Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies show that ketosis caused by the consumption of low-carbohydrate diets improves cognitive functions and that ketogenic diets can be used to treat epilepsy. In vivo and in vitro experiments have shown that ketosis regulates pain, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Thus, we investigated the effects of ketosis induced by a low-carbohydrate diet on muscle soreness, inflammation, and redox status in human subjects. METHODS The research method was an open-label, crossover, pilot study. The study included eight men with no exercise habits associated with muscle soreness and consumed a low-carbohydrate and a normal diet for 6 days. Each dietary intake was for 3 days, and the participants performed the isotonic exercise on the fourth day. Before and after the exercise (immediately after, 24 h later, and 48 h later), the subjective value of muscle soreness, interleukin-6 level, tumor necrosis factor-alpha level, total ketone bodies, and redox status biomarkers were measured. RESULTS The results revealed that the low-carbohydrate-diet group showed no significant difference in the subjective value of muscle soreness, whereas the normal diet group showed a significant increase in the subjective muscle soreness scale after 24 h. There were no significant changes in biomarkers of inflammation and redox status in either group. CONCLUSIONS This result suggests that ketosis caused by consuming a low-carbohydrate diet suppresses delayed-onset muscle soreness. However, the ketosis state did not suppress inflammation or oxidative stress markers.

Abstract
Existing reports on the association between oxidative stress and pulmonary hemodynamics in congenital heart disease (CHD) are limited, and the relationship remains inadequately understood. To address this, we evaluated the link between oxidative stress and hemodynamics in children with left-to-right shunt CHD. We analyzed the derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) in a cohort of 60 children with left-to-right shunt CHD and compared them to 60 healthy, age- and sex-matched controls. In the CHD group, hemodynamics measured by cardiac catheterization were evaluated in relation to d-ROMs. We also assessed the diagnostic performance of the d-ROMs for a pulmonary-to-systemic blood flow ratio (Qp/Qs) of >1.5. We found that the blood d-ROM levels in the CHD group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.001). A significant positive correlation was observed between d-ROMs and Qp/Qs (p < 0.001), d-ROMs and the ratio of the right ventricular end-diastolic volume (p < 0.001), d-ROMs and the mean pulmonary arterial pressure (p < 0.001), and d-ROMs and the ratio of the left ventricular end-diastolic volume (p = 0.007). In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the area under the curve for d-ROMs in predicting Qp/Qs > 1.5 was 0.806 (p < 0.001), which, although not statistically significant, was higher than that of the plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (0.716). These findings indicate that d-ROM levels are closely associated with hemodynamics and the disease severity in patients with left-to-right shunt CHD and may serve as a valuable marker for determining the need for surgical intervention.

Abstract
Olive oil coproducts and their phenolic extracts have shown beneficial effects when added to the diets of food-producing animals, whereas data on their effects on pets are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with olive flour (MOP®) on oxidative blood biomarkers in dogs. Thirty dogs were recruited and divided into two groups. Both groups were fed the same kibble feed twice daily. The treatment group (T) also received canned wet feed supplemented with 11.5 mg/kg of body weight of organic olive flour per day, whereas the control group (C) received the same wet feed without any supplementation. The findings showed that oil-free olive pulp flour supplementation led to a significant decrease in d-ROMs (p < 0.044) in the blood of the T group (from 101.26 to 86.67 U CARR), whereas no significant changes were observed in the C group. An increasing OXY trend was found in the blood of the T group. Polyphenols in olive flour at a dose of 11.5 mg/kg of body weight contributed to lowering the oxidative stress threshold in dogs, reducing the levels of d-ROMs in dogs and leading to increasing trends in the amount of blood antioxidants. The use of olive pulp flour in dog diets has proven to be beneficial for their health and could also reduce the waste associated with olive oil production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), an inflammatory-based dermatological condition often associated with obesity, poses significant challenges in management. The very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) has shown efficacy in addressing obesity, related metabolic disorders, and reducing chronic inflammation. However, its effects on HS remain underexplored. In this prospective pilot study, we aimed to investigate the impact of a 28-day active phase of VLCKD on HS in a sample of treatment-naive women with HS and excess weight. METHODS Twelve women with HS and overweight or obesity (BMI 27.03 to 50.14 kg/m2), aged 21 to 54 years, meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria and agreeing to adhere to VLCKD, were included. Baseline lifestyle habits were assessed. The Sartorius score was used to evaluate the clinical severity of HS. Anthropometric parameters (waist circumference, weight, height, and body mass index), body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis, levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), and derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (dROMs) were assessed at baseline and after 28 days of the active phase of VLCKD. RESULTS VLCKD led to general improvements in anthropometric parameters and body composition. Notably, a significant reduction in the Sartorius score was observed after the intervention (Δ%: - 24.37 ± 16.64, p < 0.001). This reduction coincided with significant decreases in TMAO (p < 0.001), dROMs (p = 0.001), and oxLDL (p < 0.001) levels. Changes in the Sartorius score exhibited positive correlations with changes in TMAO (p < 0.001), dROMs (p < 0.001), and oxLDL (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION The 28-day active phase of VLCKD demonstrated notable improvements in HS severity and associated metabolic markers, highlighting the potential utility of VLCKD in managing HS and its association with metabolic derangements in women with overweight or obesity.

Abstract
DPP-4 inhibitors are frequently used as first-line agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in Japan. This study aimed to examine the effects of vildagliptin on glucose metabolism and arterial stiffness. Twenty treatment-naïve patients with type 2 diabetes (8 males and 12 females) received vildagliptin 50 mg twice daily for 6 months. Self-monitored blood glucose measurements and a 75 g OGTT were performed. Arterial stiffness was assessed using the CAVI. After the vildagliptin treatment, a significant decrease in the median HbA1c (from 8.3 to 6.4%) and fasting HOMA-β (from 26.1 to 34.5%), and a marginally significant decrease in the CAVI (from 8.9 to 8.4, p = 0.087) were observed. The glycemic variability parameters also improved, whereas the insulin sensitivity and oxidative stress remained unchanged. Participants with a lower glycemic variability on the 75 g OGTT after vildagliptin treatment showed a significant decrease in their CAVI. The baseline BMI was significantly higher for the participants with a decreased CAVI than in those with no change in their CAVI (24.5 vs. 20.8 kg/m2). After vildagliptin treatment, a decrease in the CAVI was observed, especially in the individuals with improved glycemic variability on the 75 g OGTT. Vildagliptin may be suitable for vascular protection in individuals with high glycemic variability and/or an elevated BMI.

