Decomposition of Luminescent Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds in Simulated Body Fluid

We present a luminescence study investigating the dissolution of rare-earth-doped hydroxyapatite scaffolds in simulated body fluid (SBF), aiming to assess the luminescence stability of Tb-, Ce-, and Eu-doped scaffolds over time. Our findings reveal a consistent decrease in luminescence emission intensity across all samples over a four-week period in which the scaffolds were immersed in the SBF. In addition, energy-dispersive spectroscopy confirms a decrease in rare-earth ion concentration in the scaffolds with respect to time, whereas fluorescence spectroscopy shows the presence of rare-earth ions in the SBF, indicating the partial dissolution of the scaffolds over time. The use of rare-earth ions as luminescence markers provides insights into the mechanisms of apatite formation in hydroxyapatites. Thus, these scaffolds may find wider use in regenerative medicine, particularly in targeted drug delivery systems, where their luminescent properties have the potential to noninvasively track drug release.

Enhancement of Cerium Sorption onto Urea-Functionalized Magnetite Chitosan Microparticles by Sorbent Sulfonation—Application to Ore Leachate

The recovery of strategic metals such as rare earth elements (REEs) requires the development of new sorbents with high sorption capacities and selectivity. The bi-functionality of sorbents showed a remarkable capacity for the enhancement of binding properties. This work compares the sorption properties of magnetic chitosan (MC, prepared by dispersion of hydrothermally precipitated magnetite microparticles (synthesized through Fe(II)/Fe(III) precursors) into chitosan solution and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde) with those of the urea derivative (MC-UR) and its sulfonated derivative (MC-UR/S) for cerium (as an example of REEs). The sorbents were characterized by FTIR, TGA, elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, TEM, VSM, and titration. In a second step, the effect of pH (optimum at pH 5), the uptake kinetics (fitted by the pseudo-first-order rate equation), the sorption isotherms (modeled by the Langmuir equation) are investigated. The successive modifications of magnetic chitosan increases the maximum sorption capacity from 0.28 to 0.845 and 1.25 mmol Ce g−1 (MC, MC-UR, and MC-UR/S, respectively). The bi-functionalization strongly increases the selectivity of the sorbent for Ce(III) through multi-component equimolar solutions (especially at pH 4). The functionalization notably increases the stability at recycling (for at least 5 cycles), using 0.2 M HCl for the complete desorption of cerium from the loaded sorbent. The bi-functionalized sorbent was successfully tested for the recovery of cerium from pre-treated acidic leachates, recovered from low-grade cerium-bearing Egyptian ore.

Encapsulation of Cerium Nitrate within Poly(urea-formaldehyde) Microcapsules for the Development of Self-Healing Epoxy-Based Coating

In order to study the release of cerium nitrate in a self-healing epoxy-based coating, poly (urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules containing cerium nitrate were synthesized. The effects of healing agent concentration and weight percent of microcapsules in the epoxy resin were studied through the incorporation of microcapsules within an epoxy-based coating. The prepared microcapsules were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and confirmed the successful encapsulation of cerium nitrate within PUF capsules. The self-healing performance of the prepared epoxy coating was investigated in 0.6 M NaCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The EIS results indicated the successful release of encapsulated cerium nitrate from PUF microcapsules once the damage occurred in the epoxy coating, which led to effective self-healing of the epoxy-based coating. The presence of chlorine and cerium ions in the solution led to the precipitation of cerium hydroxides and oxides in the scratched area as a passive layer which hindered the corrosion in the damaged area. In addition, the EIS results showed that the healing performance of the coatings depends on the weight percent of microcapsules and the concentration of the self-healing agent. The highest self-healing performance was achieved for the maximum amount of microcapsule incorporation (10 wt %), while the increase in the microcapsule percent led to a decrease in the adhesion of the coating to the substrate.

Raman spectroscopy of captopril crystals under low-temperature conditions

The polymorphism is a characteristic of several active principles, and can affect the bioavailability of a drug. Among the drugs used in the treatment of heart diseases, captopril is one of the most widely used in the world. Despite the knowledge of vibrational properties of captopril under high temperature and under high pressure, a lack of information impedes the understanding of the substance in the crystal form at low temperatures. In this research, we investigated the vibrational properties of captopril crystals under cryogenic conditions in the 300-8 K interval using Raman spectroscopy. By observing the behavior of the inter- and intra-molecular vibrations it was possible to infer that the captopril molecules suffered a rearranging into the unit cell due slight orientational changes mainly involving CH⋯O hydrogen bonds. The phenomenon occurs in a large temperature range. However, the observed changes do not suggest the occurrence of a structural phase transition and the Raman spectra indicate that the trans conformation is recorded down to the lowest temperature available in the experiments.

Explanation for the Multi-Component Scintillation of Cerium Fluoride Through the Equilibrium and Photophysical Investigation of Cerium(III)-Fluoro Complexes

CeF₃ displays favorable scintillation properties, which have been utilized for decades in various solid-state systems. Its emission undergoes multi-component decays, which were interpreted by lattice defects and so-called intrinsic features herein. This study of the complex equilibria in connection with photophysical behavior of the cerium(III)-fluoride system in solution gave us the possibility to reveal the individual contribution of the [Ce^IIIF_x(H₂O)_9−x]^3−x species to the photoluminescence. Spectrophotometry and spectrofluorometry (also in time-resolved mode) were used, and combined with sophisticated evaluation methods regarding both the complex equilibria and the kinetics of the photoinduced processes. The individual photophysical parameters of the [Ce^IIIF_x(H₂O)_9−x]^3−x complexes were determined. For the kinetic evaluation, three methods of various simplifications were applied and compared. The results indicated that the rates of some excited-state equilibrium processes were comparable to those of the emission decay steps. Our results also contribute to the explanation of the multi-component emission decays in the CeF₃-containing scintillators, due to the various coordination environments of Ce³⁺, which can be affected by the excitation leading to the dissociation of the metal-ligand bonds.
