Optimization of adaptive filter control parameters for non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram extraction

Elicitation of fetal ECG from abdominal recordings using Blind Source Separation techniques and Robust Set Membership Affine Projection algorithm for signal quality enhancement

BACKGROUND

The utilization of non-invasive techniques for fetal cardiac health surveillance is pivotal in evaluating fetal well-being throughout the gestational period. This process requires clean and interpretable fetal Electrocardiogram (fECG) signals.

METHOD

The proposed work is the novel framework for the elicitation of fECG signals from abdominal ECG (aECG) recordings of the pregnant mother. The comprehensive approach encompasses pre-processing of the raw ECG signal, Blind Source Separation techniques (BSS), Decomposition techniques like Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), and its variants like Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD), and Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Additive Noise (CEEMDAN). The Robust Set Membership Affine Projection (RSMAP) Algorithm is deployed for the enhancement of the obtained fECG signal.

RESULT

The results show significant improvements in the elicited fECG signal with a maximum Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) of 31.72 dB and correlation coefficient = 0.899, Maximum Heart Rate(MHR) obtained in the range of 108-142 bpm for all the records of abdominal ECG signals. The statistical test gave a p-value of 0.21 accepting the null hypothesis. The Abdominal and Direct Fetal Electrocardiogram Database (ABDFECGDB) from PhysioNet has been used for this analysis.

CONCLUSION

The proposed framework demonstrates a robust and effective method for the elicitation and enhancement of fECG signals from the abdominal recordings.

Enhancing Fetal Electrocardiogram Signal Extraction Accuracy through a CycleGAN Utilizing Combined CNN-BiLSTM Architecture

The fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) records changes in the graph of fetal cardiac action potential during conduction, reflecting the developmental status of the fetus in utero and its physiological cardiac activity. Morphological alterations in the FECG can indicate intrauterine hypoxia, fetal distress, and neonatal asphyxia early on, enhancing maternal and fetal safety through prompt clinical intervention, thereby reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality. To reconstruct FECG signals with clear morphological information, this paper proposes a novel deep learning model, CBLS-CycleGAN. The model's generator combines spatial features extracted by the CNN with temporal features extracted by the BiLSTM network, thus ensuring that the reconstructed signals possess combined features with spatial and temporal dependencies. The model's discriminator utilizes PatchGAN, employing small segments of the signal as discriminative inputs to concentrate the training process on capturing signal details. Evaluating the model using two real FECG signal databases, namely "Abdominal and Direct Fetal ECG Database" and "Fetal Electrocardiograms, Direct and Abdominal with Reference Heartbeat Annotations", resulted in a mean MSE and MAE of 0.019 and 0.006, respectively. It detects the FQRS compound wave with a sensitivity, positive predictive value, and F1 of 99.51%, 99.57%, and 99.54%, respectively. This paper's model effectively preserves the morphological information of FECG signals, capturing not only the FQRS compound wave but also the fetal P-wave, T-wave, P-R interval, and ST segment information, providing clinicians with crucial diagnostic insights and a scientific foundation for developing rational treatment protocols.

Template subtraction based methods for non-invasive fetal electrocardiography extraction

Assessment of fetal heart rate (fHR) through non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) is challenging task. This study compares the performance of five template subtraction (TS) methods on Labor (12 5-min recordings) and Pregnancy datasets (10 20-min recordings). The methods include TS without adaptation, TS using singular value decomposition (TS[Formula: see text]), TS using linear prediction (TS[Formula: see text]), TS using scaling factor (TS[Formula: see text]), and sequential analysis (SA). The influence of the chosen maternal wavelet for the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) detector is also compared. The F1 score was used to measure performance. Each recording in both datasets consisted of four signals, resulting in a total comparison of 88 signals for the TS-based methods. The study reported the following results: F1 = 95.71% with TS, F1 = 95.93% with TS[Formula: see text], F1 = 95.30% with TS[Formula: see text], F1 = 95.82% with TS[Formula: see text], and F1 = 95.99% with SA. The study identified gaus3 as the suitable maternal wavelet for fetal R-peak detection using the CWT detector. Furthermore, the study classified signals from the tested datasets into categories of high, medium, and low quality, providing valuable insights for subsequent fECG signal extraction. This research contributes to advancing the understanding of non-invasive fECG signal processing and lays the groundwork for improving fetal monitoring in clinical settings.

A new algorithm for fetal heart rate detection: Fractional order calculus approach

OBJECTIVES

A new modified Pan-Tompkins' (mPT) method for fetal heart rate detection is presented. The mPT method is based on the hypothesis that optimal fractional order derivative and optimal window width of the moving average filter would enable efficient estimation of fetal heart rate from surface abdominal electrophysiological recordings with relatively low signal-to-noise ratios.

METHODS

The algorithm is tested on signals recorded from the abdomen of pregnant women available from the PhysioNet Computing in Cardiology Challenge database. Fetal heart rate detection is performed on 10-s long segments selected by the estimation of signal-to-noise ratios (the extravagance of the fetal QRS peak to its surroundings and to the whole signal; and the mean ratio of fetal and maternal QRS peaks) and on the manually selected segments.