Abstract
COVID-19 is mainly described as endothelial dysfunction, and due to the bidirectional link between oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction, we initiated a program directed to the evaluation of the oxidative status of the population of Rwanda by measuring spectrophotometrically their plasma Reactive Oxygen Metabolites (d-ROMs) and Plasma Antioxidant Potential (PAT). The reference population was chosen to reflect the absence of actual or past SARS-CoV-2 infections as well as other clinically established infective status and reference intervals for d-ROM and PAT were identified. The average d-ROM was 378.6 UCARR with a standard deviation of 105.2, a value significantly higher than that reported for Caucasian or East Asian population (260-300 UCARR). The average PAT value was 2853.6, with a standard deviation of 635.7 UCOR, at the upper limit according to the averaged values for healthy Caucasian populations. The results of this study, the first so far reported on a sub-Saharan population, can effectively be used as a baseline value for clinical management of inflammatory conditions, for the stratification of at-risk individuals and to inform recommendations for effective use of public health resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is characterized by an early decline in ovarian function, inducing secondary amenorrhea. While the cause of POI has not yet been identified, the function of mitochondria in the ovaries and the cytotoxicity associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in follicle pool depletion and a decline in follicle quality. Recently developed tests have enabled easy measurement of diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP). The combination of these two tests is used to comprehensively assess oxidative stress in the blood.
AIM To comprehensively assess the oxidative stress of d-ROMs and BAP in POI.
METHODS Participants were classified into two groups: A POI group of 11 women aged < 40 years examined between January 2021 and June 2022 with a history of secondary amenorrhea for at least 4 mo in our hospital and an FSH value of ≥ 40 mIU/mL; and a control group of healthy women of the same age with normal ovarian function in our hospital. Plasma d-ROMs and BAP were measured in both these groups underwent. Differences between groups were assessed using the t-test.
RESULTS The mean age and mean body mass index (BMI) were 35.8 ± 3.0 years and 20.1 ± 1.9 kg/m2 in the control group and 35.8 ± 2.7 years and 19.4 ± 2.5 kg/m2 in the POI group, respectively. The mean gravidity and parity in control and POI groups were 0.6 ± 0.7 and 0.4 ± 0.5 and 0.6 ± 0.9 and 0.3 ± 0.5, respectively. The two groups did not differ significantly in terms of mean age, BMI, gravidity, or parity. The d-ROMs level was significantly higher in the POI group than in the control group (478.2 ± 58.7 vs 341.1 ± 35.1 U.CARR; P < 0.001); however, the BAP level did not significantly differ between the two groups (2078.5 ± 157.4 vs 2029.0 ± 186.4 μmol/L). The oxidase stress index (d-ROMs/BAP × 100) was significantly higher in the POI group than in the control group (23.7 ± 3.3 vs 16.5 ± 2.1; P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION Oxidative stress was significantly greater in the POI group than in the control group, suggesting oxidative stress as a factor that can serve as a POI biomarker.

Abstract
Oxidative stress participates in the development and exacerbation of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The ability to promptly quantify an imbalance in an individual reductive-oxidative (RedOx) state could improve cardiovascular risk assessment and management. Derivatives-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) are an emerging biomarker of oxidative stress quantifiable in minutes through standard biochemical analysers or by a bedside point-of-care test. The current review evaluates available data on the prognostic value of d-ROMs for CVD events and mortality in individuals with known and unknown CVD. Outcome studies involving small and large cohorts were analysed and hazard ratio, risk ratio, odds ratio, and mean differences were used as measures of effect. High d-ROM plasma levels were found to be an independent predictor of CVD events and mortality. Risk begins increasing at d-ROM levels higher than 340 UCARR and rises considerably above 400 UCARR. Conversely, low d-ROM plasma levels are a good negative predictor for CVD events in patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure. Moreover, combining d-ROMs with other relevant biomarkers routinely used in clinical practice might support a more precise cardiovascular risk assessment. We conclude that d-ROMs represent an emerging oxidative-stress-related biomarker with the potential for better risk stratification both in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention.

Abstract
Renal hypouricemia is a disease caused by the dysfunction of renal urate transporters. This disease is known to cause exercise-induced acute kidney injury, but its mechanism has not yet been established. To analyze the mechanism by which hypouricemia causes renal failure, we conducted a semi-ischemic forearm exercise stress test to mimic exercise conditions in five healthy subjects, six patients with renal hypouricemia, and one patient with xanthinuria and analyzed the changes in purine metabolites. The results showed that the subjects with renal hypouricemia had significantly lower blood hypoxanthine levels and increased urinary hypoxanthine excretion after exercise than healthy subjects. Oxidative stress markers did not differ between healthy subjects and hypouricemic subjects before and after exercise, and no effect of uric acid as a radical scavenger was observed. As hypoxanthine is a precursor for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production via the salvage pathway, loss of hypoxanthine after exercise in patients with renal hypouricemia may cause ATP loss in the renal tubules and consequent tissue damage.

