Multiple fibromyxomas of the jaws: A case report

Fibromyxoma of the jaw is a rare benign mesenchymal odontogenic tumor with locally aggressive behavior. In the present report, a 13-year-old female patient presented to our university hospital with delayed eruption of some of her teeth. A panoramic radiograph taken at the initial examination revealed four pericoronal radiolucencies related to the four third molars. Thereafter, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination was performed. After the surgical removal of these molars, the microscopic examination diagnosed the four lesions as fibromyxomas. Here, we have discussed the clinical, panoramic radiography, MRI, and histopathological findings of the case.

Fibromyxoma of the rib: report of a case

We present herein the case of a 36-year-old man with fibromyxoma of the rib. At the age of 33 years, an abnormal shadow of the chest was found on a radiographic examination, subsequent to which the mass grew slowly into the intrathorax, and he was referred to our hospital. An X-ray film and computed tomography scan on admission showed an extrapleural mass, 7 x 5 cm in diameter, in the left sixth rib with no evidence of destruction, cortical expansion, or rupture. The patient underwent peripheral osteotomy of the sixth rib, which was resected with a 3-cm margin around the mass. Microscopically, a diagnosis of fibromyxoma was confirmed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of fibromyxoma originating in a rib.

Fibromyxoma of bone

We report two cases of fibromyxoma, one affecting the iliac crest and the second involving the proximal shaft of the tibia. Fibromyxoma is a rare neoplasm related to benign fibrous tumors and is characterized by exuberant, extracellular, ground substance production. Its histologic appearance is benign and distinctive and can be readily distinguished from that of myxoid chondrosarcoma or chondromyxoid fibroma. The radiographic picture is, however, difficult to interpret, and the entity can be easily mistaken for other tumors.
