PAHs and hopanes in the surface sediments of Qatar coast and their ecological risks: Comparison with regional and global coastal regions

The distribution, characteristics, sources and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hopanes in the surface sediments collected along the Qatar coast were investigated. Concentration of ∑14PAHs and hopanes ranged between 0.076 and 7.04 ng g-1 (mean: 2.60 ng g-1), 100 and 700 ng g-1 (mean: 205 ng g-1), respectively. Sediment samples were dominated by high molecular weight PAHs composition (4-6 rings). Diagnostic ratios of PAH concentrations showed both petrogenic and pyrogenic origins of PAHs, with a higher percentage of pyrogenic sources. The ecological risk levels of PAHs were estimated using sediment quality guidelines (SQG), mean probable effect level quotient values (PEL-Q), carcinogenic toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ), and risk quotient (RQ) evaluation methods. The calculated TEQ values (0.00012-0.85 ng g-1) were lesser than those in other locations around the globe, and were also within the safe level (600 ng g-1) suggested by the Canadian soil quality guidelines.

Contamination in mangrove ecosystems: A synthesis of literature reviews across multiple contaminant categories

Mangrove forests are exposed to diverse ocean-sourced and land-based contaminants, yet mangrove contamination research lags. We synthesize existing data and identify major gaps in research on five classes of mangrove contaminants: trace metals, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microplastics, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Research is concentrated in Asia, neglected in Africa and the Americas; higher concentrations are correlated with waste water treatment plants, industry, and urbanized landscapes. Trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, frequently at concentrations below regulatory thresholds, may bioconcentrate in fauna, whereas persistent organic pollutants were at levels potentially harmful to biota through short- or long-term exposure. Microplastics were at variable levels, yet lack regulatory and ecotoxicological thresholds. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products received minimal research despite biological activity at small concentrations. Given potential synergistic effects, multi-contaminant research, increased monitoring of multiple contaminant classes, and increased public outreach and involvement are needed.

Distribution, source, risk and phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in typical urban landscape waters recharged by reclaimed water

A park that had used reclaimed water as the sole water supply for fourteen years, was selected to analyze the distribution, sources and risks of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in waters and sediments. The effects of phytoremediation were investigated in waterbodies classified as phytoremediation, transitional and non-phytoremediation areas. Diagnostic ratio (DR) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to analyze the sources of PAHs, while risk quotient (RQ) was used as risk assessment tool. Results showed that ∑PAH concentrations in sediments ranged from 29.4 to 1245.6 ng‧g^-1, with average of 354.3 ng‧g^-1, corresponding to a moderate pollution level. The concentration of PAHs in water ranged from 10.6 to 326.3 ng‧L^-1, with average of 147.2 ng‧L^-1, corresponding to a low pollution level. The ∑PAHs in sediments showed a downward trend from northwest to southeast along with the water flow direction, with average values of 459.5, 362.9 and 246.1 ng‧L^-1 in the upstream, midstream and downstream, respectively. In contrast, PAH concentrations in water were consistent with recreational activities in the urban park area. There were 95% of water samples and 72% of sediment samples obtaining the Ant/(Ant + Phe) > 0.1 and Flu/(Flu + Pyr) > 0.5, indicating that coal combustion was the major source of PAHs in both the water and sediment. The RQ_∑PAH(NCs) values in water and sediment were all between 1 and 800, while RQ_∑PAH(MPCs) reached equal to 0, suggesting that ∑PAHs presented a low ecological risk. Acenaphthene accounted for 28.4% of RQ_(NCs), and became the most risk PAH in water column. Aquatic plants effectively removed high-ring PAHs from water and middle-ring PAHs from sediments, reducing the overall risks posed by PAHs.

An eco-sustainable approach towards heavy metals remediation by mangroves from the coastal environment: A critical review

Mangroves provide various ecosystem services, carbon sequestration, biodiversity depository, and livelihoods. They are most abundant in marine and coastal ecosystems and are threatened by toxic contaminants like heavy metals released from various anthropogenic activities. However, they have significant potential to survive in salt-driven environments and accumulate various pollutants. The adverse effects of heavy metals have been extensively studied and recognized as toxic to mangrove species. This study sheds light on the dynamics of heavy metal levels, their absorption, accumulation and transport in the soil environment in a mangrove ecosystem. The article also focuses on the potential of mangrove species to remove heavy metals from marine and coastal environments. This review concludes that mangroves are potential candidates to clean up contaminated water, soil, and sediments through their phytoremediation ability. The accumulation of toxic heavy metals by mangroves is mainly through roots with limited upward translocation. Therefore, promoting the maintenance of biodiversity and stability in the coastal environment is recommended as an environmentally friendly and potentially cost-effective approach.