Oxidant and Antioxidant Parameters' Assessment Together with Homocysteine and Muscle Enzymes in Racehorses: Evaluation of Positive Effects of Exercise. Antioxidants (Basel) 2022; 11:antiox11061176. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the changes in serum oxidant and antioxidant parameters together with the serum values of homocysteine (Hcy) and muscle enzymes including creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in regularly trained athletic horses during official races of 1200, 1600 and 2000 m. Thirty Thoroughbred horses were divided into three groups of 10 subjects each according to the race distance: Group 1, 1200 m race; Group 2, 1600 m race; Group 3, 2000 m race. Blood samples were collected from horses 1 week prior to the race (1WB), on the day of the race at rest (TREST), immediately after the race (TPOST), and after 30 (TPOST30) and 120 (TPOST120) minutes. Serum total proteins, reactive oxygen metabolites (dROMs), thiol antioxidant barrier (SHp), antioxidant barrier (Oxy-ads), Hcy, CK, AST and LDH values were assessed. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA did not show differences referable to the race distance (Group effect) on all investigated parameters (p > 0.05). An exercise effect on oxidative stress markers, Hcy and muscle enzymes herein investigated was found in all groups (p < 0.001). A Pearson’s test showed dROMs positively correlated with SHp, Oxy-ads and Hcy after exercise (p < 0.05). This study suggests that, though well-trained racing horses are subjected to oxidative stress during a race, a proper antioxidant capacity may improve their ability to cope with exercise-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cross-sectional studies have consistently shown an association between current smoking and oxidative stress biomarkers. However, no longitudinal studies have been performed so far. METHODS The oxidative stress biomarkers "total thiol groups of serum proteins" (TTP), and "derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites" (D-ROM) were measured in serum samples of 3835 participants of a population-based, German cohort study of older adults (age: 60-84 years) with repeated measurements for 2834 participants three years later. Multivariable linear regression models were applied and β-coefficients with 95% confidence intervals were obtained. RESULTS In both cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis, current smoking was statistically significantly associated with increased D-ROM levels, and a dose-response relationship between the amount of daily tobacco consumption and the D-ROM concentrations was observed that plateaued at ≥15 g of tobacco consumption per day. Former smoking was also associated with D-ROM levels. Only former smokers who quitted smoking more than 10 years ago had no increased D-ROM levels compared to never smokers. There was neither a cross-sectional nor longitudinal association between any of the smoking variables and TTP levels. CONCLUSION This large population-based cohort of older German adults suggests that smoking has long-term effects on the oxidative stress burden. The further increasing D-ROM levels of current smokers at an older age and the observation that it may take more than 10 years until the redox balance is restored are solid arguments for quitting smoking as soon as possible at any age.

Abstract
[Purpose] Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by prolonged high-intensity exercise can cause structural and functional damage. Antioxidant polyphenol supplementation, which reduces ROS levels, may improve high-intensity exercise performance. We evaluated the effect of lychee fruit extract, which contains high levels of low-molecular-weight oligomerized polyphenols, on high-intensity exercise performance. [Methods] Ten male athletes were included in an open-label trial that consisted of control and intervention phases, with a 7-day washout period between phases. The participants were administered oligomerized lychee fruit extract for seven days, whereas no intervention was given in the control phase. High-intensity intermittent exercise and the Wingate test were performed. The power output, blood lactate levels, reactive oxygen metabolite levels, biological antioxidant potential, heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion were measured. [Results] The average power output was significantly higher in the intervention phase than in the control phase (P < 0.01), while the change in blood lactate levels was significantly lower in the intervention phase than in the control phase (P < 0.05). The average heart rate was significantly higher in the intervention phase than in the control phase (P < 0.05), without changing the rate of perceived exertion. Although there was no difference in reactive oxygen metabolite levels between the phase, the change in biological antioxidant potential was larger in the intervention phase than in the control phase (P = 0.06). The Wingate test showed no significant differences between the phase. [Conclusion] Short-term loading with oligomerized lychee fruit extract may increase performance during high-intensity intermittent exercise by improving metabolism.

Abstract
Aims Oxidative stress plays an important role in the development and progression of heart failure (HF). Although exercise and oxidative stress are closely related, the effect of acute exercise on reactive oxygen species production and the fluctuation on prognosis are unclear. Methods and results We enrolled 94 patients who were hospitalized for worsening HF (mean age 68.0 ± 14.5 years old, 63.8% male). The changes in diacron‐reactive oxygen metabolites (d‐ROM) values, a marker of oxidative stress, before and after a cardiopulmonary exercise test were considered as Δd‐ROM. The mean follow‐up period was 24 ± 13 months, during which 15 patients had all‐cause death or left ventricular assist system implantation. Kaplan–Meier analysis demonstrated that all‐cause death or left ventricular assist system implantation was significantly higher in the Δd‐ROM‐positive group than in the Δd‐ROM‐negative group (log‐rank P = 0.047). Elevated Δd‐ROM levels were associated with increased mortality risk. Multivariate analysis adjusted for body mass index and peak oxygen uptake revealed that Δd‐ROM was an independent prognostic factor of adverse events (Tertile 3 vs. 1; hazard ratio: 4.57; 95% confidence interval: 1.21–29.77; P = 0.022). Conclusions Patients with HF who underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test and had an increased oxidative stress marker level had a poor prognosis. The appropriate exercise intensity could be determined by evaluating the changes in oxidative stress status in response to acute exercise in patients with HF.

