Measuring the Effects of Cognitive Capacity on Sentence Comprehension: Evidence From Elementary School-Age Children

PURPOSE

Our aim was to (a) develop a sentence comprehension measure that distinguished between cognitive capacity and syntactic knowledge in school-age children and (b) examine the relationship between comprehension performance and cognitive variables (working memory capacity and retrieval from long-term memory).

METHOD

We developed and administered a picture selection sentence comprehension task to 122 school-age children representing varied cognitive abilities. We evaluated comprehension accuracy and response time in two syntactically identical conditions but with different cognitive demands incorporated in picture foils-one with low demand using superfluous adjectives and another with high demand using contrastive adjectives. Children also completed tasks measuring working memory capacity and long-term memory retrieval.

RESULTS

Comprehension accuracy was significantly lower, and response times were longer in the high-cognitive demand condition compared to the low-demand condition. Errors frequently involved incorrect attribute selection in the high-demand condition that included contrastive adjectives in picture foils, while reversal errors prevailed in the low-demand condition, which included superfluous adjectives. Accuracy correlated positively with the memory variables. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that after adjusting for comprehension in the low-cognitive demand condition (38.60% variance), memory variables accounted for 4.50% additional variance in the high-demand condition with only working memory capacity as the unique predictor.

CONCLUSIONS

The significant role of working memory capacity in comprehending sentences with high cognitive demand indicated the recruitment of active attention and verbal rehearsal. Data support the newly developed measure's potential for assessing cognitive skills integral to sentence comprehension in school-age children.

Dichotic listening deficits in children with hearing loss

PURPOSE

This correlational study compared dichotic listening among children with significant hearing loss to typically developing children and children clinically assessed for auditory processing disorder.

METHOD

Recorded versions of two dichotic tests were delivered under earphones or in the sound field for children using amplification. Individual ear scores and interaural asymmetry were compared to normative data. Matched deficit patterns from both tests were identified, ranked for severity of deficit, and compared across groups. Relationships between dichotic scores and factors related to amplification were investigated in the children with hearing loss.

RESULTS

Dichotic scores were significantly poorer among children with hearing loss without the large interaural asymmetries seen in children assessed clinically for auditory processing problems. Device type and age of implantation had no effect on scores; non-dominant ear scores on the digits test were significantly correlated to age of device use in the left ear and duration of device use in the right ear. Non-dominant ear scores with digits were also significantly correlated with bilateral word recognition.

CONCLUSIONS

Poor dichotic perception in children with significant hearing losses may be related to the use of recorded test materials, immature skills in attention and working memory, or other factors that contribute to development of vocabulary and language. These weaknesses may interfere with successful mainstream educational placement in these children. Assessment of dichotic performance in this population could lead to deficit-specific interventions that may improve outcomes and enhance educational opportunities for children with hearing loss.

Evaluation of auditory working memory in Bharatanatyam dancers

Background

Neuroplasticity is a phenomenon exhibited by our nervous system as an indicator of overall development and in response to training, injury/loss of particular function, treatment/drugs and as a result of stimulation from the surrounding environment.

Objective

The aim of the current study was to assess the auditory working memory capacities in Bharatanatyam dancers.

Method

The participants comprised fifty-four females with normal hearing sensitivity who belonged to two groups. Group-I consisted of 27 individuals who underwent formal training in Bharatanatyam for a minimum period of three years. Group-II consisted of the age-matched control group, consisting of 27 individuals who were non-dancers. The auditory working memory tasks included arranging the English digits presented binaurally in forward, backward, ascending, and descending spans. The maximum values (for the length of sequence arranged), midpoint values (average score), and response time for each task were noted down and compared among groups.

Results

The scores were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test, which revealed enhanced working memory exhibited by dancers for maximum values and midpoint scores for all three tasks except ascending span. It was also noted that the dancers exhibited a shorter response time compared to non-dancers for all the tasks except ascending span.

Conclusion

The current study highlights an enhanced auditory working memory capacity in Bharatanatyam dancers, which could be perceived as evidence of neuroplastic changes induced in the auditory and motor cortex as a consequence of extensive stimulation for auditory processing abilities and motor planning resulting from long-term dance training and regular practice.

Speech Perception in Noise Predicts Oral Narrative Comprehension in Children With Developmental Language Disorder

We examined the relative contribution of auditory processing abilities (tone perception and speech perception in noise) after controlling for short-term memory capacity and vocabulary, to narrative language comprehension in children with developmental language disorder. Two hundred and sixteen children with developmental language disorder, ages 6 to 9 years (Mean = 7; 6), were administered multiple measures. The dependent variable was children's score on the narrative comprehension scale of the Test of Narrative Language. Predictors were auditory processing abilities, phonological short-term memory capacity, and language (vocabulary) factors, with age, speech perception in quiet, and non-verbal IQ as covariates. Results showed that narrative comprehension was positively correlated with the majority of the predictors. Regression analysis suggested that speech perception in noise contributed uniquely to narrative comprehension in children with developmental language disorder, over and above all other predictors; however, tone perception tasks failed to explain unique variance. The relative importance of speech perception in noise over tone-perception measures for language comprehension reinforces the need for the assessment and management of listening in noise deficits and makes a compelling case for the functional implications of complex listening situations for children with developmental language disorder.

Infants recognize words spoken through opaque masks but not through clear masks

COVID-19 has modified numerous aspects of children's social environments. Many children are now spoken to through a mask. There is little empirical evidence attesting to the effects of masked language input on language processing. In addition, not much is known about the effects of clear masks (i.e., transparent face shields) versus opaque masks on language comprehension in children. In the current study, 2-year-old infants were tested on their ability to recognize familiar spoken words in three conditions: words presented with no mask, words presented through a clear mask, and words presented through an opaque mask. Infants were able to recognize familiar words presented without a mask and when hearing words through opaque masks, but not when hearing words through clear masks. Findings suggest that the ability of infants to recover spoken language input through masks varies depending on the surface properties of the mask.
