Growth responses of eight wetland species to water level fluctuation with different ranges and frequencies

Water quality and wetland vegetation responses to water level variations in a university stormwater reuse reservoir: Nature-based approaches to campus water sustainability

In response to climate-driven water shortages, Duke University in 2014 constructed a water reuse reservoir and wetland complex (Pond) to capture urban stormwater and recycle water to provide campus cooling and reduce downstream loading of nutrients and sediment into Jordan Lake, a regional water supply. We postulated that even with significant water level changes due to withdrawals, the Pond would function to reduce downstream nutrients and sediment once wetland plants became established in the littoral zone. Throughout the project (2015-2021), baseflow nutrient concentrations downstream decreased, with Unfiltered Total Nitrogen (UTN) falling by 44 % and Unfiltered Total Phosphorus (UTP) by 50 %. Storm mean concentrations decreased by 31 % for UTN, 54 % for UTP, and 72 % for Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The annual reductions in mass fluxes (UTN, UTP, and TSS) were between 58 and 85 % across a range of storm intensities. Regardless of water level, temperature, pH, and oxygen concentrations downstream were not significantly changed. Between 2015 and 2020, a littoral survey of planted and naturally introduced species showed that wetter years resulted in a greater number of species across a gradient of three inundation zones (i.e., moist, wet, and aquatic). Conversely, dryer years resulted in fewer species across overlapping zones. The dominant plants that successfully colonized the Pond are all obligate wetland species despite the Pond's highly variable water depths and periods of inundation. The final plant populations were dominated by invasive native species supporting the self-design theory of plant succession as nearly half of the original planted species died. The reuse Pond design (pond-wetland complex) showed the capability of using stormwater runoff for campus cooling while improving water quality services and providing habitat for wetland plants. Thus, campuses with watershed runoff capture capability should consider a nature-based recycling approach as part of their water sustainability program.

Root vertical spatial stress: A method for enhancing rhizosphere effect of plants in subsurface flow constructed wetland

The depth of the substrate of subsurface flow (SSF) constructed wetlands (CWs) is closely related to their cost and operation stability. To explore the physiological regulation mechanism of wetland plants and pollutant removal potential of SSF CWs under "vertical spatial stress of roots" (by greatly reducing the depth of the substrate in SSF CWs to limit the vertical growth space of roots, VSSR), the physiological response and wetland purification effect of a 0.1 m Canna indica L. CW under VSSR were studied compared with conventional SSF CWs (0.6 m, 1.2 m). The results demonstrated that VSSR significantly enhanced the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration (p < 0.05) within the SSF CWs, with the DO in 0.1 m CW remaining stable at over 3 mg/L. Under the same hydraulic retention time (HRT), VSSR significantly improved the removal effect of pollutants (p < 0.05). The removal rates of COD, NH₄⁺-N, and total phosphorus (TP) remained above 87%, and the mean removal rates of total nitrogen (TN) reached 91.71%. VSSR promoted the morphological adaptation mechanisms of plants, such as significantly increased root-shoot ratio (p < 0.05), changed biomass allocation. Plants could maintain the stability of the photosynthetic mechanism by changing the distribution of light energy. The results of microbial community function prediction demonstrated that aerobic denitrification was the main mechanism of N transformation in the 0.1 m CW under VSSR. VSSR could induce the high root activity of plants, augment the concentration of root exudates, enhance the redox environment of the plant rhizosphere, further foster the enrichment of aerobic denitrifying bacteria, and strengthen the absorption efficiency of wetland plants and substrate, thus achieving an efficient pollutant removal capacity. Studies showed that VSSR was an effective means to enhance the rhizosphere effect of plants and pollutant removal in SSF CWs.

Air Warming and Drainage Influences Soil Microarthropod Communities

The degradation of wetlands due to climate change is of critical concern to human beings worldwide. Little is known about the potential synergistic effects of simultaneous water level reduction and warming on the underground wetland ecosystems. We conducted a 5-month field experiment in the Sanjiang Plain, utilizing open-top chambers and water level automatic control systems to investigate such synergistic effects. Soil springtails (Collembola) and mites (Acari) in the top (0–20 cm) soil layers were sampled to calculate their density, diversity, and to screen for indicator species. Warming significantly influenced soil springtail communities, slightly increasing the total density and total abundance under the natural water level while reducing them under a constant water level. In addition, Anurida maritima and Vertagopus laricis, two indicators for the natural water level, had the highest densities in the natural water level treatment and under the combined treatment of warming and natural water level, respectively. Cheiroseius sinicus and Malaconothrus tardus had the highest densities in warming under the 0 cm water level, significantly higher than the other three treatments. This study also revealed the importance of maintaining fluctuating water levels for microarthropod communities influenced by global warming, providing a theoretical basis for water level control in wetland restoration.