Abstract
Background We investigated the clinical significance of derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (DROMs), a new marker of reactive oxygen species, in patients with nonischemic heart failure (HF) and compared them among new categories of HF. Methods and Results We recruited 201 consecutively hospitalized patients with HF and measured DROM under stable conditions. Then, we divided them according to new categories of HF (HF with reduced ejection fraction [EF], HF with midrangeEF, and HF with preserved EF) without coronary artery disease. In subgroup analysis, we followed EF changes in patients with HF with reduced EF and classified them into HF with recovered EF or nonrecovered EF according to whether EF had improved to >40%. DROMs are significantly and independently associated with HF-related events in patients with NIHF. There were no significant differences in DROM and the probability of HF-related events among HF categories in Kaplan-Meier analysis. However, patients with HF with reduced EF and HF with preserved EF but not HF with midrange EF with HF-related events had higher DROM than those without HF-related events. In subgroup analysis, Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that the probabilities of HF-related events in HF with recovered EF were dramatically decreased. DROM were significantly higher in patients with HF with nonrecovered EF than in HF with recovered EF. In receiver operating characteristic analysis, the cutoff level of DROM for predicting improvements in HF with recovered EF was 347 Carratelli units. Furthermore, the C-statistic value for predicting EF improvement for the DROM levels was 0.703. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, DROM was independently and significantly associated with the prediction of HF with recovered EF. Conclusions DROM measurements can provide important prognostic information for risk stratification in any category of NIHF. Abstract
Exercise increases oxidative stress, leading the body to strengthen its antioxidant defenses, thus reducing the incidence of major diseases. As these associations are relatively unclear for ordinary levels of exercise for reduced stress, this study evaluated the effects of different exercise conditions on diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), and subjective mood. Forty-nine students (22.4 ± 2.6 years) were assessed using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) before and after exercising for 60 min. Participants were divided into two groups: Group A engaged in compulsory sports and Group B in freely chosen sports. d-ROMs and BAP were measured, and their modified ratio was calculated as an index of antioxidant potential. Physiological evaluation showed significant improvements in BAP and the BAP/d-ROMs ratio, irrespective of exercise condition (p < 0.001, p < 0.01). Comparison between the exercise conditions revealed a significant difference in the modified ratio (p < 0.02). In mood assessment, scores on emotion-related scales without vigor improved significantly under both exercise conditions (p < 0.001). Mental changes were evident after exercise, and potential antioxidant capacity was higher in freely chosen sports (p < 0.03). Assessment of antioxidant status before and after exercise may provide an objective index of mental and physical conditioning.

Abstract
One of the novel interesting topics in the study of cardiovascular disease is the role of the oxidation system, since inflammation and oxidative stress are known to lead to cardiovascular diseases, their progression and complications. During decades of research, many complex interactions between agents of oxidative stress, oxidation, and antioxidant systems have been elucidated, and numerous important pathophysiological links to na number of disorders and diseases have been established. This review article will present the most relevant knowledge linking oxidative stress to vascular dysfunction and disease. The review will focus on the role of oxidative stress in endotheleial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and other pathogenetic processes and mechanisms that contribute to the development of ischemic heart disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the clinical significance of the derivative of reactive oxygen metabolites (DROM), a new marker of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (HFrEF). METHODS AND RESULTS Serum DROM concentrations were measured in 201 consecutive patients with HFrEF (EF < 50%) in stable condition. DROM values were significantly higher in patients with HFrEF than in risk-matched patients without HF (P < 0.01). They also correlated significantly with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and B-type natriuretic peptide. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated significantly higher probabilities of HF-related events in the high-DROM group than in the low-DROM group (log-rank test, P < 0.01). Multivariable Cox hazard analysis revealed that DROM were independent and significant predictors of cardiovascular events. In a subgroup analysis, DROM levels were also measured at the aortic root and coronary sinus in 49 patients. The transcardiac gradient of DROM values was significantly higher in patients with HFrEF than in patients without HF (P = 0.04), indicating an association between DROM production in the coronary circulation and HFrEF development. Changes in DROM following optimal therapy were significantly associated with LVEF improvement (r = 0.34, P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS The higher levels of DROM and their association with cardiovascular events suggest the clinical benefit of DROM measurements in the risk stratification of patients with HFrEF.

Abstract
Background: Nonagenarians and centenarians (NCs) are an extremely fragile population, particularly in regard to their physical and cognitive function. The aim of this study was to define the neurocognitive profiles among 29 NCs and their 49 younger cohabitants aged 50-75 years from The Cilento Initiative on Aging Outcomes (CIAO) Pilot study in the South of Italy that had provided initial hypotheses regarding positive psychological traits related to exceptional longevity. Methods: During the home visits, lifestyle information with specific questionnaires, functional autonomy and the neuropsychological Mini Mental Scale Examination (MMSE), and the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive (ADAS-Cog) scale were obtained by qualified study personnel. The total blood oxidative capacity was also determined by testing the reactive derivative of oxygen metabolites (d-ROM) and by the Biological Antioxidant Potential (BAP). In all individuals, the APOE genotype determination was also performed. Results: All the subjects in both groups showed high adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. None of the NCs had severe cognitive impairment, and a very low incidence of dementia was found. The data obtained on the Activities ed Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL-IADL) scale showed that the majority of NCs (16/29) were autonomous in daily life activities. The comparative assessment of NCs and cohabitants showed no significant differences in the laboratory assessment of oxidative stress and APOE genotype. Conclusion: In the Cilento Region of Southern Italy, NCs seemed to have good cognitive status when compared to younger cohabitants aging 50-65 years without significant differences in oxidative stress markers or APOE genotype. These results might be related to optimal adherence to the Mediterranean diet, although other lifestyle factors and positive personality traits may also contribute to their healthy aging. Further studies on a larger population should be performed to confirm the results of this pilot study.

Abstract
The duathlon is an endurance multisport event that consists of sequential running, cycling, and further running. Imbalance in the redox homeostasis is associated with fatigued status and underperformance in various sports; however, there are no corresponding reports regarding the duathlon. The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in the blood redox balance during a simulated duathlon race and to determine the relationship between performance and the redox balance. Eight male triathletes participated in a simulated race, consisting of a 5-km run, 30 km cycling, and a further 5-km run, with 5 min rest between two parts to collect the blood samples. The serum levels of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and biological antioxidant potential (BAP) were measured and BAP/d-ROMs ratio and oxidative stress index (OSI) were calculated. The d-ROMs levels after the first Run were significantly increased compared with the levels observed before the race. Moreover, BAP levels increased significantly over the race. The BAP/d-ROMs ratio also gradually increased through the race, while the OSI was gradually decreased. In addition, a significant relationship was observed only between d-ROMs levels after the first Run and the first Run performance. These results suggest that the redox balance shifts toward reduction (antioxidation) during the duathlon race and increased oxidant potential levels are negatively correlated with performance in the early stages of the race.

