Abstract
Background This study aims to use six nutrition-related indicators to assess the relationship between nutritional status and the risk of COPD as well as the all-cause mortality rate, and to determine the most reliable predictive indicators. Methods Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning the years 2013 to 2018 were extracted. Nutritional status was evaluated using Controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), Advanced Lung Cancer Inflammation Index (ALI), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Triglycerides (TG) × Total Cholesterol (TC) × Body Weight (BW) Index (TCBI), and Albumin-to-Globulin Ratio (AGR) nutritional-related indicators. Multivariate weighted logistic and Cox regression models were employed to assess the correlation between the six nutritional-related indicators and the risk of COPD and as all-cause mortality. The restricted cubic spline tests were applied to explore potential nonlinear relationships, and ROC curves and C-index analyses were conducted to compare the predictive capabilities of different indicators. Stratified analysis and propensity score matching (PSM) to assess the robustness of the results. Results In this study, Lower ALI, lower GNRI, and higher CONUT scores were positively correlated with an increased risk of COPD (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.10-2.84) (OR: 8.66, 95% CI: 2.95-25.5), and (OR: 5.11, 95% CI: 1.72-15.2), respectively. It was found that ALI and GNRI had a non-linear relationship with the risk of COPD. After propensity score matching (PSM), the associations between ALI, GNRI, CONUT scores, and COPD remained consistent. Lower ALI, PNI, and GNRI scores were positively associated with all-cause mortality in COPD patients (HR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.10-5.27), (HR: 3.76, 95% CI: 1.89-7.48), and (HR: 4.55, 95% CI: 1.30-15.9), respectively, with GNRI displaying a non-linear relationship with all-cause mortality. ROC curve and C-index analyses indicated that ALI had the best predictive ability for both COPD risk and all-cause mortality. Conclusion ALI, GNRI, and CONUT scores are correlated with the risk of COPD, while ALI, PNI, and GNRI scores are associated with all-cause mortality in COPD patients. Compared to other nutritional scores, ALI may provide more effective predictive value for both risk and all-cause mortality.

Abstract
Genes from Perilla frutescens and Ocimum basilicum were introduced into N. tabacum L. var. HHY via distant hybridization, and the new-type tobacco varieties "Zisu" and "Luole" were developed, with noticeable differences in chemical composition. Smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and its pathogenesis is complex. In the present study, 48 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into four groups, namely, the control, "HHY", "Zisu" and "Luole", and then exposed to fresh air/cigarette smoke (CS) for 30 days and 60 days. The COPD model was constructed, and their health hazards were compared and evaluated. CS from different tobacco varieties influenced rats in varying degrees at the tissue, cell and molecular levels. The rats in the "HHY" group showed obvious symptoms, such as cough and dyspnea, which were less severe in the "Zisu" and "Luole" groups. Pathological and morphological analyses, including scores, MLI, MAN, WAt/Pbm and WAm/Pbm, showed that "Zisu" and "Luole" caused less damage to the airways and lung parenchyma than "HHY". Significant increases in the numbers of total leukocytes and neutrophils in the BALF were found in "HHY" compared to those in "Zisu" and "Luole". Moreover, they caused less oxidative stress and apoptosis in lung tissues, as reflected by indicators such as ROS, MDA, T-AOC, GSH, the apoptotic index and the ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax. "Zisu" and "Luole" even altered the ratios of MMP-9/TIMP-1 and IFN-γ/IL-4 in lung tissues to a lesser degree. These differences between CS-exposed rats may be closely related to the altered expression of Nrf2, p38 MAPK and p-p38 MAPK. Changes in chemical composition via introducing genes from some medicinal plants may be an attractive strategy for tobacco harm reduction.