Horizontal and vertical segregation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Egyptian Mediterranean coast

Egyptian Mediterranean coast receives significant amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from industrial exhausts, riverine inputs, maritime shipping and fishers, and oil and natural gas production and exploration. The present study considers the first exhaustive assessment for the dissolved PAHs along the Egyptian Mediterranean coast (Alexandria to Manzallah) to monitor their spatial distribution and investigate the effect of the marine currents and the role of microorganisms in their distribution. Surface water levels ranged between 124.97 and 301.02 ng L^-1 with an average 223.68 ± 41.11 ng L^-1. The distribution increases from west to east based on the water circulation in the Mediterranean Sea. The levels in near shore stations were lower than those of middle and onshore stations. The intensive existence of micro-organisms near shore stations consumes great part of PAHs, while this bio-remediation process decreases gradually away from the shoreline leaving relative high concentrations of dissolved PAHs in the middle and onshore stations. Middle and deep-water levels ranged between 312.75 and 1042.95 ng L^-1 with an average 633.47 ± 225.53 ng L^-1. Deeper waters showed higher PAHs concentrations where the average concentrations of 50 m stations (868.12 ± 138.35 ng L^-1) ˃ 30 m stations (629.49 ± 143.85 ng L^-1) ˃ 10 m stations (402.79 ± 59.46 ng L^-1). The wind-induced waves re-suspend rich PAHs sediment particles to increase its concentration in the water column. Carcinogenic toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ) for total detected PAHs in the middle and deep water represented more than double (75.46 ng TEQ L^-1) the value in the surface water (34.76 ng TEQ L^-1). The diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis indicated mainly pyrogenic origin in surface, middle, and deep waters.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove ecosystems: A review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants of increasing concern in the different fields of the environment and human health. There are 16 of them that are recognized as priority pollutants by the US environmental protection agency due to their mutagenic and carcinogenic potentials. Due to their hydrophobicity and stability, they are persistent in the environment and can be transported over long distances. Their toxicological effects on multiple species, including humans, as well as their bioaccumulation in the food web became major topics in organic pollutants research this last decade. In the environment, multiple studies have been conducted on their accumulation in the soil and their degradation processes resulting in numerous review papers. However, the dynamics of PAHs in mangrove ecosystems is not yet completely understood. In this review paper, an exhaustive presentation of what is known about PAHs and their transfer, accumulation, and degradation in mangrove ecosystems is offered. This article brings to light the knowledge already acquired on the subject and the perspective research necessary to fully comprehend PAHs dynamics in mangrove ecosystems.

Microbial diversity and ecological interactions of microorganisms in the mangrove ecosystem: Threats, vulnerability, and adaptations

Mangroves are among the world's most productive ecosystems and a part of the "blue carbon" sink. They act as a connection between the terrestrial and marine ecosystems, providing habitat to countless organisms. Among these, microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, archaea, fungi, phytoplankton, and protozoa) play a crucial role in this ecosystem. Microbial cycling of major nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur) helps maintain the high productivity of this ecosystem. However, mangrove ecosystems are being disturbed by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases within the atmosphere. Both the anthropogenic and natural factors contribute to the upsurge of greenhouse gas concentration, resulting in global warming. Changing climate due to global warming and the increasing rate of human interferences such as pollution and deforestation are significant concerns for the mangrove ecosystem. Mangroves are susceptible to such environmental perturbations. Global warming, human interventions, and its consequences are destroying the ecosystem, and the dreadful impacts are experienced worldwide. Therefore, the conservation of mangrove ecosystems is necessary for protecting them from the changing environment-a step toward preserving the globe for better living. This review highlights the importance of mangroves and their microbial components on a global scale and the degree of vulnerability of the ecosystems toward anthropic and climate change factors. The future scenario of the mangrove ecosystem and the resilience of plants and microbes have also been discussed.

Spatial and temporal variations of PAHs in surface sediments of estuarine and coast of CanGio wetland, Vietnam

Surface sediments from estuarine and coast of CanGio wetland (CGW) of Hochiminh City, Vietnam, were investigated to identify the spatial and temporal variations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAHs showed wide variation but similar to patterns observed (F = 0.901, p = 0.46) in LongTau (31 ± 77 ng/g dry weight, n = 13), SoaiRap (53 ± 81, n = 4), ThiVai (60 ± 62, n = 10) estuaries, and coastal areas (112 ± 211, n = 9). A decreasing trend in the wet season (F = 8.8, p = 0.01) reflected that inland sources such as wastewater discharged and atmospherically transported contaminants contributed to PAHs in sediments. The risk posed by the PAHs in the coastal and estuarine areas of CGW is still negligible. The present study provides baseline data, which can be used for regular monitoring and future strategy of environmental protection for the study area.

Dynamic Constitutive Model Analysis of High Parameter Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete

The traditional Holmquist-Johnson-Cook (HJC) constitutive model does not consider the effect of crack resistance, reinforcement and toughening effect of high parameter steel fiber on original concrete. The causes of the analysis effect of the high parameter reinforced concrete is not obvious. To address this problem, a dynamic constitutive model of high parameter steel fiber reinforced concrete is built in this paper. Based on the static constitutive model built by static force, a dynamic constitutive model is built based on the similarity between static and dynamic stress-strain curve. On this basis, the yield surface equation, state equation, and damage evolution equation of HJC constitutive model are constructed. An improved HJC constitutive model for high parameter steel fiber reinforced concrete is obtained by introducing the modification of the steel fiber reinforced, toughened, and strain rate effects into the HJC constitutive model. Dynamic analysis of high parameter steel fiber reinforced concrete is achieved by using the improved model. Experimental results show that the proposed model is effective in analyzing high parameter concrete and has strong applicability.