Abstract
Background: Oxidative stress is crucial in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Under the generic terms “oxidative stress” (OS), many biomarkers belonging to different pathways have been proposed. Aim: To compare the levels of recently proposed OS-related parameters in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stable coronary artery disease (CAD), to evaluate their effectiveness as additive risk or illness indicators of stable and acute ischemic events, and their response over time during the course of AMI. Methods: 76 ACS, 77 CAD patients, and 63 controls were enrolled in the study. Different OS-related biomarkers, including reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM), the total antioxidant capacity (OXY), nitrite/nitrate (final nitric oxide products, NOx), and Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1), were evaluated. Moreover, time response during AMI course (admission, and 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 48 hours after, T0-T6, respectively) and correlation with traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, smoking habit) were also assessed. Results: Over time, ROM progressively increased while OXY and NOx decreased. Kinetics of LOX-1 during AMI shows that this biomarker boosts early during the acute event (T1 and T2) and then progressively decreases, being significantly lower from T0 to T6. Different OS-related biomarkers were differentially associated with CV risk factors and CAD or ACS presence. Conclusion: Differences in OS-related biomarkers (between groups, according to the response over time during AMI, and to the presence of CV risk factors) confirmed OS involvement in the transition from healthy status to stable CAD and ACS, although evidencing the heterogeneous nature of redox processes. In future, a multi-marker panel including different biomarkers and pathways of oxidative stress could be evaluated as an additive tool to be used in the CV prevention, diagnosis, patient stratification, and treatment.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress has recently been shown to play an important role in the development of arteriosclerosis in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD); however, no study has investigated this association in early childhood patients with KD. In this study, we evaluated prospectively the association between the levels of oxidative stress and the endothelial function in early childhood patients with KD. Methods We compared the derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM), flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), and biological characteristics in a population of 50 children: 10 patients with KD and coronary artery lesions (CAL) (group 1), 15 KD patients without CAL (group 2), and 25 healthy age- and sex-matched children (group 3). Results The median age of all KD children at study enrollment was 6.8 (IQR 4.4–8.2) years. ROM levels were significantly higher in group 1 (p < 0.001) and group 2 (p = 0.004) than in group 3. The %FMD of group 1 (p < 0.001) and group 2 (p = 0.026) was significantly lower than that of group 3. There was a significant negative correlation between ROM and %FMD (r = − 0.60, p < 0.001). A multiple linear regression analysis identified ln-ROM (standardized coefficient = − 0.403, p = 0.043) and total fever duration (standardized coefficient = − 0.413, p = 0.038) as significant determinants of %FMD in the patients with KD. Conclusions Our study suggests that oxidative stress is strongly associated with endothelial dysfunction in early childhood patients with KD. Furthermore, we found that the longer the fever duration, the higher the risk of oxidative stress-induced endothelial dysfunction in these children.

Abstract
Background: The hyperoxidative and a modified inflammatory state in obese individuals cause higher susceptibility to bacterial infection which influences the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. Aim: Our study was aimed to evaluate the role of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on the clinical parameters such as gingival index (GI), plaque index, pocket probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL), plasma-reactive oxygen metabolite (ROM) levels, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) resistin and serum resistin levels in obese or overweight and normal weight individuals with periodontitis. Material and Methods: Sixty individuals of age between 35 and 45 years of both the sexes were selected and categorized into two groups as thirty overweight or obese individuals with chronic periodontitis (Group I) and thirty normal weight individuals with chronic periodontitis (Group II). Clinical parameters, plasma ROM levels, and serum and GCF resistin levels were assessed at baseline and 2 months after periodontal therapy in both the groups and compared. Results: Intergroup comparison of clinical parameters (GI, CAL, PPD) 2 months after therapy showed a significant difference with more reduction in Group II compared to Group I. On comparison, mean plasma ROM, GCF, and serum resistin levels at baseline was higher in Group I compared to Group II. When plasma ROM, GCF, and serum resistin levels were compared 2 months after therapy, the reduction was more in Group II compared to Group I. Conclusion: It is concluded that along with periodontal therapy, motivation of patients for weight reduction program is mandatory for obese or overweight individuals with periodontitis in order to improve periodontal health.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress is involved in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, and hyperglycemia is known to increase oxidative stress, which injures the endothelium and accelerates atherosclerosis. To clarify the relation between oxidative stress, diabetes mellitus (DM), and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), we evaluated and compared time-specific oxidative stress after AMI in patients with and without DM by simple measurement of derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) levels as indices of reactive oxygen species production. Methods Sixty-eight AMI patients were enrolled (34 non-DM patients and 34 DM patients). Using the FRAS4 free radical analytical system, we measured d-ROMs levels in each patient at two time points: 1 and 2 weeks after AMI onset. Results d-ROM levels decreased significantly between week 1 and week 2 (from 475.4 ± 119.4 U.CARR to 367.7 ± 87.9 U.CARR, p < 0.001) in the non-DM patients but did not change in the DM patients (from 463.1 ± 109.3 U.CARR to 461.7 ± 126.8 U.CARR, p = 0.819). Moreover, significant correlation was found in the total patient group between d-ROMs levels at 1 week and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (r = 0.376, p = 0.041) and between d-ROM levels at 2 weeks and 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test glucose levels (r = 0.434, p < 0.001). Conclusions Exposure to oxidative stress is greater in AMI patients with DM than AMI patients without DM. Our study results suggest that it is the continuous hyperglycemia that increases oxidative stress in these patients, causing endothelial dysfunction and accelerating atherosclerosis. However, long-term follow up study is needed to assess whether the increased oxidative stress affects patient outcomes. Abstract
Risk stratification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is clinically important because such patients are at high risk of cardiovascular events. Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) are reported to be closely associated with the pathophysiology of CKD, there are few useful ROS biomarkers known for CKD patients. Hence, our objectives in this study were to investigate whether serum derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (DROM), a novel biomarker of ROS, is involved in the pathophysiology of CKD (case-control study), and is a significant predictor of future cardiovascular events in CKD patients (follow-up study).Patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) were enrolled and underwent coronary angiography. Patients with CKD (estimated glomerular filtration ratio <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and/or proteinuria, n = 324) were compared with those without CKD (non-CKD). Serum DROM was measured at stable conditions. A case-control study of the 324 CKD patients and 263 non-CKD patients was conducted after matching risk factors, and a follow-up study of the 324 CKD patients was performed. CKD patients were divided into low- and high-DROM groups using their median value (348 unit; called the Carratelli unit [U.CARR]), and followed until the occurrence of cardiovascular events.DROM levels were significantly higher in risk factors-matched CKD patients than in risk factors-matched non-CKD patients (347.0 [301.8-391.8] U.CARR vs. 338.5 [299.8-384.3] U.CARR, P = 0.03). During mean 23 ± 14 months follow-up of 324 CKD patients, 83 cardiovascular events were recorded. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated a higher probability of cardiovascular events in CKD patients with high DROM than in those with low DROM (P < 0.001, log-rank test). Multivariate Cox hazard analysis including significant predictors in simple Cox hazard analysis demonstrated that high DROM was a significant and independent predictor of cardiovascular events in CKD patients (hazard ratio: 1.76, 95% confidence interval: 1.10-2.82, P = 0.02).In conclusion, serum DROM values were significant and independent predictors of cardiovascular events in CKD patients, indicating that the measurements of DROM might provide clinical benefits for risk stratification of CKD patients.

