Association between physical health status, health behaviors and subjective depression among single-person household

The relationship between depression, self-efficacy, social support, and health-promoting behaviors in Korean single-household women

This descriptive, cross-sectional study purposed to identify the relationship between depression, self-efficacy, social support, and health-promoting behaviors in adult single-household women in Korea. An online survey was completed by 204 adult single-household women in Korea from November to December 2019. The structured questionnaire included items measuring depression, health-related self-efficacy, social support, health-promoting behaviors, and demographic and health-related characteristics. Descriptive statistics were computed, and mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation analyses were conducted. The average age of the participants was 34.38, and the average duration of living alone was 7.13 years. The health-promoting behavior of single-household women scored 125.85 in average within the possible score range of 52-208. It was verified that social support has a moderated mediating effect that regulates the mediating effect in the pathway by which depression affects health-promoting behaviors through self-efficacy. In conclusion, self-efficacy was found to play a mediating role between depression and health-promoting behaviors, and social support had a moderated mediating effect on the path from depression to health-promoting behaviors through self-efficacy. To encourage the health-promoting behaviors of single-household women, interventions targeting both increased social support and self-efficacy are suggested.

Association between Loneliness and Depression among Community-Dwelling Older Women Living Alone in South Korea: The Mediating Effects of Subjective Physical Health, Resilience, and Social Support

Social isolation and loneliness are the key risk factors for depression in late life. Older adults living alone and socially isolated are at greater risk for physical and mental health. This study aims to examine the mediating effects of subjective physical health, resilience, and social support on the association between loneliness and depression among the elderly female population living alone in South Korea. We included a total of 308 older women aged 60 years or older who live alone in a medium-sized city in South Korea. The survey data was collected using the validated survey instruments between November 2015 and April 2016. A parallel mediation model was performed to investigate whether physical health, resilience, and social support had mediating effects on the association of loneliness with depression. The findings of this study showed that loneliness was directly and indirectly associated with depression through its association with the subjective physical health, resilience, and social support among the older female population living alone. Our results suggest the importance of supporting community-based programs to improve physical and mental health of the elderly people as a way to minimize the level of loneliness and prevent depression.

Depression and physical health as serial mediators between interpersonal problems and binge-eating behavior among hospital nurses in South Korea

This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between depression, physical health, interpersonal problems, and binge-eating behavior among South Korean nurses. Self-report questionnaires were answered by 187 nurses from five hospitals. Mediating roles of depression and physical health between interpersonal problems and binge-eating behavior were examined using mediation analyses with bootstrapping. Total and direct effects of interpersonal problems on binge-eating behavior were significant. Indirect effects of path through depression and physical health as mediators, and through single mediation of physical health were significant, while indirect effects through depression were not. Thus, physical health affects nurses' vulnerability to interpersonal problems and binge-eating behavior.