Abstract
Purpose Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) techniques, focusing on airway anatomy and emphysema, may help to detect early structural changes of COPD disease. This retrospective study aims to identify high-risk COPD participants by using QCT measurements. Patients and Methods We enrolled 140 participants from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shenyang Medical College who completed inspiratory high-resolution CT scans, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and clinical characteristics recorded. They were diagnosed Non-COPD by PFT value of FEV1/FVC >70% and divided into two groups according percentage predicted FEV1 (FEV1%), low-risk COPD group: FEV1% ≥ 95%, high-risk group: 80% < FEV1% < 95%. The QCT measurements were analyzed by the Student's t-test (or Mann-Whitney U-test) method. Then, feature candidates were identified using the LASSO method. Meanwhile, the correlation between QCT measurements and PFTs was assessed by the Spearman rank correlation test. Furthermore, support vector machine (SVM) was performed to identify high-risk COPD participants. The performance of the models was evaluated in terms of accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), F1-score, and area under the ROC curve (AUC), with p <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results The SVM based on QCT measurements achieved good performance in identifying high-risk COPD patients with 85.71% of ACC, 88.34% of SEN, 84.00% of SPE, 83.33% of F1-score, and 0.93 of AUC. Further, QCT measurements integration of clinical data improved the performance with an ACC of 90.48%. The emphysema index (%LAA-950) of left lower lung was negatively correlated with PFTs (P < 0.001). The airway anatomy indexes of lumen diameter (LD) were correlated with PFTs. Conclusion QCT measurements combined with clinical information could provide an effective tool for an early diagnosis of high-risk COPD. The QCT indexes can be used to assess the pulmonary function status of high-risk COPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COPD and adult-onset asthma (AOA) are the most common noncommunicable respiratory diseases. To improve early identification and prevention, an overview of risk factors is needed. We therefore aimed to systematically summarise the nongenetic (exposome) risk factors for AOA and COPD. Additionally, we aimed to compare the risk factors for COPD and AOA. METHODS In this umbrella review, we searched PubMed for articles from inception until 1 February 2023 and screened the references of relevant articles. We included systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational epidemiological studies in humans that assessed a minimum of one lifestyle or environmental risk factor for AOA or COPD. RESULTS In total, 75 reviews were included, of which 45 focused on risk factors for COPD, 28 on AOA and two examined both. For asthma, 43 different risk factors were identified while 45 were identified for COPD. For AOA, smoking, a high body mass index (BMI), wood dust exposure and residential chemical exposures, such as formaldehyde exposure or exposure to volatile organic compounds, were amongst the risk factors found. For COPD, smoking, ambient air pollution including nitrogen dioxide, a low BMI, indoor biomass burning, childhood asthma, occupational dust exposure and diet were amongst the risk factors found. CONCLUSIONS Many different factors for COPD and asthma have been found, highlighting the differences and similarities. The results of this systematic review can be used to target and identify people at high risk for COPD or AOA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COPD is a prevalent and intractable chronic airway disease. At present, COPD is one of the diseases with the highest morbidity and mortality in the world; and causes a significant economic burden to patients and society. As a traditional exercise, the Baduanjin exercise has been inherited in China for hundreds of years. However, the treatment effects of Baduanjin exercise are controversial. This systematic review was designed to evaluate the efficacy of Baduanjin exercise in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. METHODS Published articles were searched in nine English and Chinese databases from inception to December, 2022. Two investigators conducted study selection and data extraction independently. Review Manager software 5.4 were implemented for data synthesis and analysis. Quality assessment for each study was based on the modified PEDro scale. RESULTS This review included 41 studies with 3,835 participants with stable COPD. Compared with the control group, the pooled data of Baduanjin exercise group showed significant improvements in the following outcomes (mean difference, 95% confidence interval): FVC (0.29, 0.25-0.33), FEV1 (0.27, 0.22-0.33), FEV1% (5.38, 4.38-6.39), FEV1/FVC (5.16, 4.48-5.84), 6MWD (38.57, 35.63-41.51), CAT (-2.30, -2.89 to -1.70), mMRC (-0.57, -0.66 to -0.48), SGRQ (-8.80, -12.75 to -4.86), HAMA (-7.39, -8.77 to -6.01), HAMD (-7.80, -9.24 to -6.37), SF-36 (8.63, 6.31-10.95). CONCLUSIONS Baduanjin exercise may have the potential to enhance lung function, exercise capacity, health status, mental status, and quality of life for patients with stable COPD. ETHIC AND DISSEMINATION This study is a systematic review and it does not involve harming the rights of participants. Ethical approval will not be required for this study. The research results may be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Abstract
An estimated 65 million people worldwide have moderate or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an umbrella term used to describe a group of progressive lung diseases that obstruct airflow such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking contributes to an estimated 90% of COPD cases, as the harmful chemicals produced during tobacco combustion damage the lungs and airways. Although smoking cessation is the only intervention shown to improve COPD prognosis in smokers, many patients who try to quit continue to smoke. The continued use of conventional cigarettes exacerbates COPD symptoms, and globally more than 3 million people die from the disease every year. The last two decades have seen the introduction of combustion-free nicotine delivery alternatives that produce significantly lower levels of the harmful components in cigarette smoke, and researchers have begun to assess the impact of switching from cigarettes to these products. Several studies have examined how patients with COPD use e-cigarettes as assistance for quitting, but few have examined how heated tobacco products (HTP) may reduce risk. This narrative review summarises results from pre-clinical, clinical, and real-world evidence studies showing possible harm reduction benefits for patients with COPD who switch to HTPs rather than continuing to smoke cigarettes. Epidemiological studies, real-world data analyses, and randomised clinical trials must be conducted to determine whether switching from cigarettes to HTPs can improve health outcomes in patients with COPD who would otherwise continue to smoke combustible cigarettes.