Abstract
Background Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are associated with development of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, there's no useful biomarker of ROS in CAD. Methods and Results We recruited 395 consecutive CAD patients who were performed coronary angiography (262 male and 133 female, age 70.2±10), and we measured serum derivatives of reactive oxidative metabolites (DROM) were measured. Two hundred twenty‐seven non‐CAD patients were also enrolled. We performed follow‐up study in these 395 CAD patients and case‐control study after risk factor and 1:1 pair matching (both, n=163). As subgroup analysis, DROM were also measured at the aortic root and the coronary sinus in 59 CAD patients. DROM were significantly higher in CAD patients (n=163, median [inter‐quartile range, IQR]=338 [302 to 386]) than in risk factor‐matched non‐CAD patients (n=163, 311 [282 to 352.5], effect size=0.33, P<0.001). During a mean follow‐up period of 20 months of 395 CAD patients, 83 cardiovascular events were recorded. Kaplan‐Meier analysis showed a higher probability of cardiovascular events in the high‐DROM group (>346 U.CARR) than in the low‐DROM group (≤346 U.CARR) (P=0.001 [log‐rank test]). Multivariate Cox hazard analysis identified ln‐DROM as an independent predictor for cardiovascular events (hazard ratio: 10.8, 95% confidence interval: 2.76 to 42.4, P=0.001). The transcardiac gradient of DROM was significantly higher in CAD patients than in non‐CAD patients (−2.0 [−9.0 to 9.0] versus 8 [−8.0 to 28.3], effect size=0.21, P=0.04), indicating that DROM production in coronary circulation is associated with development of CAD. Conclusion DROM are increased in CAD patients and associated with future cardiovascular events. DROM might provide clinical benefits for risk stratification of CAD. Abstract
PURPOSE Increased levels of oxidative stress have been seen in animal models of dry eye and in the conjunctival epithelial cells of patients with Sjögren's syndrome. The aims of this study were to compare the levels of oxidative stress in patients with dry eye and patients without dry eye and to evaluate the effects of treatment with preservative-free eye drops containing hyaluronic acid 0.15 % and vitamin B12 on oxidative stress and dry eye symptoms. METHODS Three cohorts of patients who were to undergo planned cataract surgery were enrolled: patients with dry eye randomized to either no treatment (n = 29) or treatment (n = 32) with hyaluronic acid/vitamin B12 eye drops, and patients without dry eye (n = 42). Patients were assessed by Schirmer's type I test, fluorescein clearance test (FCT), Break Up Time (BUT), and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Lipid peroxidation, a marker of oxidative stress, was assessed by LP-CHOLOX test. RESULTS Compared with patients without dry eye, patients with dry eye had significantly increased levels of oxidative stress, higher OSDI and FCT scores, and significantly lower Schirmer's test and BUT scores. Treatment with eye drops containing hyaluronic acid 0.15 % and vitamin B12 was associated with significantly reduced levels of oxidative stress and OSDI and FCT scores and significantly increased Schirmer's test and BUT scores. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that oxidative stress is associated with dry eye and that hyaluronic acid/vitamin B12 eye drops may attenuate oxidative stress and inflammation, improving dry eye symptoms. Further study in controlled clinical trials is warranted.