RESULTS

The best results are obtained via criteria based on the extravagance of the fetal QRS peak to its surroundings that reached average sensitivity of 97%, positive predictive value of 97%, error rate of ∼3.5%, and F1 score of 97%. The obtained averaged optimal parameters for mPT are 0.51 for fractional order and 24.5 ms for the window width of the moving average filter.

CONCLUSION

Proposed mPT algorithm showed satisfactory performance for fetal heart rate detection. Further adaptations of the presented mPT method could be used for peak detection in noisy environments in biomedical signal analysis in general.

Independent component analysis algorithms for non-invasive fetal electrocardiography

The independent component analysis (ICA) based methods are among the most prevalent techniques used for non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (NI-fECG) processing. Often, these methods are combined with other methods, such adaptive algorithms. However, there are many variants of the ICA methods and it is not clear which one is the most suitable for this task. The goal of this study is to test and objectively evaluate 11 variants of ICA methods combined with an adaptive fast transversal filter (FTF) for the purpose of extracting the NI-fECG. The methods were tested on two datasets, Labour dataset and Pregnancy dataset, which contained real records obtained during clinical practice. The efficiency of the methods was evaluated from the perspective of determining the accuracy of detection of QRS complexes through the parameters of accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SE), positive predictive value (PPV), and harmonic mean between SE and PPV (F1). The best results were achieved with a combination of FastICA and FTF, which yielded mean values of ACC = 83.72%, SE = 92.13%, PPV = 90.16%, and F1 = 91.14%. Time of calculation was also taken into consideration in the methods. Although FastICA was ranked to be the sixth fastest with its mean computation time of 0.452 s, it had the best ratio of performance and speed. The combination of FastICA and adaptive FTF filter turned out to be very promising. In addition, such device would require signals acquired from the abdominal area only; no need to acquire reference signal from the mother's chest.

[Fetal electrocardiogram signal extraction and analysis method combining fast independent component analysis algorithm and convolutional neural network]

Fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) signals provide important clinical information for early diagnosis and intervention of fetal abnormalities. In this paper, we propose a new method for fetal ECG signal extraction and analysis. Firstly, an improved fast independent component analysis method and singular value decomposition algorithm are combined to extract high-quality fetal ECG signals and solve the waveform missing problem. Secondly, a novel convolutional neural network model is applied to identify the QRS complex waves of fetal ECG signals and effectively solve the waveform overlap problem. Finally, high quality extraction of fetal ECG signals and intelligent recognition of fetal QRS complex waves are achieved. The method proposed in this paper was validated with the data from the PhysioNet computing in cardiology challenge 2013 database of the Complex Physiological Signals Research Resource Network. The results show that the average sensitivity and positive prediction values of the extraction algorithm are 98.21% and 99.52%, respectively, and the average sensitivity and positive prediction values of the QRS complex waves recognition algorithm are 94.14% and 95.80%, respectively, which are better than those of other research results. In conclusion, the algorithm and model proposed in this paper have some practical significance and may provide a theoretical basis for clinical medical decision making in the future.

Nature inspired method for noninvasive fetal ECG extraction

This paper introduces a novel algorithm for effective and accurate extraction of non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (NI-fECG). In NI-fECG based monitoring, the useful signal is measured along with other signals generated by the pregnant women's body, especially maternal electrocardiogram (mECG). These signals are more distinct in magnitude and overlap in time and frequency domains, making the fECG extraction extremely challenging. The proposed extraction method combines the Grey wolf algorithm (GWO) with sequential analysis (SA). This innovative combination, forming the GWO-SA method, optimises the parameters required to create a template that matches the mECG, which leads to an accurate elimination of the said signal from the input composite signal. The extraction system was tested on two databases consisting of real signals, namely, Labour and Pregnancy. The databases used to test the algorithms are available on a server at the generalist repositories (figshare) integrated with Matonia et al. (Sci Data 7(1):1-14, 2020). The results show that the proposed method extracts the fetal ECG signal with an outstanding efficacy. The efficacy of the results was evaluated based on accurate detection of the fQRS complexes. The parameters used to evaluate are as follows: accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SE), positive predictive value (PPV), and F1 score. Due to the stochastic nature of the GWO algorithm, ten individual runs were performed for each record in the two databases to assure stability as well as repeatability. Using these parameters, for the Labour dataset, we achieved an average ACC of 94.60%, F1 of 96.82%, SE of 97.49%, and PPV of 98.96%. For the Pregnancy database, we achieved an average ACC of 95.66%, F1 of 97.44%, SE of 98.07%, and PPV of 97.44%. The obtained results show that the fHR related parameters were determined accurately for most of the records, outperforming the other state-of-the-art approaches. The poorer quality of certain signals have caused deviation from the estimated fHR for certain records in the databases. The proposed algorithm is compared with certain well established algorithms, and has proven to be accurate in its fECG extractions.
