbial functional groups, novel metabolic pathways, original conceptual perspectives and ground-breaking analytical capabilities. These emerging research directions are already contributing to urgent efforts to address the primary challenge facing marine microbiologists today: the unprecedented onslaught of anthropogenic environmental change on marine ecosystems. Ocean warming, acidification, nutrient enrichment and seawater stratification have major effects on the microbial nitrogen cycle, but widespread ocean deoxygenation is perhaps the most consequential for the microorganisms involved in both aerobic and anaerobic nitrogen transformation pathways. In turn, these changes feed back to the global cycles of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. At a time when our species casts a lengthening shadow across all marine ecosystems, timely new advances offer us unique opportunities to understand and better predict human impacts on nitrogen biogeochemistry in the changing ocean of the Anthropocene.

Uptake of Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) by Natural Microbial Communities of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is a key organic sulfur compound that is produced by many phytoplankton and macrophytes and is ubiquitous in marine environments. Following its release into the water column, DMSP is primarily metabolised by heterotrophic bacterioplankton, but recent evidence indicates that non-DMSP producing phytoplankton can also assimilate DMSP from the surrounding environment. In this study, we examined the uptake of DMSP by communities of bacteria and phytoplankton within the waters of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia. We incubated natural GBR seawater with DMSP and quantified the uptake of DMSP by different fractions of the microbial community (>8 µm, 3-8 µm, <3 µm). We also evaluated how microbial community composition and the abundances of DMSP degrading genes are influenced by elevated dissolved DMSP levels. Our results showed uptake and accumulation of DMSP in all size fractions of the microbial community, with the largest fraction (>8 µm) forming the dominant sink, increasing in particulate DMSP by 44-115% upon DMSP enrichment. Longer-term incubations showed however, that DMSP retention was short lived (<24 h) and microbial responses to DMSP enrichment differed depending on the community carbon and sulfur demand. The response of the microbial communities from inside the reef indicated a preference towards cleaving DMSP into the climatically active aerosol dimethyl sulfide (DMS), whereas communities from the outer reef were sulfur and carbon limited, resulting in more DMSP being utilised by the cells. Our results show that DMSP uptake is shared across members of the microbial community, highlighting larger phytoplankton taxa as potentially relevant DMSP reservoirs and provide new information on sulfur cycling as a function of community metabolism in deeper, oligotrophic GBR waters.

Analysis of satellite imagery using a simple algorithm supports evidence that Trichodesmium supplies a significant new nitrogen load to the GBR lagoon

This work supports previous studies in the Great Barrier Reef lagoon that show the new nitrogen (N) load introduced by Trichodesmium is similar to or greater than that from riverine discharges. However, the current management programs aimed at improving the chronic eutrophic state of the GBR ignore the N load from Trichodesmium. These programs also ignore the evidence that Trichodesmium blooms could promote the bioavailability of heavy metals and be a source of toxins in the ciguatera food chain. Further work is urgently required to better quantify the potential impacts of Trichodesmium and develop management plans to reduce those impacts. A simple algorithm that uses MODIS imagery is developed for not only monitoring the spatial extent of Trichodesmium blooms but also for quantifying the concentration of those blooms. The algorithm is based on the readily available MODIS L2 data. A management plan that includes the harvesting of Trichodesmium is outlined.

To what extent can Ulva and Sargassum be detected and separated in satellite imagery?

Blooms of floating macroalgae have been reported around the world, among which are recurrent blooms of Ulva prolifera and Sargassum horneri in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. While satellite remote sensing has often been used to estimate their distributions and abundance as well as to trace their origins, because the algae mats are often much smaller than the size of an image pixel, it is unclear to what extent they can be detected and discriminated from each other in satellite imagery. Using data collected from laboratory experiments and by the Sentinel-3 OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument) and Sentinel-2 MSI (Multi Spectral Instrument) satellite instruments, we conduct simulated experiments to determine the lower detection limit and discrimination limit for these two macroalgae in different water environments and under different atmospheric conditions. For OLCI, the detection limit for both macroalgae is about 0.5% of a pixel, while the discrimination limit varies between 0.8% for clear water and 2% for turbid water. For MSI, the detection limit is about 2%, while the discrimination limit is about 6% for all water types. Below these two limits, detection and discrimination of macroalgae in these regions using the two sensors are subject to large uncertainties, thus requiring additional caution when interpreting algae areas and tracing algae origins.

Changing perspectives in marine nitrogen fixation

Nitrogen fixation, the reduction of atmospheric dinitrogen gas (N2) to ammonia, is critical for biological productivity but is difficult to study in the vast expanse of the global ocean. Decades of field studies and the infusion of molecular biological, genomic, isotopic, and geochemical modeling approaches have led to new paradigms and questions. The discovery of previously unknown N2-fixing (diazotrophic) microorganisms and unusual physiological adaptations, combined with diagnostic distributions of nutrients and their isotopes as well as measured and modeled biogeographic patterns, have revolutionized our understanding of marine N2 fixation and its role in the global nitrogen cycle. Anthropogenic upper-ocean warming, increased dissolved carbon dioxide, and acidification will affect the distribution and relative importance of specific subgroups of N2 fixers in the sea; these changes have implications for foodwebs and biogeochemical cycles.

Coral skeletons reveal the history of nitrogen cycling in the coastal Great Barrier Reef

Anthropogenic nutrient discharge to coastal marine environments is commonly associated with excessive algal growth and ecosystem degradation. However in the world's largest coral reef ecosystem, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), the response to enhanced terrestrial nutrient inputs since European settlement in the 1850's remains unclear. Here we use a 333 year old composite record (1680-2012) of ¹⁵N/¹⁴N in coral skeleton-bound organic matter to understand how nitrogen cycling in the coastal GBR has responded to increased anthropogenic nutrient inputs. Our major robust finding is that the coral record shows a long-term decline in skeletal ¹⁵N/¹⁴N towards the present. We argue that this decline is evidence for increased coastal nitrogen fixation rather than a direct reflection of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. Reducing phosphorus discharge and availability would short-circuit the nitrogen fixation feedback loop and help avoid future acute and chronic eutrophication in the coastal GBR.