Abstract
[Purpose] This study examined how exercise capacity and the
oxidative stress regulation system are affected by different amounts of dietary Ubiquinol
(reduced form of coenzyme Q10, H2CoQ10: QH) over the long term. [Subjects and
Methods] Twenty-three senescence-accelerated mouse P1 (SAMP1) mice were randomly divided
into two groups: one consuming a relatively high amount of QH (300 mg/kg; Group A) and the
other a relatively low amount (30 mg/kg, Group B). Food and tap water were provided ad
libitum. Both groups were made to run on a treadmill until exhaustion, and total running
duration was measured. For the oxidative stress regulation system, the d-ROM test value
(degree of oxidative stress) and BAP test value (antioxidant potential) were measured in a
resting state, and then the BAP/d-ROM ratio (B/R ratio) was calculated. The values of
plasma QH and plasma ubiquinone (plasma oxidized form of CoQ10) were also measured, and
the reduced ratio was calculated. Measurements were taken 3 times: at the start of the
study when the animals were 39 weeks old (baseline), after consumption of QH for 7 months
(7 mo), and after consumption of QH for 10 months (10 mo). [Results] The senescence score
at 10 mo was significantly lower in Group A. Comparison of the mean percentage change in
running time showed a difference of 15.1% between the 2 groups. At 10 mo, the d-ROM test
value was significantly increased and the B/R ratio was significantly decreased in Group
B. Significant increases in the plasma QH value and reduced ratio were seen in Group A.
[Conclusion] Group A showed a greater decrease in the d-ROM test and increase in the
reduced ratio than Group B. Thus, a dose-dependent effect of QH consumption was
demonstrated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress has been postulated as an additive factor linking obesity to cardiovascular disease. MATERIALS & METHODS Derivatives of reactive oxygen species metabolites (d-ROMs) were measured in 136 obese (42 males, 94 females; mean age: 47 ± 12 years; BMI: 36 ± 5 kg/m(2)) and in 306 over- and normal-weight subjects (112 males, 194 females; age: 47 ± 12 years; BMI: 24 ± 3 kg/m(2)). RESULTS d-ROMs levels were higher in obese than in over- and normal-weight subjects (395 ± 104 vs 362 ± 102 and 351 ± 84 arbitrary units (AU); p < 0.001), in women than males (390 ± 104 vs 327 ± 68 AU; p < 0.001), in subjects with than those without hypertension (390 ± 103 vs 360 ± 95 AU; p < 0.01) and in smokers than former and nonsmokers (380 ± 97 vs 358 ± 97 AU; p < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between d-ROMs and BMI (r = 0.25; p < 0.001) and age (r = 0.13; p < 0.01). Levels of d-ROM (>75th percentile: 420 AU) remained as an independent obesity predictor (odds ratio: 2.5; p < 0.001) in women. Continuous variables are reported as mean ± standard deviation. CONCLUSION d-ROMs are a powerful obesity predictor, and could represent a reliable tool in obesity and cardiovascular risk evaluation, especially in women.

Abstract
Renal denervation has developed as a new treatment strategy for patients suffering from resistant hypertension. The success of this therapy is due to the fact that sympathetic hyperactivity is involved in the pathogenesis of elevated blood pressure. However, not only the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), but also the renin angiotensin system (RAS) is known to be involved in hypertension. In addition, RAS is involved in other sympathetic hyperactivity states, such as heart failure, chronic kidney disease, insulin resistance and obstructive sleep apnea. Moreover, renal denervation has a beneficial effect on patients suffering from these disease states. Recent research suggested that the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is elevated in sympathetic hyperactivity states, and that ROS are able to activate the SNS and local tissue renin angiotensin system. Therefore, this review discusses the possibility of ROS as a common trigger of SNS and RAS activity in sympathetic hyperactivity states, and the effect of renal denervation on this ROS production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic periodontitis (CP) is associated with increased levels of blood reactive oxygen species (ROS). So, treatment of CP may lead to decrease in blood ROS. However, not much literature is available comparing the effect of surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatment on blood ROS levels. Reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) are a useful measure of blood ROS. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of periodontal treatment on plasma ROM levels in CP patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty CP patients and 15 controls were monitored. Plasma samples were collected at baseline and the clinical parameters were recorded. The CP patients were randomly divided into two groups: Scaling and root planing (Group II) and periodontal flap surgery (Group III). Both groups were re-evaluated 1 and 2 months after therapy. Clinical parameters were reviewed, plasma samples collected, and ROM levels were determined using a spectrophotometric technique. RESULTS At baseline, the ROM levels for Group II and Group III were 519.8 ± 62.4 and 513.4 ± 74.7 CARR U, respectively, which were higher than Group I value (282.9 ± 23.9, P < 0.001). Periodontal treatment in CP patients resulted in improvement of clinical parameters and a highly significant reduction in plasma ROM level (P < 0.001) after 2 months. Also, there was a more significant reduction in plasma ROM levels in Group III as compared to Group II (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In CP patients, surgical periodontal treatment was more effective in lowering the plasma ROM levels than when non-surgical periodontal treatment was performed alone and, therefore, may be more beneficial in reducing systemic oxidative stress.

Abstract
The present study aimed to clarify changes of oxidative stress and antioxidative
functions in treadmill-exercised Thoroughbred horses (n=5, 3 to 7 years old), using
recently developed techniques for measurement of serum d-ROMs for oxidative stress, and
BAP for antioxidative markers. Also, the effect of nasogastric administration of
hydrogen-rich water (HW) or placebo water preceding the treadmill exercise on these
parameters was examined. Each horse was subjected to a maximum level of treadmill exercise
in which the horses were exhausted at an average speed of 13.2 ± 0.84 m/sec. Blood samples
were taken 4 times, immediately before the intake of HW or placebo water at 30 min
preceding the treadmill exercise, immediately before the exercise (pre-exercise),
immediately after the exercise (post-exercise) and at 30 min following the exercise. In
all horses, both d-ROMs and BAP values significantly increased at post-exercise. The
increase in d-ROMs tended to be lower in the HW trial, as compared to the placebo trial at
pre-exercise. The increase in BAP was considerable at approximately 150% of the
pre-exercise values in both the HW and placebo treatment trials. The BAP/d-ROMs ratio was
significantly elevated at post-exercise in both treatment trials, while a significant
elevation was also observed at pre-exercise in the HW trial. BAP, d-ROM, and the BAP/d-ROM
ratio tended to decline at 30 min after the exercise, except BAP and BAP/d-ROMs in the
placebo trial. These results demonstrate that the marked elevation of oxidative stress and
anitioxidative functions occurred simultaneously in the intensively exercised horses, and
suggest a possibility that HW has some antioxidative efficacy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) is a high-density lipoprotein-associated antioxidant enzyme. The Q192R polymorphism of the PON1 gene can protect against oxidative conditions, but the relationship between Q192R polymorphism and oxidative stress-related markers remains controversial. In this study, the diacron reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) test was used to investigate the relationship between Q192R polymorphism and oxidative stress-related markers in Japanese subjects. METHODS Patients without a history of overt cardiovascular disease who were not receiving antioxidant medication were enrolled in a cross-sectional clinic-based study. An allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method was used to assess the PON1 Q192R polymorphism and compare the level of d-ROMs between genotypes. RESULTS A total of 103 subjects were analysed. The RR genotype was associated with a significantly lower level of d-ROMs than the RQ and QQ genotypes. After multivariate analysis the relationship between the genotypes and level of d-ROMs remained independently significant. CONCLUSIONS The RR genotype may be protective against oxidative stress in cardiovascular diseasefree Japanese subjects. In addition, the d-ROMs test can be useful for examining the role of the PON1 Q192R polymorphism under oxidative conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study investigated the correlation between diacron reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in subjects with or without metabolic syndrome. METHODS Cardiometabolic risk factors, d-ROMs and hs-CRP were determined in 457 women: 123 with metabolic syndrome and 334 without metabolic syndrome. The correlation between d-ROMs and hs-CRP levels was compared between the two groups. RESULTS The group with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher d-ROMs and hs-CRP levels than the group without metabolic syndrome. While the d-ROMs level was significantly and positively correlated with the hs-CRP level in both groups, the correlation level between the two groups was significantly different. Multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for other cardiometabolic risk factors also showed significant positive correlation between dROMs and hs-CRP levels in both groups. CONCLUSION Subjects with metabolic syndrome may have a closer relationship between inflammation and oxidative stress than subjects without metabolic syndrome, possibly reflecting their increased predisposition to atherosclerosis. Further studies are necessary to confirm the observed relationship.

