Investigating the interplay of the hydrometeorological and seasonal forest vegetation role in regulating the nitrate flushing in a small torrential catchment

Forest vegetation is a very topical research subject as part of nature-based solutions for flood protection, soil erosion, water quality improvement, etc. However, limited capabilities of such measures are rarely investigated. Therefore, in this paper, study on the interplay of the hydrometeorological and seasonal forest vegetation role in regulating the nitrate‑nitrogen (NO₃-N) flushing from a forested, torrential catchment is presented. For the 43 identified rainfall events it was found that there are no statistically significant seasonal differences in NO₃-N concentrations; however, during baseflow conditions such differences were noted. The rainfall events were described by 17 hydro-meteorological and vegetation variables to investigate similarities between the events from the NO₃-N export point of view using clustering methods. Additionally, the relationship between explanatory and dependent variables, i.e. NO₃-N concentration and export variables, was modelled. In the models, the first four principal components were used as explanatory variables after the reduction of the initial number of variables. It was found that phenological phases as indicators of the forest vegetation seasonal activity are generally not able to considerably influence the NO₃-N concentration and flushing dynamics. The results indicate that during baseflow conditions, the influence of the forest vegetation in the torrential catchment becomes predominant. During rainfall events, the role of vegetation is blurred and might be generally considered as insignificant. The characteristics of rainfall events apparently exceed the limits of a forest's ability to control NO₃-N flushing. Given the pronounced impact of rainfall intensity on NO₃-N flushing, the challenge for the future will be to mitigate the potential negative effects of climate change related impacts, especially through measures able to reduce the intensity of rainfall-runoff formation. The seasonal role of vegetation in diminishing the intensity of nutrient flushing in natural torrential catchments might be relatively constrained and probably also overwhelmed by the hydrometeorological conditions.

Annual-scale assessment of mid-20th century anthropogenic impacts on the algal ecology of Crawford Lake, Ontario, Canada

Meromictic Crawford Lake, located in SW Ontario, Canada is characterized by varved sediments, making it suitable for high-resolution paleoecological studies. Freeze cores, the only coring method available that reliably preserves the fragile laminations representative of seasonal deposition in the lake, were used to document siliceous diatom and chrysophyte community structure at an annual resolution from 1930-1990CE. Stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis identified major assemblage changes that are believed to have been caused by local, regional and possibly global anthropogenic impacts. The assemblage changes within the siliceous algae are attributed to regional weather and increased industrial emissions and related effects of acid deposition on the lake's catchment associated with the Great Acceleration -the massive economic, industrial, and demographic expansion beginning in the mid-20th century. Observed increases in spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) in varved lake sediment dating to the early 1950s record rapidly expanding steel production without emission controls around 30 km upwind of the lake. The findings reported here reflect major changes in earth systems that the Anthropocene Working Group recommends for a proposed epoch to be termed the Anthropocene, providing support for the laminated sediments from Crawford Lake as a potential Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP).

Modelling of threats that affect Cyano-HABs in an eutrophicated reservoir: First phase towards water security and environmental governance in watersheds

Cyano-HABs are proliferating around the world due to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment of freshwater bodies. This study seeks to obtain a holistic vision over the various threats that affect the Cyano-HABs of Umia basin and especially of A Baxe reservoir (Galicia, NW Spain), through the method of Partial least squares path modelling (PLS-PM). The A Baxe reservoirs is a fundamental source of drinking water supply to surrounding dwellings. This study identifies and quantify the variables that increase contaminant concentration and decrease ecological integrity, as well as how this scenario evolved over various hydrologic years. In this regard, the PLS-PM equations will be robust and powerful tools to predict changes in eutrophication and ecological integrity, as response to measures implemented in the basin that can improve water quality. The dependent latent variables are "Eutrophication" (chlorophyl-a, Microcystis sp.) and "Ecological Integrity" (METI Bioindicator). The independent latent variables are "SWP", which represents surface water parameters (phosphorus, nitrogen and pH) and "Climatic Conditions" (temperature, precipitation). The PLS-PM results revealed that 51.0% of "Eutrophication" is predicted by the independent variables. The connections between latent variables are quantified through path coefficients (β). The "SWP" contributes by increasing "Eutrophication" (β = 0.235), the same occurring with the "Climatic Conditions" (β = -0.672). The variables "Eutrophication" (β = -0.217) and "SWP" (β = -0.483) lower the "Ecological Integrity". On the other hand, different trophic scenarios, adapted to the temperature increase predicted for the study area, were tested, and it was found that ecological integrity would improve by 46% if the oligotrophic state were reached. Therefore, it is recommended to prevent pollution by means of water control and governance plans, as well as corrective and preventive measures, which guarantee the water security of the river basins. Despite the complex mathematics behind the PLS-PM models, their user-friendly development and application through interactive graphical interfaces make them easily transposable to other eutrophic reservoirs, widening the readership of these studies focused on multiple-geosphere assessment of environmental impacts.

Effects of Hillslope Trenching on Surface Water Infiltration in Subalpine Forested Catchments

Concerns over freshwater scarcity for agriculture, ecosystems, and human consumption are driving the construction of infiltration trenches in many mountain protected areas. This study examines the effectiveness of infiltration trenches in a subalpine forested catchment in central Mexico, where public and private organizations have been constructing trenches for ~60 years. We rely on empirical data to develop rainfall-runoff models for two scenarios: a baseline (no trenches) and a trenched scenario. Field measurements of infiltration capacities in forested and trenched soils (n = 56) and two years of meteorological data are integrated into a semi-distributed runoff model of 28 trenched sub-catchments. Sensitivity analysis and hydrographs are used to evaluate differences in total runoff and infiltration between the two scenarios. Multiple logistic regression is used to evaluate the effects of environmental and management variables on the likelihood of runoff response and trench overtopping. The findings show that soil infiltration capacity and rainfall intensity are primary drivers of runoff and trench overtopping. However, trenches provided only a 1.2% increase in total infiltration over the two-year period. This marginal benefit is discussed in relation to the potential adverse environmental impacts of trench construction. Overall, our study finds that as a means of runoff harvesting in these forested catchments, trenches provide negligible infiltration benefits. As a result, this study cautions against further construction of infiltration trenches in forested catchments without careful ex ante assessment of rainfall-runoff relationships. The results of this study have important implications for forest water management in Mexico and elsewhere, where similar earthworks are employed to enhance runoff harvesting and surface water infiltration.
