Characterization of C-reactive protein in dogs undergoing medial patellar luxation surgery

Measurement and clinical applications of C-reactive protein in gastrointestinal diseases of dogs

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a positive acute-phase protein, serum concentrations of which increase nonspecifically in response to inflammatory processes of the dog. As such, it can aid in the identification of inflammatory disease and, maybe more importantly, the objective monitoring of disease progression. In dogs, CRP is frequently used to evaluate dogs with gastrointestinal diseases, such as chronic inflammatory enteropathies (also termed idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease), acute pancreatitis, canine parvovirus infection, hepatic disease, acute abdomen, and protein-losing enteropathy. The diversity of the assays available to measure CRP in dogs is nearly as numerous as the diseases in which serum concentrations of this protein are increased. Assay methodologies include laser nephelometric immunoassays, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, immunoturbidimetric assays, and time-resolved immunofluorometric assays. While many of these assays are acceptable for clinical use in the dog, the same assay and analyzer should be used to measure a patient's CRP concentration longitudinally. By looking at the uses of CRP in human gastroenterology, including reducing the duration of antibiotic therapy, the veterinary profession can gain insight into novel ways in which serum CRP concentration measurements might be applied in veterinary medicine in the future.

Serum C-reactive protein and iron levels following gonadectomy are not modified by perioperative administration of robenacoxib to dogs

The aim of this study was to evaluate the perioperative effects of robenacoxib on serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and iron concentrations in dogs undergoing gonadectomy. In a prospective, blinded, controlled clinical trial, 60 healthy dogs were randomly assigned to receive preoperative subcutaneous injection of either robenacoxib [2 mg/kg body weight (BW)], meloxicam (0.2 mg/kg BW), or saline (0.04 mL/kg BW), followed by oral administration over 72 h (robenacoxib: 2 to 4 mg/kg BW; meloxicam: 0.1 mg/kg BW; saline: gelatin capsules). Blood samples were taken before surgery and 12, 24, 48, 72 h, and 7 d after surgery. Pain scores were assessed via the short-form Glasgow Composite Pain Scale over 72 h postoperatively. C-reactive protein (CRP) and iron serum levels increased and decreased (P < 0.01, both), respectively, after surgery and returned to baseline within 1 wk. No differences were observed among treatments (P > 0.05) or based on surgery/gender (P > 0.05). Pain assessment revealed a higher incidence of treatment failure in saline (6 females versus 2 and 1 female in robenacoxib and meloxicam, respectively). In conclusion, robenacoxib and meloxicam had no influence on postoperative CRP or iron in dogs, which suggests that these nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) do not have a relevant effect on these biomarkers.

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and interleukin-6 as inflammatory biomarkers in dogs naturally infected with Ehrlichia canis

Background and Aim

Canine monocytotropic ehrlichiosis (CME), a tick-borne disease, leads to a systemic inflammatory response syndrome; it is thus important to assess the intensity of inflammation in order to treat it appropriately. The current study was designed to evaluate hematological, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters in dogs naturally infected with Ehrlichia canis compared with those in healthy dogs. We also assessed the relationship among several inflammation-related parameters and considered these parameters for use as inflammatory biomarkers of CME.

Materials and Methods

Twenty-eight dogs were divided into two groups based on the results of nested polymerase chain reaction for detecting E. canis, comprising a healthy group (n=11) and an infected group (n=17). A blood sample was collected from each dog to evaluate hematological, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters, with the obtained results being statistically compared between the groups. Moreover, the correlations of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were investigated in the 28 dogs.

Results

In the infected group, the mean levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were significantly lower than in the healthy group, while the mean lymphocyte and monocyte counts were higher. The mean levels of ESR and CRP were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the infected group, whereas no significant differences were found in IL-6 levels between the two groups. In the correlation analysis, ESR and CRP levels were highly correlated (p<0.01, r=0.531).

Conclusion

Elevated ESR and CRP levels were found in dogs naturally infected with E. canis, which also presented mild to moderate inflammation in this study. Moreover, CRP was significantly correlated with ESR, so ESR and CRP may serve as inflammatory biomarkers for monitoring CME.
