Characteristics and driving mechanisms of species beta diversity in desert plant communities

Drivers of desert plant beta diversity on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau

The desert ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is an important component of China's desert ecosystem. Studying the mechanisms shaping the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional beta diversity of plant communities in the QTP desert will help us to promote scientific conservation and management of the region's biodiversity. This study investigated the effects of environmental (including altitude, climate factors, and soil factors) and geographic distances on three facets of beta diversity as well as their turnover and nestedness components based on field survey data. The results showed that turnover components dominate the three facets of beta diversity. However, the turnover contributions to phylogenetic and functional beta diversity were lower than for taxonomic beta diversity. Environmental distance had a greater influence than geographic distance, with the former uniquely explaining 15.2%-22.8% of beta diversity and the latter explaining only 1.7%-2.4%. Additionally, the explanatory power of different factors for beta diversity differed between herbs and shrubs, with environmental distance being more important for the latter. Distance-based redundancy analysis suggested that soil total potassium content had a substantial impact on the beta diversity of three dimensions, with mean temperature of the coldest month and soil total phosphorus content having a substantial impact on taxonomic and functional beta diversity as well. Our results support that environmental sorting plays a predominant role in shaping plant community composition across QTP desert ecosystems. To maintain the plant diversity of this region, it is crucial to prioritize the conservation of its diverse environmental conditions and actively mitigate its degradation by anthropogenic pressures.

Year effects drive beta diversity, but unevenly across plant community types

Year of establishment can be a critical driver of plant communities with the establishment stage of community development particularly susceptible to factors including ambient rain, temperature, and other temporally variable drivers (e.g., seed and seedling predators). However, while year effects have been shown to drive community structure at local (patch) scales, it is yet unexplored how these within-patch effects scale up to drive landscape-level patterns of biodiversity. These dynamics are likely to be critical but are overlooked in many systems including those with high-frequency disturbance regimes or active management. Here we leveraged a series of field-based grassland mesocosms established identically at three sites across 5 years, and each monitored for 4-8 years. We compared the strength of these temporal and spatial drivers (year effects and site effects) on consequent patterns of spatial and temporal variability (beta diversity and turnover) between plots seeded with native perennial species versus those seeded with nonnative annual species. The composition of plots seeded with perennial species showed strong effects of planting year and consequently exhibited higher beta diversity within sites (across mesocosms established in five different years within sites), while plots seeded with annual species had higher between-site variation but low beta diversity within sites. Plots with annual species were also more temporally variable than plots with perennial species. These findings have important implications for our understanding of key drivers of biodiversity across landscapes. Specifically, we showed that variable trajectories in community composition generated by site and year effects during establishment can promote beta diversity across landscapes dominated by perennial species, but are considerably less impactful in annual-dominated systems. These findings further our understanding of the importance of assembly dynamics on landscape-scale patterns of diversity, and have important management implications for restoration efforts.

The combined effect of surface water and groundwater on environmental heterogeneity reveals the basis of beta diversity pattern in desert oasis communities

Beta diversity indicates the species turnover with respect to a particular environmental gradient. It is crucial for understanding biodiversity maintenance mechanisms and for prescribing conservation measures. In this study, we aimed to reveal the drivers of beta diversity patterns in desert hinterland oasis communities by establishing three types of surface water disturbance and groundwater depth gradients. The results indicated that the dominant factor driving the beta diversity pattern within the same gradient shifted from soil organic matter to pH, as groundwater depth became shallower and surface water disturbance increased. Among the different gradients, surface water disturbance can have important effects on communities where original water resource conditions are extremely scarce. Under the premise that all habitats are disturbed by low surface water, differences in groundwater depth dominated the shifts in the community species composition. However, when groundwater depth in each habitat was shallow, surface water disturbance had little effect on the change in species composition. For the two components of beta diversity, the main drivers of species turnover pattern was the unique effects of surface water disturbance and soil environmental differences, and the main driver of species nestedness pattern was the common effect of multiple environmental pressures. The results of this study suggest that increasing the disturbance of surface water in dry areas with the help of river flooding will help in promoting vegetation restoration and alleviating the degradation of oases. They also confirm that surface water and groundwater mutually drive the establishment of desert oasis communities. Equal focus on both factors can contribute to the rational ecological recovery of dryland oases and prevent biodiversity loss.

Beta Diversity Patterns Unlock the Community Assembly of Woody Plant Communities in the Riparian Zone

Beta diversity refers to changes in community composition across time and space, including species richness and replacement. Few studies have examined beta diversity patterns of riparian vegetation communities in terms of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional attributes. In this study, we conducted a field survey of woody plant communities in the riparian zone of the Lijiang River Basin in China. We analyze variations in taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional beta diversity, the relative contributions of species richness and replacement to beta diversity and the relationships between beta diversity and environmental distance and geographical distance. The results show that: (1) replacement was the dominant component of taxonomic beta diversity and richness was the dominant component of functional and phylogenetic beta diversity; and (2) dispersal limitation and habitat filtering jointly drive the community assembly of woody plant communities in the riparian zone of the Lijiang River Basin. Therefore, when formulating conservation strategies for woody plants along the Lijiang River riparian zone, improving ecological communities and enhancing species dispersal between communities should be given equal attention. From a taxonomic perspective, it is more suitable to establish several small nature reserves, whereas from phylogenetic and functional perspectives, protection should focus on larger nature reserves.
