68 Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET/CT Imaging of Tracheal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

ABSTRACT

A 23-year-old woman presented with a dry cough and dyspnea. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed an intratracheal space-occupying lesion with continuous homogeneous enhancement and airway stenosis. The patient then underwent 68 Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET/CT, which showed increased uptake of FAPI-04 by the lesion. Postoperative pathology confirmed the lesion as tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This case reports a rare site of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and highlights the potential utility of 68 Ga-DOTA-FAPI-04 PET/CT for the diagnosis of tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

A Population-Based Analysis of Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity

OBJECTIVES

To identify survival outcomes for patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the oral cavity and the effects of different prognostic factors on survival.

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective cohort study using a national database.

METHODS

Retrospective, population-based cohort study of patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database who were diagnosed with MEC of the oral cavity from 1973 to 2016. Overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were calculated.

RESULTS

A total of 1693 patients with MEC of the oral cavity were included. Of those, there are 696 males and 997 females, the average age at diagnosis being 52.4 years. The vast majority of cases (86.4%) presented with stage I and stage II disease. A total of 206 patients had received both surgical and radiation therapy (RT), while 1338 patients just had undergone only surgery and 149 with no treatment. On multivariate analysis, advanced age, stage, and histologic grade were associated with worse OS and DSS. Surgical therapy was an independent favorable predictor of OS and DSS. For radiotherapy, multivariate analysis showed that it was associated with worse DSS, whereas there was no significant difference in OS.

CONCLUSION

MEC of the oral cavity is associated with a generally favorable prognosis. Advanced age, stage, and histologic grade were independent negative prognostic factors for survival, and surgery was the main treatment to improve survival.

Initial Experience with Hybrid Argon Plasma Coagulation as a Novel Local Treatment Method for Tracheobronchial Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

Tracheobronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a type of salivary gland tumor. Surgical resection is the main treatment for MEC, but it is associated with risks. Hybrid argon plasma coagulation (HybridAPC®) is an innovative technique combining APC with a water cushion function which can be used for the treatment of MEC. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HybridAPC for MEC in 2 patients diagnosed with MEC based on histological examination of biopsies. Full preoperative assessments were done by white-light bronchoscopy, autofluorescence imaging, narrow-band imaging, and radial probe endobronchial ultrasound. HybridAPC was administered after these evaluations. Both patients were followed up for more than 3 months. HybridAPC ablation was completed successfully, with no complications. HybridAPC thus appears to be a safe and efficient treatment for MEC.

18F-FDG PET/CT Imaging of Tracheal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

A 54-year-old woman presented with dry cough for 3 months. An FDG PET/CT was performed to evaluate a tracheal nodule, which was revealed by chest CT. The PET/CT images showed increased FDG uptake with SUVmax of 3.3 in the known tracheal lesion. The results of pathological examination from the specimen of bronchoscopy were consistent with tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