Enhanced phosphorus removal of constructed wetland through plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) addition

Phosphorus (P) removal efficiency of constructed wetland (CW) was limited due to the adsorption saturation on substrate surface along with continuous operation of CW. This study attempted to improve the P removal of CW through introduction of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Compared with the control-CW (C-CW), the results of CW with bio-augmentation (B-CW) showed that the total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiency was increased by 36.7% due to the enhanced plant uptake of P. The physiology indicators (height and root activity) of plants in B-CW were significantly improved, and the average P content of plants in B-CW was 0.78 g/kg, which was 85.7% higher than that of C-CW (0.42 g/kg). This was because PGPR addition optimized the P forms adsorbed on substrate surface and increased the proportion of Ca/Mg-P which was bioavailable for plant growth, and then subsequently enhanced plant uptake of P. Through bio-augmentation, the proportion of P removal by plant uptake in B-CW (25.2%) was increased by 2.5 times compared with that of C-CW (7.1%). The outcomes of this study would shed light on intensifying the role of plant uptake in P removal of CWs through bio-augmentation.

Ecological adaptability and population growth tolerance characteristics of Carex cinerascens in response to water level changes in Poyang Lake, China

Water level conditions are the key factors that affect the growth and distribution of wetland plants. Using Carex cinerascens (C. cinerascens) as the study species, we employ indoor simulations and field surveys. Our results show that C. cinerascens can adapt to rhythmic changes in the water level through different adaptation strategies. Compared to that of the control group, plant growth was better with a 0-0.4 cm/d water level rate, and plant growth was in the 42-56 cm range to that a 1.0-1.4 cm/d water level rate. Furthermore, it was observed that 0-0.4 cm/d was the most suitable growth rate, with 0.6-1.0 cm/d and 0-32 cm being the ideal plant tolerance ranges, and increasing to 1.0-1.4 cm/d and 32-56 cm exceeds the plant tolerance threshold. In the middle and late period of the experiment (25-45 d), the ecological characteristics of the plants changed significantly. For example, the root-to-shoot ratio of the plant in the stable water level reached 26.1. In our field observations, plant biomass can be influenced by a variety of environmental factors. The frequency of the species was the largest at an elevation of 15 m, and the growth status of the dominant and companion species of C. cinerascens was weakened with an increase in soil moisture content. The suitable water content for C. cinerascens growth was 27.6-57.3%, the distribution elevation was 12.54-16.59 m, and the optimum elevation was 13.56-15.54 m. The study is expected to provide a reference for wetland ecology research and wetland protection and restoration, a theoretical reference for the coordination of water resource development and utilization of Poyang Lake and ecological protection of important lakes and wetlands, and an important scientific basis for wetland hydrologic regulation, ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation.

Is there evidence of local adaptation of Phragmites australis to water level gradients and fluctuation frequencies?

Greater differences in hydrologic conditions are expected between coastal and inland wetlands with global climate change. Local adaptation has been considered as a significant driver of intraspecific differentiation in heterogeneous habitats. The common reed Phragmites australis is a cosmopolitan wetland species with high genetic variability and adaptability. In our study, reeds collected from coastal and inland wetlands were subjected to three stable water level gradients and two fluctuation frequencies in a common garden experiment. We measured their aboveground and belowground biomass, height, density, stem diameter, leaf water potential, specific leaf area, and photosynthetic parameters. Our results showed that P. australis exhibited high tolerance to stable and fluctuating water levels up to 30 cm depth. Increased shoot elongation rate and water-use efficiency promoted the establishment of P. australis in flooding habitats. The common reeds in the high-frequency water level fluctuation had a shorter shoot height and a lower shoot density than those in the low-frequency one. The coastal populations performed better under high (30 cm) and low (0 cm) water levels than the inland populations, which preferred shallow water (15 cm). The adaptation strategies of coastal and inland reeds to fluctuation frequencies were no different. We concluded that local adaptation might occur in P. australis populations due to different water levels rather than fluctuation frequency in coastal and inland wetlands. Our findings could provide a theoretical basis on the effects of flooding on intraspecific variation of wetland plants in future environmental change scene.

Spaceborne L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar Data for Geoscientific Analyses in Coastal Land Applications: A Review

The coastal zone offers among the world’s most productive and valuable ecosystems and is experiencing increasing pressure from anthropogenic impacts: human settlements, agriculture, aquaculture, trade, industrial activities, oil and gas exploitation and tourism. Earth observation has great capability to deliver valuable data at the local, regional and global scales and can support the assessment and monitoring of land- and water-related applications in coastal zones. Compared to optical satellites, cloud-cover does not limit the timeliness of data acquisition with spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors, which have all-weather, day and night capabilities. Hence, active radar systems demonstrate great potential for continuous mapping and monitoring of coastal regions, particularly in cloud-prone tropical and sub-tropical climates. The canopy penetration capability with long radar wavelength enables L-band SAR data to be used for coastal terrestrial environments and has been widely applied and investigated for the following geoscientific topics: mapping and monitoring of flooded vegetation and inundated areas; the retrieval of aboveground biomass; and the estimation of soil moisture. Human activities, global population growth, urban sprawl and climate change-induced impacts are leading to increased pressure on coastal ecosystems causing land degradation, deforestation and land use change. This review presents a comprehensive overview of existing research articles that apply spaceborne L-band SAR data for geoscientific analyses that are relevant for coastal land applications.
