Abstract
Metformin is the most common anti-diabetic drug and a promising therapy for disorders beyond diabetes, including Rett syndrome (RTT), a rare neurologic disease characterized by severe intellectual disability. A 10-day-long treatment rescued aberrant mitochondrial activity and restrained oxidative stress in a female RTT mouse model. However, this treatment regimen did not improve the phenotype of RTT mice. In the present study, we demonstrate that a 4-month-long treatment with metformin (150 mg/Kg/day, delivered in drinking bottles) provides a selective normalization of cognitive flexibility defects in RTT female mice at an advanced stage of disease, but it does not affect their impaired general health status and abnormal motor skills. The 4-month-long treatment also rescues the reduced activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex activities, the defective brain ATP production and levels as well as the increased production of reactive oxidizing species in the whole blood of RTT mice. A significant boost of PGC-1α-dependent pathways related to mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant defense occurs in the brain of RTT mice that received the metformin treatment. Further studies will have to verify whether these effects may underlie its long-lasting beneficial effects on brain energy metabolism.

Abstract
Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter secreted by cholinergic neurons, is involved in signal transduction related to memory and learning ability. Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a progressive and commonly diagnosed neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by memory and cognitive decline and behavioral disorders. The pathogenesis of AD is complex and remains unclear, being affected by various factors. The cholinergic hypothesis is the earliest theory about the pathogenesis of AD. Cholinergic atrophy and cognitive decline are accelerated in age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as AD. In addition, abnormal central cholinergic changes can also induce abnormal phosphorylation of ttau protein, nerve cell inflammation, cell apoptosis, and other pathological phenomena, but the exact mechanism of action is still unclear. Due to the complex and unclear pathogenesis, effective methods to prevent and treat AD are unavailable, and research to explore novel therapeutic drugs is various and active in the world. This review summaries the role of cholinergic signaling and the correlation between the cholinergic signaling pathway with other risk factors in AD and provides the latest research about the efficient therapeutic drugs and treatment of AD.

Abstract
Mung bean contains various neuroprotective polyphenols, so it might be a healthy food for Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevention. Totally, 19 major phenolic compounds were quantified in mung bean, including 10 phenolic acids and 9 flavonoids. After summarizing their contents and effective doses in rodent AD models, it was speculated that vitexin, isovitexin, sinapic acid, and ferulic acid might be the major bioactive compounds for mung bean-mediated neuroprotection. The mechanisms involved inhibition of β-amyloidogenesis, tau hyperphosphorylation, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation, and promotion of autophagy and acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity. Notably, the neuroprotective phenolic profile in mung bean changed after germination, with decreased vitexin and isovitexin, and increased rutin, isoquercitrin, isorhamnetin, and caffeic acid detected. However, only studies of individual phenolic compounds in mung bean are published at present. Hence, further studies are needed to elucidate the neuroprotective activities and mechanisms of extractions of mung bean seeds and sprouts, and the synergism between different phenolic compounds.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by amyloid plaques and tangles that have become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. Previous studies have found that thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP) expression was increased during the development of AD neurons. TXNIP separates from the TXNIP-thioredoxin complex, and the TXNIP-NLRP3 complex assembles ASC and pro-caspase-1 to form the NLRP3 inflammasome, which triggers AD inflammation and apoptosis. CB-dock was used to explore whether 21 natural flavonoids and phenols target TXNIP based on references. Docking results showed that rutin, puerarin, baicalin, luteolin and quercetin are the most potent TXNIP inhibitors, and among them, rutin as the most effective flavonoid. And rosmarinic acid is the most potent TXNIP inhibitor of phenols. These phytochemicals could be helpful to find the lead compounds in designing and developing novel agents for Alzheimer's disease.
