Relationships among Work Environment, Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intention of Nurses in an Emergency Department

Effects of job embeddedness and nursing working environment on turnover intention among trauma center nurses: A cross-sectional study

AIM

To investigate the effects of job embeddedness and nursing working environment on trauma center nurses' turnover intention.

BACKGROUND

Trauma center nurses have higher average turnover intention than hospital nurses. However, factors that increase the turnover intention of trauma center nurses remain unexplored.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted from August to October 2019, with 120 trauma center nurses working at three trauma centers in B, D, and U cities using measures of demographic characteristics, job embeddedness, nursing working environment, and turnover intention.

RESULTS

The mean turnover intention score was 3.60/5 points. There were significant correlations among turnover intention and fit, sacrifice, foundation for quality nursing, ability and leadership of nursing managers, cooperation of nurses and doctors, nurse participation in hospital management, and sufficient manpower and material support. Turnover intention was predicted by nurse participation in hospital management, gender, clinical experience, and fit, which explained 54%.

CONCLUSIONS

Factors that influence nurses' turnover intention at trauma centers were gender, clinical experience, job fit, and especially, nurses' participation in hospital management, which had the most effect on the nursing working environment.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

To expand participation of trauma center nurses, hospital management systems and organizational culture need improvement.

Job satisfaction, work environment and intent to stay of Jordanian midwives

AIM

The aims of this study were to (1) assess the levels of Jordanian midwives' job satisfaction, intention to stay and work environment; (2) examine the relationship between work environment and intention to stay, and the level of job satisfaction among midwives working in Jordanian hospitals and maternal and child health centres and (3) to investigate the associations between job satisfaction and selected demographic variables among Jordanian midwives.

BACKGROUND

The shortage, turnover and retention of midwives are global problems and Jordan is one of the countries thathas a shortage of midwifery workforce. Job satisfaction is well studied among nurses worldwide; however, there are inadequate studies that have assessed the job satisfaction among midwives including Jordan.

METHODS

A descriptive, correlational design survey was used and a sample of 413 midwives were recruited from 14 different hospital settings (12 governmental and 2 teaching hospitals) and 8 health centres.

RESULTS

The levels of job satisfaction of Jordanian midwives were neither satisfied nor unsatisfied. The overall mean intent to stay at work was between neutral to agree in general. A positive significant correlation was found between job satisfaction, work environment and intent to stay. The work environment was neither a favourable nor an unfavourable. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING, HEALTH AND EDUCATION POLICY: Jordanian midwives have neutral job satisfaction and work environment. Managerial plans and interventions are needed to improve midwives' job satisfaction and to create a favourable work environment which might reflect positively on their work and performance and improve their retention. Policymakers and mangers should enhance midwives' job satisfaction through external reward via salary, vacation and benefits packages. Engaging in research activities, publication and more collaboration with academic staff may improve midwives' professional development. Midwives should take more active roles in hospital affairs and receive more support by their management in Jordan.

Emergency department nurses' experience of performing CPR in South Korea

BACKGROUND

Emergency Department (ED) nurses often confront unexpected cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with little information about the patients.

METHODS

This qualitative study explored the experience of performing CPR among ED nurses. Data collection took place between May and June 2016 using an online advertisement to recruit 17 ED nurses. Each participant was interviewed for 40-90min. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was conducted using a conventional content-analysis method.

RESULTS

Four themes emerged: Pressure from the urgency of the CPR, becoming sharp tempered in addressing personnel during CPR, keeping psychological conflicts of CPR patient care to oneself, and growing as an ED nurse through CPR.

CONCLUSION

ED nurses had anxiety about CPR, regardless of their ability to perform CPR. They also suffered psychologically afterward. ED nurses could benefit from education that promotes their competencies for CPR and support systems to alleviate their psychological distress.
