Abstract
BACKGROUND Sinus floor elevation is one of the predictable techniques for augmentation of vertically deficient posterior maxillary alveolar ridges. Several biomaterials were reported to be successful for sinus augmentation, including xenografts and hydroxyapatite. The aim of this study was to compare the quality and quantity of generated bone using xenografts versus nanohydroxyapatite in sinus augmentation. METHODOLOGY Twenty-four patients/sinuses were randomly assigned into two groups; in the control group, patients underwent sinus floor elevation and augmentation using deproteinized bovine bone (DBB), whereas in the study group, the sinus was augmented using nanohydroxy-apatite bone (NHA). For each patient, the amount of bone height was assessed preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, and 6 months postoperatively. Furthermore, the quality of the newly formed bone was assessed via histological and histomorphometric analyses after 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS Both biomaterials showed a good level of consolidation. In the study group, the mean bone height after 6 months was 11.72 ± 1.24 compared to 12.01 ± 1.16 mm in the control group which was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The mean bone area percent of newly formed bone was 29.84% ± 6.7% for NHA group and 34.73 ± 7.9 for DBB group. Moreover, the mean percent of residual grafting material was 32.43% ± 11.53% for NHA group compared to 30.43% ± 8.27% for DBB group. Histologically, there was no significant difference between both groups regarding different parameters (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The two-stage sinus floor augmentation using NHA and DBB revealed no statistically significant difference regarding both the quality and the quantity of the regenerated bone. Abstract
The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the efficacy of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) with hydroxyapatite (HA) granules and fibrin sealant (FS) in maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA), with a focus on the volume change. Fifty-two of 137 patients who underwent MSFA with rhBMP-2/HA grafting between June 2016 and December 2022 met the study inclusion criteria; 25 had received rhBMP-2/HA without FS and 27 had received rhBMP-2/HA with FS. Computed tomography (CT) images were obtained preoperatively, immediately following the operation, and at 6 months postoperative. These images were three-dimensionally reconstructed to measure the volumetric and height changes following MSFA. The mean ± standard deviation percentage of volumetric change at 6 months was 48.75 ± 37.44% in the group with FS and 29.77 ± 13.42% in the group without FS (P = 0.019). The vertical height measured at a specific site of the grafted area showed a mean percentage change at 6 months of 4.05 ± 12.08% in the group with FS and 6.07 ± 10.15% in the group without FS (P = 0.518). The additional use of FS as a carrier for rhBMP-2/HA in MSFA was found to improve surgical convenience and bone regeneration ability.

Abstract
The restoration of bone defects resulting from tooth loss, periodontal disease, severe trauma, tumour resection and congenital malformations is a crucial task in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. Growth factor- and gene-activated bone graft substitutes can be used instead of traditional materials to solve these problems. New materials will overcome the low efficacy and difficulties associated with the use of traditional bone substitutes in complex situations. One of the most well-studied active components for bone graft substitutes is bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), which has strong osteoinductive properties. The aim of this review was to examine the use of BMP-2 protein and gene therapy for bone regeneration in the oral and maxillofacial region and to discuss its future use.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a chemically modified sandblasted large-grit acid-etched implant (hydrophilic) in lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE), compared with a conventional one (hydrophobic). MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study design was adopted. Patients who received LSFE with simultaneous implant placement were recruited. According to different types of implant surfaces, patients were divided into two groups (the hydrophilic group and the hydrophobic group). Implant survival rate (SR), endo-sinus bone stability on the radiographs, mean probing depths, percentage of bleeding on probing, marginal bone loss, and patient satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 106 patients with 180 implants (hydrophilic:101, hydrophobic:79) in 119 maxillary sinuses were included. The follow-up period ranged from 2 to 5 years. Three hydrophobic implants and one hydrophilic implant in four different patients failed. The SR of the hydrophilic group was higher than that of the hydrophobic group but without a significant difference (p > .05). The change and change rate of endo-sinus bone height (ΔESBH and RΔESBH) and bone volume (ΔESBV and RΔESBV) in the hydrophilic group were less than those in the hydrophobic group, with a significant difference at 6 months after implantation. No other significant difference was found between the two groups. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic implants were suitable for LSFE with predictable clinical outcomes. Meanwhile, hydrophilic implants could contribute to the grafted endo-sinus bone stability during healing time.

Abstract
Background/purpose The long-term outcomes of implants placed in grafted sinuses using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) are unclear. This study aimed to compare 3- and 5-year implant survival rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) during functional loading. Materials and methods In this retrospective study, we analyzed 63 implants inserted after maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) in 45 patients between January 2016 and April 2019. The outcome variables were: 1) 3- and 5-year cumulative survival rates of the implants and 2) MBL after functional loading. Other assessed variables included patient demographic information, preoperative residual bone height (RBH), surgical site, implant length and diameter, graft material, healing period before loading, prosthetic type, and opposing dentition. Results The cumulative 3- and 5-year survival rates of the implants were 100% in the rhBMP-2 group and 95.5% and 86.4% in the non-rhBMP-2 group, respectively. The average 3- and 5-year MBL were 1.14 ± 0.67 mm, 1.30 ± 0.74 mm in the rhBMP-2 group and 1.68 ± 0.90 mm, 2.27 ± 1.29 mm in the non-rhBMP-2 group, respectively. Significant differences were observed between 3 and 5 years between the two groups. Conclusion Addition of the rhBMP-2 to the graft materials positively affects implant placement in the grafted maxillary sinus in terms of implant survival and MBL when preoperative RBH is unfavorable.

Abstract
Contemporary oral tissue engineering strategies involve recombinant human growth factor approaches to stimulate diverse cellular processes including cell differentiation, migration, recruitment, and proliferation at grafted areas. Recombinant human growth factor applications in oral hard and soft tissue regeneration have been progressively researched over the last 25 years. Growth factor-mediated surgical approaches aim to accelerate healing, tissue reconstruction, and patient recovery. Thus, regenerative approaches involving growth factors such as recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) and recombinant human bone morphogenetic proteins (rhBMPs) have shown certain advantages over invasive traditional surgical approaches in severe hard and soft tissue defects. Several clinical studies assessed the outcomes of rhBMP-2 in diverse clinical applications for implant site development and bone augmentation. Current evidence regarding the clinical benefits of rhBMP-2 compared to conventional therapies is inconclusive. Nevertheless, it seems that rhBMP-2 can promote faster wound healing processes and enhance de novo bone formation, which may be particularly favorable in patients with compromised bone healing capacity or limited donor sites. rhPDGF-BB has been extensively applied for periodontal regenerative procedures and for the treatment of gingival recessions, showing consistent and positive outcomes. Nevertheless, current evidence regarding its benefits at implant and edentulous sites is limited. The present review explores and depicts the current applications, outcomes, and evidence-based clinical recommendations of rhPDGF-BB and rhBMPs for oral tissue regeneration.

Information about complications associated with the use of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and vectors carrying its gene is provided.
