Abstract
This study investigated strategies based on the reconsolidation process to promote the strengthening effect of human motor memory. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of reactivating the memory of a newly acquired motor skill and performing interventions during its reconsolidation process on motor performance. Sixty healthy participants learned a new Sequential Visual Isometric Pinch Task - SVIPT during the first experimental session. In the second experimental session that was held on the same day, 6 h after session 1, the participants were divided into six different groups. In session 2, there were distinctions between the experimental groups concerning two issues: the presence or absence of a formal memory reactivation session characterized by the execution of repetitions of the learned motor task and the execution of different types of interventions after reactivation (training with the original, slightly modified, or moderately modified motor task). All groups performed the third session to retest the learned motor skill, 24 h after session 1. The results showed that using training with moderate task variability during memory reconsolidation provides greater motor skill performance gain when compared to repetitive training of the same learned task. Furthermore, performing a session exclusively dedicated to reactivation with the practice of the originally learned task was not a determining condition for recent motor memory reactivation, but rather the induction of prediction error during the reactivation.

Abstract
People show vast variability in skill performance and learning. What determines a person's individual performance and learning ability? In this study we explored the possibility to predict participants' future performance and learning, based on their behavior during initial skill acquisition. We recruited a large online multi-session sample of participants performing a sequential tapping skill learning task. We used machine learning to predict future performance and learning from raw data acquired during initial skill acquisition, and from engineered features calculated from the raw data. Strong correlations were observed between initial and final performance, and individual learning was not predicted. While canonical experimental tasks developed and selected to detect average effects may constrain insights regarding individual variability, development of novel tasks may shed light on the underlying mechanism of individual skill learning, relevant for real-life scenarios.

Abstract
We acquire perceptual skills through experience to adapt ourselves to the changing environment. Accomplishing an effective skill acquisition is a main purpose of perceptual learning research. Given the often observed learning effect specificity, multiple perceptual learnings with shared parameters could serve to improve the generalization of the learning effect. However, the interference between the overlapping memory traces of different learnings may impede this effort. Here, we trained human participants on an orientation discrimination task. We observed a proactive interference effect that the first training blocked the second training at its untrained location. This was a more pronounced effect than the well-known location specificity in perceptual learning. We introduced a short reactivation of the first training before the second training and successfully eliminated the proactive interference when the second training was inside the reconsolidation time window of the reactivated first training. Interestingly, we found that practicing an irrelevant task at the location of the second training immediately after the reactivation of the first training could also restore the effect of the second training but in a smaller magnitude, even if the second training was conducted outside of the reconsolidation window. We proposed a two-level mechanism of reactivation-induced memory integration to account for these results. The reactivation-based procedure could integrate either the previously trained and untrained locations or the two trainings at these locations, depending on the activated representations during the reconsolidation process. The findings provide us with new insight into the roles of long-term memory mechanisms in perceptual learning.

Abstract
Retrieving previously stored information makes memory traces labile again and can trigger restabilization in a strengthened or weakened form depending on the reactivation condition. Available evidence for long-term performance changes upon reactivation of motor memories and the effect of post-learning sleep on their consolidation remains scarce, and so does the data on the ways in which subsequent reactivation of motor memories interacts with sleep-related consolidation. Eighty young volunteers learned (Day 1) a 12-element Serial Reaction Time Task (SRTT) before a post-training Regular Sleep (RS) or Sleep Deprivation (SD) night, either followed (Day 2) by morning motor reactivation through a short SRTT testing or no motor activity. Consolidation was assessed after three recovery nights (Day 5). A 2 × 2 ANOVA carried on proportional offline gains did not evidence significant Reactivation (Morning Reactivation/No Morning Reactivation; p = 0.098), post-training Sleep (RS/SD; p = 0.301) or Sleep*Reactivation interaction (p = 0.257) effect. Our results are in line with prior studies suggesting a lack of supplementary performance gains upon reactivation, and other studies that failed to disclose post-learning sleep-related effects on performance improvement. However, lack of overt behavioural effects does not detract from the possibility of sleep- or reconsolidation-related covert neurophysiological changes underlying similar behavioural performance levels.

Abstract
How does the time of day of a practice session affect learning of a new motor sequence in the elderly? Participants practiced a given finger tapping sequence either during morning or evening hours. All participants robustly improved performance speed within the session concurrent with a reorganization of the tapping pattern of the sequence. However, evening-trained participants showed additional gains overnight and at 1 wk posttraining; moreover, evening training led to a further reorganization of the tapping pattern offline. A learning experience preceding nocturnal sleep can lead to a task-specific movement routine as an expression of novel “how to” knowledge in the elderly.

Abstract
Recently, an increasing interest in investigating interactions between brain regions using functional connectivity (FC) methods has shifted the initial focus of cognitive neuroimaging research from localizing functional circuits based on task activation to mapping brain networks based on intrinsic FC dynamics. Leveraging the advantages of the latter approach, it has been shown that despite primarily invariant intrinsic organization of the large-scale functional networks, interactions between and within these networks significantly differ between various behavioral and cognitive states. These differences presumably indicate transient reconfiguration of functional connections-an instantaneous process that flexibly mediates and calibrates human behavior according to momentary demands of the environment. Nevertheless, the specificity of these reconfigured FC patterns to the task at hand and their relevance to adaptive processes during learning remain elusive. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated (1) to what extent FC within the somatomotor network is reconfigured during motor skill practice, and (2) how these changes are related to learning. We applied a seed-driven FC approach to data collected during a continuous task-free condition, so-called resting state, and during a motor sequence learning task using functional magnetic resonance imaging. During the task, participants repeatedly performed a short five-element sequence with their non-dominant (left) hand. As predicted, such unimanual sequence production was associated with lateralized activation of the right somatomotor cortex (SMC). Using this "active" region as a seed, here we show that unimanual performance of the motor sequence relies on functional segregation between the two SMC and selective integration between the "active" SMC and supplementary motor area. Whereas, greater segregation between the two SMC was associated with gains in performance rate, greater segregation within the "active" SMC itself was associated with more consistent performance by the end of training. Nether the resting-state FC patterns within the somatomotor network nor their relative modulation by the task state predicted these behavioral benefits of learning. Our results suggest that task-induced FC changes reflect reconfiguration of the connectivity patterns within the somatomotor network rather than a simple amplification or silencing of its intrinsic dynamics. Such reconfiguration not only supports motor behavior but may also predict learning.
