Abstract
Background In recent years, the attention paid to colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery and postoperative analgesia has increased. Objective The objective of the current study was to compare the impact of ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and transmuscular quadratus lumborum block (TQLB) upon providing relief to patients with postoperative pain who underwent laparoscopic resection for CRC. Methods In this prospective, comparative, and randomized study, the authors considered a total of 60 patients who chose to undergo laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer. The total number of patients was randomly divided into two groups (such as ESPB and TQLB) so that each group had a total of 30 patients. For the former group, i.e., the ESPB group, 20 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine was administered at each side for bilateral ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane block, while the latter group received the same dose of medicine for bilateral ultrasound-guided transmuscular quadratus lumborum block (TQLB). The researchers recorded the first time to rescue an analgesic, the whole amount of rescue analgesia under consumption in the first 24 hours after the surgical procedure, and associated adverse events. Results Among the groups considered, the ESPB group took a significantly lengthy time to raise a first request for rescue analgesic (280 ± 15.5 min) in comparison with the TQLB group (260 ± 13.8 min). Likewise, the consumption of overall nalbuphine was remarkably lesser in the ESPB group during the first 24 hours (24 ± 2.5 mg) compared to the TQLB group (30.5 ± 1.55 mg). Conclusion The analgesic efficacy of ESPB was better when compared to TQLB in terms of time to rescue analgesia and overall opioid consumption during the first 24 hours. Abstract
BACKGROUND In the first 24 h after surgery, it is necessary to evaluate the patient responses to pain, analgesia and patient satisfaction to prevent complications related to the pain management process. AIM To evaluate patients' outcomes (pain qualities, side effects of the pain management, pain treatment satisfaction, non-pharmacological pain treatment methods, predictors of pain management satisfaction and percentage of pain relief) according to the Revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire (APS-POQ-R) in the first 24 h. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS The study sample was comprised of 700 patients, who were surgically treated at the surgical clinics of a university hospital and completed the first postoperative 24 h. The data was collected through the "Patient Information Form" and the "Turkish version of the revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire (APS-POQ-R)". RESULTS The medians of the lowest and the worst postoperative pain severity level were 3.0 and 7.0, respectively. Patients experienced severe pain in 60 % of the first postoperative 24 h and reported that 70 % of their pain eventually decreased. A positive and significant correlation was found between pain interference, pain-affected mood/emotions, the severity of pain-related side effects, the least and worst pain severity levels and severe pain, and the percentage of time experienced with severe pain. CONCLUSIONS Most of the patients experienced severe pain, which restricted their daily life activities and led to negative emotions. Acute postoperative pain may negatively affect patient outcomes and delay postoperative recovery during the early period. Therefore, pain should be managed in the early period to prevent physical and psychological side effects.

Abstract
Postoperative pain is one of the most prevalent complications following surgery, and more than 47% of surgical patients endure postoperative discomfort worldwide. In Africa, due to resource shortages and other issues, postoperative pain is substantially more common when compared to developed countries. Severe postoperative pain has many negative effects, including possibly death, which can burden both individuals and society as a whole. Therefore, effectively controlling postoperative pain is becoming increasingly important. To enhance the effectiveness of future pain management, a thorough analysis of the current reasons for inadequate postoperative pain management is necessary. In this article, the present situations of occurring postoperative pain, children's postoperative pain, and pain management in Africa are reviewed, based on relevant and recent literature. In particular, the reasons for inadequate postoperative pain management in Africa are detailed in this article from five perspectives: the inadequate assessment of postoperative pain, the knowledge gap among medical professionals, the patients' misconceptions, the scarcity of resources, and the lack of medications. Additionally, we offer appropriate solutions following various factors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several methods have been proposed for postoperative pain management, including administration of opioid analgesics, epidural analgesia, and perineural and infiltrative techniques; however, data are lacking on the relationship between pain intensity, patients' age and gender, and surgery duration. DESIGN Prospective, observational, single-center study. METHODS The study included patients greater than or equal to 18 years old who underwent surgery with different anesthesia types, grouped according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists' physical status classification score. The McGill Pain Questionnaire was used to assess postoperative pain intensity. The postoperative pain evaluation was performed in the first 5 minutes on entering the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), and at 30 minutes and 24 hours after the operation. RESULTS Our results showed a significant negative relationship between pain intensity as assessed at 5 and 30 minutes postoperatively and age. Postoperative pain intensity at 24 hours was significantly lower after low-risk surgeries lasting up to 1 hour; pain intensity was also significantly lower at 30 minutes following epidural anesthesia. When nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were not administered in the PACU, pain intensity was significantly lower at 5 minutes, 30 minutes, and 3 hours. CONCLUSIONS Postoperative analgesic administration should be conducted in accordance with age and surgery type. Additionally, epidural anesthesia can reduce the immediate postoperative pain intensity.

Abstract
Introduction The authors investigated a novel functional pain scale, the Activity-Based Checks (ABCs) of Pain, following open urologic surgery. The primary objectives were to establish the strength of the correlation between the ABCs and the numeric rating scale (NRS) and determine the impact of functional pain on the patient's opioid requirements. We hypothesized that ABC score would correlate strongly with NRS and that the ABC score during hospitalization would be more closely correlated with the number of opioids prescribed and used. Methods This prospective study included patients at a tertiary academic hospital undergoing nephrectomy and cystectomy. The NRS and ABCs were collected pre-operatively, during the inpatient stay, and at the one-week follow-up. Milligrams of morphine equivalents (MMEs) prescribed at discharge and the MME reportedly taken during the first post-operative week were recorded. Spearman's Rho was used to assess the correlation between scale variables. Results Fifty-seven patients were enrolled. The ABCs correlated strongly with the NRS at baseline and post-operative appointments (r = 0.716, p < 0.001 and 0.643, p < 0.001). Neither the NRS nor the composite ABCs score was predictive of outpatient MME requirements; the ABCs function, "Walking outside the room" significantly correlated to MMEs taken after discharge (r = 0.471, p = 0.011). The greatest predictor of MMEs taken was the number of MMEs prescribed (0.493, p = 0.001). Conclusions This study highlighted the importance of post-operative pain assessment that takes functional pain into consideration to evaluate pain, inform management decisions, and reduce opiate reliance. It also emphasized the strong relationship between opioids prescribed and opioids consumed.

Abstract
Microencapsulation plays an important role in biomedical technology owing to its particular and attractive characteristics. In this work, we developed ropivacaine and dexamethasone loaded poly(D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microparticles via electrospraying technique and investigated the release behavior of electrosprayed microparticles. The particle morphology of sprayed particles was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The in vitro drug release kinetics were evaluated employing an elution method, and the in vivo pharmaceutical release as well as its efficacy on pain relief were tested using an animal activity model. The microscopic observation suggested that sprayed microparticles exhibit a size distribution of 5-6 µm. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated the successful incorporation of pharmaceuticals in the PLGA particulates. The drugs-loaded particles discharged sustainably high concentrations of ropivacaine and dexamethasone at the target region in vivo for over two weeks, and the drug levels in the blood remained low. By adopting the electrospraying technique, we were able to prepare drug-embedded polymeric microparticles with effectiveness and with a sustainable capability for postoperative pain control.