Abstract
Objective Exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM2.5) is the leading risk factor for developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in China. The present study aimed to investigate the trends in COPD mortality attributable to ambient PM2.5 exposure in China from 1990 to 2019. Methods Data on COPD burden attributable to ambient PM2.5 exposure in China were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was used to assess COPD mortality from 1990 to 2019. The APC model was used to analyze the temporal trends in the rate of COPD mortality attributable to ambient PM2.5 exposure according to age, period, and cohort. Results Exposure to ambient PM2.5 contributed to 192.4 thousand deaths in 1990 and 263.6 thousand deaths in 2019. The age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and the age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (ASDR) due to ambient PM2.5 exposure showed a gradual downward trend, the ASMR and ASDR in 2019 decreased to 16.6 per 100,000 with an EAPC of -2.82 (95% CI: -8.61 to 3.34) and 278.6 per 100,000 with an EAPC of -2.02 (95% CI: -7.85 to 4.19), compared to those in 1990, respectively. The relative risk (RR) of COPD increased with age in females, while in males, mortality significantly increased from the levels among those in the 60-64 age group to that among those in the 90-94 age group. In the period group, the RR of COPD in males remained above 1.0 from the 2000 to 2004 period, but it gradually decreased in females. The cohort effect showed an overall downward trend. Conclusion Although the ASMR and ASDR are decreasing in Chinese patients with COPD, the number of deaths due to COPD is increasing. Ambient PM2.5 exposure is more harmful in males and older people above 60 years of age.

Abstract
Our study is the first bibliometric and visual analysis on smoking cessation research of the past two decades. Our study identifies productive countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, and reveals a global network of collaborations of smoking cessation research. The Co-occurrence Analysis of Keywords shed lights on the research frontier, trends and hot topics on smoking cessation research.
This study aimed to analyze the scientific outputs of smoking cessation research and explore its hotspots and frontiers from 2002 to 2021, using bibliometric methods. We use the core collection of Web of Science as a data source, and apply bibliometric methods to visually analyze articles published in smoking cessation research from 2002 to 2021, including publication year, countries/regions, journals, authors, institutions, and keywords. The VOSviewer (1.6.16) tool was used for the analysis. A total of 8797 articles related to smoking cessation research were identified. The USA was the leading contributor with 4671 publications. NICOTINE&TOBACCO RESEARCH contributed the most publications (528), with the most citations (13746) and the highest H-index (59). The most contributing institutions were the University College London and University of California San Francisco. Robert West was most productive author. We found active collaborations among both productive authors and productive institutions. There were five hot topics in smoking cessation research: (1) Public health harm from tobacco; (2) The role of e-health in smoking cessation; (3) Role of primary health care in eliminating tobacco dependence; (4) Nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy; (5) The biological and clinical understanding of addiction. Our current study showed a growing trend in smoking cessation based on the number of published articles over the last 20 years. There was active cooperation between institutions, and authors. Electronic cigarettes, mHealth, eHealth, public health and mental health are foci of new and emerging research.

Abstract
Exposure to airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) induced various adverse health effects, such as metabolic syndrome, systemic inflammation, and respiratory disease. Many works have studied the effects of PM2.5 exposure on cells through intracellular proteomics analyses. However, changes of the extracellular proteome under PM2.5 exposure and its correlation with PM2.5-induced cytotoxicity still remain unclear. Herein, the cytotoxicity of PM2.5 on normal human bronchial epithelia cells (BEAS-2B cells) was evaluated, and the secretome profile of BEAS-2B cells before and after PM2.5 exposure was investigated. A total of 83 proteins (58 upregulated and 25 downregulated) were differentially expressed in extracellular space after PM2.5 treatment. Notably, we found that PM2.5 promoted the release of several pro-apoptotic factors and induced dysregulated secretion of extracellular matrix (ECM) constituents, showing that the abnormal extracellular environment attributed to PM2.5-induced cell damage. This study provided a secretome data for the deep understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying PM2.5-caused human bronchial epithelia cell damage.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a widespread disease associated with high rates of disability and mortality. COPD is characterized by chronic inflammation in the bronchi as well as systemic inflammation, which contributes significantly to the clinically heterogeneous course of the disease. Lipid metabolism disorders are common in COPD, being a part of its pathogenesis. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are not only involved in lipid metabolism, but are also part of the organism's immune and antioxidant defense. In addition, HDL is a versatile transport system for endogenous regulatory agents and is also involved in the removal of exogenous substances such as lipopolysaccharide. These functions, as well as information about lipoprotein metabolism disorders in COPD, allow a broader assessment of their role in the pathogenesis of heterogeneous and comorbid course of the disease.