Abstract
AIM Considering the beneficial effects of physical activity on health and disease in older people, the aim of the present study was to investigate the changes in reactive oxygen metabolites and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity during an intervention period on increased physical activity among older people. METHODS Serum diacron reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), PON1 activity and cardiometabolic variables were measured in 43 asymptomatic Japanese volunteers (18 men/25 women, mean age 68.9 years) in the pre- and post-phase of a 6-month intervention program aiming at a mild but sustained increase in physical activity. RESULTS While the d-ROMs and PON1 activity levels were not significantly altered after the intervention, there was an inverse correlation between percentage changes of d-ROMs and PON1 activity during this intervention period. Multiple regression analysis revealed their significant and inverse correlation as independent of percentage changes of the other cardiometabolic variables (β=-0.3, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The inverse d-ROMs-PON1 relationship may indicate the value of concurrent measurement of these two components of oxidation-antioxidation balance when studying the effects of physical activity in an older population. Further studies are necessary to confirm the observed relationship.

Abstract
Background Small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL), which has a small LDL particle size with a greater susceptibility to oxidation, is considered a risk marker for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The diacron reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) have recently been introduced as a clinically useful oxidative stress-related marker. Physical activity can reduce the CVD risk. The present study investigated the correlation between the changes of the mean LDL particle size and the oxidative stress status, as assessed by the d-ROMs, in a physical activity intervention in hyperlipidemic subjects. Methods We performed a 6-month intervention study of 30 hyperlipidemic subjects (12 male/18 female, mean age 64 years), focusing on a moderate physical activity increase. The clinical data, including the atherosclerotic risk factors besides the mean LDL particle size measured with the gel electrophoresis and the d-ROMs, were evaluated pre- and post-intervention. Results The mean LDL particle size was significantly larger in the post-intervention than in the pre-intervention evaluation (26.9 ± 0.3 (SD) vs. 27.1 ± 0.4 nm, P < 0.01), while the d-ROMs levels were significantly reduced in the post-intervention period compared to those at pre-intervention (319 ± 77 vs. 290 ± 73 U. Carr., P < 0.05). A stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that there was an independent, significant and inverse correlation between the pre- and post-intervention changes of the d-ROMs and the mean LDL particle size (β = -0.55, P < 0.01). Conclusions The intervention study suggests that sdLDL and oxidative stress can concomitantly affect the risk of developing CVD and that both factors can improve by even a moderate increase in physical activity among hyperlipidemic subjects.

Abstract
AIM One of the methods to evaluate oxidative stress in clinical medical settings is the reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) test. While metabolic syndrome (MetS) is considered an oxidative condition, the oxidative status in MetS has not been fully examined using this test. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible association between oxidative stress as evaluated by the d-ROMs test and the MetS component number, in a Japanese female population. METHODS The serum oxidant capacity (measured by the d-ROMs test) was cross-sectionally determined in cardiovascular disease-free and non-smoking women who were not taking medications (n = 180; mean age, 60 ± 10 (standard deviation) years). Their MetS state was determined by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel recommendations with minor modifications for a Japanese population. RESULTS Patients with MetS (n = 60, 362 ± 53 CARR U) showed a significantly higher oxidant capacity by d-ROMs than those without MetS (n = 120, 324 ± 55 CARR U, P < 0.01). Moreover, the significant increase in the oxidant capacity by d-ROMs was closely associated with an increase in the MetS component number (trend P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS These results showed a significantly positive association between the oxidant capacity (by d-ROMs) and the MetS component number in this population. Further studies are required to establish the clinical applications of this test to MetS practice and clarify the biological mechanisms of the observed relationships.

Abstract
Background Inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with human health and the disease status. The present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal correlation between the diacron reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) level, as an oxidative stress-related marker, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), as an inflammatory marker, during a one-year period among asymptomatic subjects. Methods The data, including anthropometric and biochemical markers, were collected at baseline and after the one-year period from 71 participants (male/female = 41/30, mean age 50 years). The correlation between the changes of the d-ROMs and hsCRP levels during the study period was examined. Results A simple correlation analysis showed a significant and positive correlation to exist between the changes of the d-ROMs and hsCRP levels (r = 0.40, P < 0.01). This significant correlation remained independent in a multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for confounding factors. Conclusions The present findings suggest that the relationship between the d-ROMs and hsCRP levels could be prospectively followed, and that monitoring both markers may help to better understand the cooperation of inflammation and oxidative stress in association with health and disease.
